No evidence of increased cerebrovascular involvement in adult neurologically-asymptomatic β-Thalassaemia. A multicentre multimodal magnetic resonance study

    No full text
Multi-factorial causes jeopardize brain integrity in β-thalassaemia. Intracranial parenchymal and vascular changes have been reported among young β-thalassaemia patients but conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are contradictory making early MRI and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)/venography monitoring a matter of debate. This study prospectively investigated 75 neurologically asymptomatic β-thalassaemia patients (mean-age 35·2 ± 10·7 years; 52/75 transfusion-dependent; 41/75 splenectomised) using a 3T magnetic resonance scanner; clinical, laboratory and treatment data were also collected. White matter ischaemic-like abnormalities, intracranial artery stenoses, aneurysms and sinus venous thrombosis were compared between patients and 56 healthy controls (mean-age 33·9 ± 10·8 years). No patient or control showed silent territorial or lacunar strokes, intracranial artery stenoses or signs of sinus thrombosis. White matter lesions were found both in patients (35/75, 46·7%) and controls (28/56, 50·0%), without differences in terms of number (4·0 ± 10·6 vs. 4·6 ± 9·1, P = 0·63), size and Fazekas' Score. Intracranial aneurysms did not differ between patients and controls for incidence rate (7/75, 9·3% vs. 5/56, 8·9%), size and site. Vascular and parenchymal abnormality rate did not differ according to treatments or clinical phenotype. According to this study, asymptomatic β-thalassaemia patients treated according to current guidelines do not seem to carry an increased risk of brain and intracranial vascular changes, thus weakening recommendations for regular brain MRI monitoring

Explaining consumer purchase behavior for organic milk: Including trust and green self-identity within the theory of planned behavior

    No full text
The present study aimed to investigate, from a psychological perspective, the elements that are able to predict attitudes to, and purchases of, organic products. Our specific focus was organic milk due to the reputation established by this product over the years, especially thanks to sales by large retailers. The analysis was performed within the theoretical framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior, which was extended to include trust in supply chain actors and self-identity of the consumers in question as “green consumers”. A large sample of Italian consumers (n = 1509) was interviewed in two stages in order to obtain data regarding both intentions and actual behavior in respect of organic milk purchase. Our results suggest that TPB is, indeed, a predictive model for explaining organic milk purchase intentions and behavior. Furthermore, it can be successfully extended to elements such as self-identity and trust. Yet among all the dimensions of trust in the different actors of the supply chain, only trust in farmers was supported by our results. Therefore, campaigns aimed at fostering trust in farmers could reinforce the position of this food category when require

Adherence to treatment of hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and diabetes in an elderly population of a Spanish cohort

    No full text
Sub-optimal adherence to treatment in the general population has been highlighted in several studies, especially in the elderly and/or chronic patients. This study aims to describe the adherence to treatment of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidaemia and hypertension, and to identify the factors that influence adherence

Ovariectomy impairs socio-cognitive functions in dogs

    No full text
Recent studies have underlined the effect of ovariectomy on the spatial cognition of female dogs, with ovariectomized dogs showing a clear preference for an egocentric rather than an allocentric navigation strategy whereas intact females did not show preferences. Intact females had better performances than gonadectomized females in solving a learning task in a maze. Ovariectomy also affects socio-cognitive abilities, reducing the dog's level of attention on the owner. We tested dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) in the object choice task paradigm to assess whether an ovariectomy could impair females' ability to follow human signals. Forty pet dogs (18 intact females (IF) and 22 gonadectomized females (GF)) were tested in the object choice task paradigm using the human proximal pointing gesture. For the analysis, the frequency of correct, wrong and no-choices was collected; moreover, the latency of the correct choices was also considered. The IF group followed the pointing gestures more often than the GF group and with a lower latency, whereas a significantly higher no-choice frequency was recorded for the GF group. These results show a detrimental effect of ovariectomy on dogs' socio-cognitive skills related to the responsiveness to human pointing gestures

The subject of the present thesis is an examination of the current situation of German public libraries regarding a potential use as a third place. This is achieved by an introduction to the theory in its original form and with regard to the practicality in public libraries. Subsequently, several examples of libraries that function as a third place in one way or another are elaborated, followed by the presentation and analysis of a study conducted among 400 public, full-time managed libraries in Germany. Finally, potential problems of a commitment to being a third place, but also potential gains of this endeavour are discussed

ABBANDONO E RIUSO IN ARCHITETTURA. L'USO TRANSITORIO COME PRATICA DI CONSERVAZIONE IN ULSTER

In Northern Ireland and especially in Belfast recent legislation has not prevented a series of building losses. These were abandoned and demolished in the name of a development idea based on building substitution. Already in the 60s of the twentieth century the prospect of economic development accelerated a series of unscrupulous operations, with unregulated growth in suburban areas, the construction of infrastructures that did not take into due account the urban proportions and a rapid decline of central areas; in addition to this the “Troubles” gave the coup de grace to physiological evolution of the city. Several associations and trusts were born to raise awareness and promote campaigns to rescue buildings at risk of demolition as a reaction to what was happening in the areas with higher density of historical buildings. Indeed, until not long ago the fine for modifying or even demolishing a listed building without permission were anything but a deterrent for such offence, but the action of these associations in many cases managed to avoid further losses for historical heritage. In addition to listed buildings, since 1993 the Heritage at Risk project has been set up, with the aim of providing support and advice to building owners who want to undertake appropriate maintenance plan and to support potential buyers interested in restoring a building at risk. A register to this effect (Built Heritage at Risk Northern Ireland or BHARNI) is managed by the Historic Buildings Unit of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) The main objectives of the BHARNI project are to register architecturally and historically significant buildings at risk and act as a catalyst for conservation and reuse of built heritage. In this perspective, it is also accepted the practice of carrying out a work phase that allows "meanwhile uses" or even "pop-up uses" to ease a process of re-appropriation even of large buildings for communities. at the same time "meanwhile use" guarantee at least maintenance, pending investments that allow a definitive restoration and a sustainable use
