Five feruloyl esterases (FAEs; EC 3.1.1.73), FaeA1, FaeA2, FaeB1, and FaeB2 from Myceliophthora thermophila C1 and MtFae1a from M. thermophila ATCC 42464, were tested for their ability to catalyze the transesterification of vinyl ferulate (VFA) with prenol in detergentless microemulsions. Reaction conditions were optimized investigating parameters such as the medium composition, the substrate concentration, the enzyme load, the pH, the temperature, and agitation. FaeB2 offered the highest transesterification yield (71.5 ± 0.2%) after 24 h of incubation at 30 °C using 60 mM VFA, 1 M prenol, and 0.02 mg FAE/mL in a mixture comprising of 53.4:43.4:3.2 v/v/v n-hexane:t-butanol:100 mM MOPS-NaOH, pH 6.0. At these conditions, the competitive side hydrolysis of VFA was 4.7-fold minimized. The ability of prenyl ferulate (PFA) and its corresponding ferulic acid (FA) to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals was significant and similar (IC50 423.39 μM for PFA, 329.9 μM for FA). PFA was not cytotoxic at 0.8-100 μM (IC50 220.23 μM) and reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human skin fibroblasts at concentrations ranging between 4 and 20 μM as determined with the dichloro-dihydro-fluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay

Aging resistance, mechanical properties and translucency of different yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics for monolithic dental crown applications

    No full text
Objectives: The dental market moves towards high-translucency monolithic zirconia dental crowns, which are usually placed either with - or without - a thin glaze layer. The microstructural features and the mechanical performances of these materials are still controversial, as well as their susceptibility to aging. This paper aims at studying these aspects in the current generation of zirconia dental crowns showing different degrees of translucency. Methods: Four different commercial zirconia materials were investigated, including one standard 'full-strength' 3Y-TZP and three grades with improved translucency. The microstructural features (phase composition and assemblage, grain size) were carefully studied, as well as mechanical properties (biaxial bending strength and indentation toughness), translucency and aging behavior (in autoclave at 134°C). Aging was conducted on crowns with and without glaze to better represent clinical uses. Results: Important differences are found in terms of microstructures among the materials in terms of cubic phase content and yttria in the tetragonal phase, leading to different optical, mechanical and aging resistance properties. We show that higher cubic phase content leads to better translucency and stability in water steam, but at the expense of strength and toughness. A compromise is always inevitable between translucency and aging resistance on one side and mechanical properties on the other side

A robust features-based person tracker for overhead views in industrial environment

A top view camera having wide range lens installed overhead of the objects contributes greatly toward resolving the tracking problem and also maintains comprehensive visual access of the environment. Video analytics becoming more important to Internet of Things applications including automatic people monitoring and surveillance systems. We followed an approach based on machine learning features-based person tracking algorithm in industrial environment. The algorithm implements simple motion detection framework through motion blobs. The algorithm, rHOG uses the history of already imaged/blobed population with the anticipated blob position of the person observed. We have compared our results, acquired through five varying test sequences, with established algorithms used for object tracking. The results highlight that our algorithm beats others tracking algorithms by greater margins. The accuracy depicted in our results shows 99% of accuracy compared to the last known best algorithm, the mean shift algorithm, yielding 48% accuracy in result. Furthermore, unlike other blob-based tracking algorithms, our algorithm has additional property to discriminate any blob as a person or no person. Our proposed tracking algorithm has the additional advantage of detecting stationary person for a long time, handling occlusion, abrupt change in the environment, and keeps performing the tracking by compensating for the gaps in data pertaining to all the frames

A validation of symmetric 2D + T model based on single-stepped planing hull towing tank tests

    No full text
In the current article, the hydrodynamic forces of single-stepped planing hulls were evaluated by an analytical method and compared against towing tank tests. Using the 2D + T theory, the pressure distribution over the wedge section entering the water and the normal forces acting on the 2D sections have been computed. By integrating the 2D sectional normal forces over the entire wetted length of the vessel, the lift force acting on it has been obtained. Using lift forces as well as the consequence pitch moment, the equilibrium condition for the single-stepped planing hull is found and then resistance, dynamic trim, and the wetted surface are computed. The obtained hydrodynamic results have been compared against the experimental data and it has been observed that the presented mathematical model has reasonable accuracy, in particular, up to Froude number 2.0. Furthermore, this mathematical model can be a useful and fast tool for the stepped hull designers in the early design stage in order to compare the different hull configurations. It should also be noted that the mathematical model has been developed in such a way that it has the potential to model the sweep-back step and transverse the vertical motions of single-stepped planing hulls in future studies

Combining ESPI with laser scanning for 3D characterization of racing tyres sections

    No full text
In this work is exploited the possibility to use two optical techniques and combining their measurements for the 3D characterization of different tyres with particular attention to the tyre's section. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) and Laser Scanner (LS) based on principle of triangulation have been employed for investigating and studying the tyre's section and 3D shape respectively. As case studies two different racing tyres, Michelin S9H and Pirelli Diablo respectively, have been considered. The investigation has been focused at the aim to evaluate and measure the section's components in order to add to the 3D model obtained by Laser Scanning accurate information about the different layers along through the tyres sections. It is important to note that the assessment about the different layers along the section is a very difficult task to obtain by visual inspection or classical microscopy and even with the LS. Here we demonstrate that the different layers can be easily highlighted and identified by mean of the ESPI

    Coalitional fairness with participation rates

    No full text
This paper investigates coalitional fairness in pure exchange economies with asymmetric information. We study allocations of resources which are immune from envy when comparisons take place between coalitions. The model allows negligible and non-negligible traders, partially informed about the true state of nature at the time of consumption, to exchange any number, possibly infinite, of commodities. Our analysis is based on the Aubin approach to coalitions and cooperation. Namely, on a notion of cooperation allowing traders to take part in one or more coalitions simultaneously, employing only shares of their endowments (participation rates). We introduce and study in detail the notion of coalition fairness with participation rates (or Aubin c-fairness) and show that flexibility in cooperation permits to recover the failure of fairness properties of equilibrium allocations. Our results provide applications to several market outcomes (ex-post core, fine core, ex-post competitive equilibria, rational expectations equilibria) and emphasize the consequences of the convexification effect due to participation rates for models with large traders and infinitely many commodities

A number of precise SAR instruments (e.g., [1]–[4]) have been developed by space and defense agencies around the world and are being used today for a wide range of applications in wide-area land (e.g., [5]–[8]) and sea monitoring (such as [9]–[11])

Spagna 1925-1975: modernità, tradizione e Mediterraneo

    No full text
