Video-Enhanced English Asynchronous Learning; Students' Voice
Various studies investigated the use of video material in the English classroom. Several studies also observed the effectiveness of asynchronous learning, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, there are limited studies discussing the utilization of video material in asynchronous learning. This is quantitative research designed as a survey to obtain students’ perception of the utilization of video material in English asynchronous learning. This research points out that the students have a positive response to the utilization of video material in English asynchronous learning. They are convinced that English asynchronous learning with video is fun, efficient, effective, enjoyable, and easier to learn. The result also shows that the utilization of video material in English asynchronous learning has several benefits: it increases students’ comprehension of the learning material, increases students’ learning motivation, and helps the students enhance their vocabulary. Eventually, the students believe that the material can be explained well via video
An Analaysis of Students' Anxiety in English Listening at Senior High School of West Sumatera
Abstract
This paper presents the results and analysis of an interview study conducted with English teachers and senior high school students. This research qualitative method and analyzed by narrative inquiry. Participants of this study were 7 students of senior high school of West Sumatera. The instruments used to collect the data by observation and interview, and the questions that used by the researcher to interview the participants are 6. The interview intends to get concrete information about the causes of students' anxiety in English listening, namely; (1) The lack of interest in learning English, (2) The lack of support for students from both inside and outside to learn English, and (3) The lack of students’ vocabulary. This findings have implications for students, so they are able to overcome their anxiety when listening to English, and for teachers can help and give more attention to them in overcoming their anxiety.
 
Online English Class in Pandemic Time: A Learning Challenge
Learning English before and after the Covid-19 pandemic shows a very different process. Face to face in schools in Indonesia has turned into a learning process entitled Learning From Home (LFH). Moreover, the Ministry of Education and Culture has issued Circular Letter Number 15 of 2020 which contains Guidelines for Learning from Home related to the intensity of increasing the number of residents who are indicated positive for Covid-19. This study aims to describe the challenges faced by teachers and students of grade 6 elementary schools in implementing online learning of English. The case study is applied in this study by direct observation of online learning that occurs in State Elementary Schools (SDN) in the Banyuwangi area; documentation of student learning materials, assignments, and projects; and interviews. The results of the study indicate that the challenges faced include the economics of students related to the difficulty of procuring mobile phones with certain specifications to support learning and the provision of quotas, networks, time, learning supplement materials, and the very diverse abilities of students
The Use of Genre Based Approach (GBA) to Improve Students’ Writing Descriptive Text
The study aimed to found whether there were significant differences between those who are taught by using Genre Based Approach (GBA) and the students who are taught by using conventional to improve the students' writing descriptive text of the tenth-grade students. Some problems that become a reason for the student's difficulty in writing are the students unknown the way to begin the writing, (1) they were not able to generate their ideas, (2)they can not make a sentence well, (3) they were sometimes confused to make writing in a paragraph well appropriate with the generic structures, (4) the student's motivation is low. This study used quantitative research which used experimental method and quasi-experimental design. The population is 159 students, where 68 students selected chose as samples by purposive sampling. To collect the data, the students write descriptive text, then analyzed by using independent t-test SPSS 20. Furthermore, the writer concluded that the Alternatif Hypothesis (Ha) of this study is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) of this study is rejected. It means that, no significant differences between students who are taught by using the Genre Based Approach (GBA) and those who are taught by using conventional to improve the students' writing descriptive text of the tenth-grade students
Students’ Speaking Problems In English Presentation
This research focused on students' speaking problems in English and the purpose of this research is to know problems happening in speaking especially when they are presented by the second semester of STKIP Nurul Huda Sukarja's English Education Program in their speaking presentations. This research used the descriptive method. The author uses observation, questionnaires, and interviews as a data collection tool. From the results of the questionnaire, psychological problems are most often problems experienced by the second semester English Education Program of STKIP Nurul Huda Sukarja with a mean of 72,73% who had a problem in vocabulary, 54,55% who have problems in grammar, 60,61% who had problems in pronunciation, 72,73% who fear of making mistake, and 57,58% who have problems in lack of confidence. In conclusion, linguistics and psychological problems are a problem that experienced by the second semester of the English Education Program of STKIP Nurul Huda Sukarj
The Students’ Difficulties in Listening for Daily Context Course on the Second Semester of English Education Program
The purpose of this research is to understand the problems that students encounter when listening to the daily situational topics. The writer chose STKIP Nurul Huda's second semester English Education Program, with 34 students in the second semester. Collect data through questionnaire surveys, interviews and observations. The questionnaire was conducted from three aspects: listening materials, listening factors and physical environment. The research results show that there are 30 problems in listening to daily situational topics. They have 7 problems in the listening material, 14 problems in the audience factor, and 9 problems in the physical environment
The Correlation Among LLS (Language Learning Strategies), Students' Reading Interest, and Students' Reading Comprehension
For Indonesian senior high school students, reading comprehension does not only extensively improve their knowledge in general but also their English achievement. The pieces of evidence show us that English assessments are mostly given in the form of reading text. Therefore, the ability to understand the information from the text is inevitability precious in our educational setting. the Indonesian students' reading comprehension achievement is still low because only 69% have the lowest level of reading. Students of SMA (Senior High School) still have the poor reading ability, it is shown by They can finish reading text but they can not answer some questions correctly based on the theme that they have already read. It means that they can not comprehend the text well. Based on the problems, the researcher wants to investigate the Correlation among LLS (Language Learning Strategies), Students' Reading, and Students' Reading Comprehension. Furthermore, the population of the research is the ninth students of SMPN 27 of Palembang consisting of 133 students, from the population, 60 students were represented as the sample which was taken through the probability sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data used questionnaires for LLS and Reading Interest therefore Reading Comprehension was taken by students' reading test. While analyzing the data, was used multiple correlation in SPSS 20 for Windows. The data analysis showed that the result of Ryx1x2 = 0.448 withR2 = 0.200 (or 20.0%) contributed of LLS and 80%. from linear regression analysis, it showed that regression between X1 and Y is FCount = 7.139 > Ftable(73) = 2.61, which means that linear and significant. Hopefully, it is suggested to provide with some useful lessons of LLS and reading interest that may help the readers improve the quality of their reading comprehensio
The Cultural Pluralism Reflected in Language Choice (A case study of Girl dormitory of Nurul Huda)
This study aims to find out the language choice that is used by students (santri) in the girl dormitory (asrama putri)Nurul Huda Sukaraja OKU Timur and factors that support using these languages. This study is an ethnography that belongs to qualitative research. In this study, the researcher has a role as an instrument to collect the data. The data are collected through observation and field notes toward utterances produced by students in their daily life communication. The result shows that there are some kinds of language used by students in the girl dormitory. They are standard Indonesian and nonstandard Indonesian language, Javanese kromo and Javanese ngoko and Komering. Each language has its situation to be used by all students. And most of the students use nonstandard Indonesian and Javanese ngoko in most of the daily life communication
Content Analysis of an ESP Textbook; English for Vocational High School
This research aimed at describing the result of English textbook analysis. The textbook is used as a medium for teaching English for Third-Grade students of Vocational Highschool in the second. This analysis verifies the appropriateness of the material that is contained in the book and used as a medium of teaching. The development of "Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP)” in the national standards of education consists of content standard (Standar Isi), process, standard of grades competence (Standar Kompetensi Lulusan), teachers standard, facilities, management, funds, and the educational evaluation. The two of education national standards, Content Standard (Standar Isi) and Standard of Grades Competence (Standar Kompetensi Lulusan) are used as the main reference in developing the curriculum (KTSP). Those two standards are implemented to achieve the goals of the learning
