Towards design guidelines for virtual reality training for the chemical industry

    No full text
Operator training in the chemical industry is important because of the potentially hazardous nature of procedures and the way operators' mistakes can have serious consequences on process operation and safety. Currently, operator training is facing some challenges, such as high costs, safety limitations and time constraints. Also, there have been some indications of a lack of engagement of employees during mandatory training. Immersive technologies can provide solutions to these challenges. Specifically, virtual reality (VR) has the potential to improve the way chemical operators experience training sessions, increasing motivation, virtually exposing operators to unsafe situations, and reducing classroom training time. In this paper, we present research being conducted to develop a virtual reality training solution as part of the EU Horizon 2020 CHARMING Project, a project focusing on the education of current and future chemical industry stakeholders. This paper includes the design principles for a virtual reality training environment including the features that enhance the effectiveness of virtual reality training such as game-based learning elements, learning analytics, and assessment methods. This work can assist those interested in exploring the potential of virtual reality training environments in the chemical industry from a multidisciplinary perspective

    Acceptance of Unpackaged Food Products

    No full text
This article examines the willingness of consumers in Germany to purchase unpackaged food products. A two-step approach was used to determine and analyze factors potentially influencing the purchase intention: a focus group was asked about aspects and motives for purchasing intentions as a qualitative method. Starting with this research, hypotheses were derived based on the gained insights as well as the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Thus, an explanatory model was set up. To test our hypotheses, a data set of 1,894 persons was generated using an online survey. The study integrates various perspectives on unpackaged food from the consumers’ point of view, such as ethical and egoistic motives for buying in relation to attitude, subjective norm as well as limitations of personal and external resources and explains their effects on the intention to buy. Since consumer decisions play a key role in product success in the food industry, the results of the study support existing marketing strategies and allow new approaches to address potential customers within this special market

A multi-criteria decision framework for sustainable supplier selection and order allocation using multi-objective optimization and fuzzy approach

    No full text
With the growing social and environmental concerns, the integration of sustainability in supplier selection and order allocation is of paramount importance. This research presents a holistic multi-phase decision-support framework to solve the sustainable supplier selection and order allocation problem for the multi-echelon supply chain. The framework comprises a multi-objective mixed-integer nonlinear programming mathematical model augmented with fuzzy multi-criteria decision making techniques and forecast demand. The various economic, environmental and social objectives were optimized for a multi-modal transportation network of a multi-echelon supply chain. The results of the mathematical model highlighted the impact of multi-modal transportation on the total cost and total travel time. The results also demonstrated the relationship between the multi-modal transport network and the environmental impact of the supply chain. The proposed multi-phase holistic decision support framework can be used in the comprehensive sustainability-based analysis of supply chains

    Mikroorganismen im Dienste der Biogasproduktion

    No full text

Vision: information-centric dataflow: re-imagining reactive distributed computing

    No full text
This paper describes an Information-Centric Dataflow system that is based on name-based access to computation results, NDN PSync dataset synchronization for enabling consuming compute functions to learn about updates and for coordinating the set of compute functions in a distributed Dataflow pipeline. We describe how relevant Dataflow concepts can be mapped to ICN and how data-sharing, data availability and scalability can be improved compared to state-of-the-art systems. We also provide a specification of an application-independent namespace design and report on our experience with a first prototype implementation

Space- and time-resolved second harmonic spectroscopy of coupled plasmonic nanocavities

    No full text
Localized surface plasmon resonances of individual sub-wavelength cavities milled in metallic films can couple to each other to form a collective behavior. This coupling leads to a delocalization of the plasmon field at the film surface and drastically alters both the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the sample. In periodic arrays of nanocavities, the coupling results in the formation of propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), eigenmodes extending across the array. When artificially introducing dislocations, defects and imperfections, multiple scattering of these SPP modes can lead to hot-spot formation, intense and spatially confined fluctuations of the local plasmonic field within the array. Here, we study the underlying coupling effects by probing plasmonic modes in well-defined individual triangular dimer cavities and in arrays of triangular cavities with and without artificial defects. Nonlinear confocal spectro-microscopy is employed to map the second harmonic (SH) radiation from these systems. Pronounced spatial localization of the SPP field and significant enhancements of the SH intensity in certain, randomly distributed hot spots by more than an order of magnitude are observed from the triangular arrays as compared to a bare silver film by introducing a finite degree of disorder into the array structure. Hot-spot formation and the resulting enhancement of the nonlinear efficiency are correlated with an increase in the lifetime of the localized SPP modes. By using interferometric SH autocorrelation measurements, we reveal lifetimes of hot-spot resonances in disordered arrays that are much longer than the few-femtosecond lifetimes of the localized surface plasmon resonances of individual nanocavity dimers. This suggests that hot spot lifetime engineering provides a path for manipulating the linear and nonlinear optical properties of nanosystems by jointly exploiting coherent couplings and tailored disorder
