Architectural risk of buildings and occupant safety: an assessment protocol

    No full text
Architectural risk of buildings relates to the possibility that technical and environmental elements of buildings interiors and outdoor spaces, may create dangerous situations for health and safety of occupants due to their engineering properties and their state of preservation, maintenance and use. Despite dangerous situations arising from architectural features of buildings are mentioned but undervalued in safety regulations, and a limited number of built environment aspects are currently analyzed in standard assessments of health and safety on work, many evidences demonstrate the strong relation between injuries or diseases of occupants and technical and environmental features of life and work environments. From this background, the study presents a Protocol for the Assessment of Architectural Risk (ARAP) for working environment proposed by Laboratory of Applied and Experimental Ergonomics of University of Naples Federico II (LEAS), with the Campania Chapter of INAIL, the Italian National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work. Main results of an application of the ARAP Protocol to an office building are also presented

Nullities and the effects of defective procedural acts in European law

    No full text
The paper examines the path along which the european systems have developed their own voidness regime of procedural acts: since the origin of the legislative primacy of nullity in France to the current features of the English or German system. The turning point seems to be the settling of principles that, nowadays more and more emerging on the law’s surface (e.g. in the new Bazilian Code), provide the judge with the main tool in order to shape a fair process much more than ensure the legitimacy of a single act. These principles play the key-role in applying the procedural law to the given case, making the judge as the king of the trial but also putting at risk the forseeability of the procedural law, whose rank is eventually lowered

L'amministrazione comunale come presidio di tutela della sua comunità.

    No full text

Predicting percent air voids content in compacted bituminous hot mixture specimens by varying the energy laboratory compaction and the bulk density assessment method

    No full text
The research focuses on the calibration of air voids content prediction models in compacted bituminous hot specimens of dense-graded friction courses when bulk density is estimated using a) the saturated surface dry method and b) sealed specimens method adding paraffin wax; in particular, it was performed one model for bituminous specimens prepared in laboratory under an Impact Marshall compaction and another one for specimens subjected to the Gyratory Compactor energy. Fifty-six specimens were prepared using two mix design solutions studied by adopting the Marshall method. Before moving on to the calibration phase, each subset was filtered by adopting two filtering criteria for removing anomalous values: 3σ method and the Chauvenet criterion. Last one criterion was the most restrictive; it works under the assumption of a normal distribution of the measurements that was confirmed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test application for each subset. Two effective explanatory variables were recognized in the best-final structure of the models: the percentage of bitumen by weight of the aggregates and a volumetric property of the specimens. The weight of the coefficients of the explanatory variables changes into two prediction models due to different system of inner stresses induced by the Gyratory compaction energy compared to the Marshall energy. Validation procedures by preparing fifty-two others specimens reflecting the same characteristics as those used during the first step were then carried out. Residuals analysis based on some statistical parameters assessment (i.e. mean absolute residual and mean squared residual) and diagrams (i.e. cumulated squared residuals and performance diagrams), and one way ANOVA, have performed to confirm the effectiveness and reliability of the results

Sequential Conditioning with Thiotepa in T Cell- Replete Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for the Treatment of Refractory Hematologic Malignancies: Comparison with Matched Related, Haplo-Mismatched, and Unrelated Donors

The results of conventional allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) in refractory hematologic malignancies are poor. Sequential strategies have shown promising results in refractory acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), but have not been validated in a haploidentical (Haplo) transplant setting. We have developed a new sequential approach combining chemotherapy with broad antitumor activity (thiotepa 10 mg/kg, etoposide 400 mg/m 2 , and cyclophosphamide 1600 mg/m 2 from day -15 to day -10), followed after 3 days of rest by a reduced-intensity conditioning regimen (fludarabine 150 mg/m 2 , i.v. busulfan 6.4 mg/kg, and thymoglobulin 5 mg/kg from day -6 to day -2). High-dose post-transplantation cyclophosphamide was added in cases with Haplo donors. Seventy-two patients (median age, 54 years) with a refractory hematologic malignancy (44 with acute myelogenous leukemia, 7 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 15 with myelodysplastic syndrome/myeloproliferative neoplasms, and 6 with lymphomas) were included in this retrospective multicenter study. Donors were Haplo (n = 27), matched related (MRD; n = 16), and unrelated (UD; n = 29). With a median follow-up of 21 months, the 2-year overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) were 54.7% and 49.3%, respectively, in recipients of Haplo transplants, 49.2% and 43.8%, respectively, in recipients of MRD transplants, and 37.9% and 28%, respectively, in recipients of UD transplants. Compared with UD, the outcomes were improved in Haplo in terms of the incidences of acute grade II-IV graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) (11.1% versus 41.4%; P <.001) and GVHD-free, relapse-free survival (44.4 versus 10.3%; P =.022). These results support the safety and efficacy of a thiotepa-based sequential approach in allogeneic SCT with a Haplo donor with post-transplantation immune modulation. Thus, in patients with refractory hematologic malignancies, there seems to be no benefit in searching for a UD when a Haplo donor is readily available
