Do GANs Leave Artificial Fingerprints?
In the last few years, generative adversarial networks (GAN) have shown tremendous potential for a number of applications in computer vision and related fields. With the current pace of progress, it is a sure bet they will soon be able to generate high-quality images and videos, virtually indistinguishable from real ones. Unfortunately, realistic GAN-generated images pose serious threats to security, to begin with a possible flood of fake multimedia, and multimedia forensic countermeasures are in urgent need. In this work, we show that each GAN leaves its specific fingerprint in the images it generates, just like real-world cameras mark acquired images with traces of their photo-response non-uniformity pattern. Source identification experiments with several popular GANs show such fingerprints to represent a precious asset for forensic analyses
Multi-bit Decentralized Detection of a Weak Signal in Wireless Sensor Networks with a Rao test
We consider decentralized detection (DD) of an unknown signal corrupted by zero-mean unimodal noise via wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To cope with energy and/or bandwidth constraints, we assume that sensors adopt multilevel quantization. The data are then transmitted through binary symmetric channels to a fusion center (FC), where a Rao test is proposed as a simpler alternative to the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT). The asymptotic performance analysis of the multi-bit Rao test is provided and exploited to propose a (signal-independent) quantizer design. Numerical results show the effectiveness of Rao test in comparison to GLRT and the performance gain obtained by threshold optimization

The thyroid hormone activating enzyme, type 2 deiodinase, induces myogenic differentiation by regulating mitochondrial metabolism and reducing oxidative stress
Thyroid hormone (TH) is a key metabolic regulator that acts by coordinating short- and long-term energy needs. Accordingly, significant metabolic changes are observed depending on thyroid status. Although it is established that hyperthyroidism augments basal energy consumption, thus resulting in an enhanced metabolic state, the net effects on cellular respiration and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) remain unclear. To elucidate the effects of augmented TH signal in muscle cells, we generated a doxycycline-inducible cell line in which the expression of the TH-activating enzyme, type 2 deiodinase (D2), is reversibly turned on by the "Tet-ON" system. Interestingly, increased intracellular TH caused a net shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis and a consequent increase in the extracellular acidification rate. As a result, mitochondrial ROS production, and both the basal and doxorubicin-induced production of cellular ROS were reduced. Importantly, the expression of a set of antioxidant genes was up-regulated, and, among them, the mitochondrial scavenger Sod2 was specifically induced at transcriptional level by D2-mediated TH activation. Finally, we observed that attenuation of oxidative stress and increased levels of SOD2 are key elements of the differentiating cascade triggered by TH and D2, thereby establishing that D2 is essential in coordinating metabolic reprogramming of myocytes during myogenic differentiation. In conclusion, our findings indicate that TH plays a key role in oxidative stress dynamics by regulating ROS generation. Our novel finding that TH and its intracellular metabolism act as mitochondrial detoxifying agents sheds new light on metabolic processes relevant to muscle physiology
Real estate investment choices and decision support systems
The evaluation of real estate assets is currently one of the main focal points addressed by territorial marketing strategies, with the view of developing high-performing or competitive cities. Given the complexity of the driving forces that determine the behavior of actors in a real estate market, it is necessary to identify a priori the factors that determine the competitive capacity of a city, to attract investments. The decision support system allows taking into account the key factors that determine the “attractiveness” of real estate investments in competitive urban contexts. This study proposes an integrated complex evaluation model that is able to map out and encapsulate the multidimensional spectrum of factors that shape the attractiveness of alternative real estate options. The conceptual–methodological approach is illustrated by an application of the model to a real-world case study of investment choice in the residential sector of Naples

Fuoriuscendo da questa logica disgiuntiva, è possibile considerare l'immaginario come la sorgente della costruzione e della trasformazione della realtà sociale. Una serie di saggi - dedicati ai processi generativi degli ambienti socio-antropologici, alle dinamiche d'integrazione, di dominio e resistenza, al mutamento sociale, alle metamorfosi dei media, della politica, dell'economia e delle rappresentazioni dell'alterità, nonché al mondo degli oggetti - dà forma a un volume che, nato nell'ambito della neocostituita sezione "Immaginario" della Associazione Italiana di Sociologia, si propone di individuare nell'immaginario una possibile via d'accesso alla comprensione profonda della vita sociale
