    Calm-water performance of a boat with two swept steps at high-speeds: Laboratory measurements and mathematical modeling

    Laboratory measurements are performed to find the performance in calm water of a planing hull with two swept steps. Furthermore, a mathematical model, based on the 2D+T theory, is adapted to provide a fast and accurate simulation for performance prediction of this craft. The trim angle of the vessel is seen to reach to two peaks, one in pre-planing and on in the early planing speed, then converges to a small value around 2 degrees. A small wetted area is seen to appear near the chine of the middle body of the vessel at early planing speed. Laboratory measurements and mathematical computations are seen to be in good agreement, especially at very high-speeds. Overall, the mathematical model is found to be a useful tool for performance prediction of boats with swept steps, which can have different, but better performance in comparison with stepless and boats with transverse steps

    La “seconda modernità” del digitale

    As a consequence of several variables, we are today in the “second modernity” of digital era, to put it in the words of Ulrich Beck. The success of the World Wide Web has led to unpredictable consequences. The “enchantment” that protected the digital universe as a symbolic bell is, in some ways, in an ongoing process of dissolution. At the moment this process has had no impact on the collective imagery, but just on a restricted part of the world population. That is to say that critical media scholars, who want to reveal the material nature of digital. Today, the ethereal imagery typical of the “first modernity” of the digital universe seems to be questioned. But more generally, many of the mythical forces that had supported the success of the “digital revolution” are now being accepted with growing suspicion. Therefore, a brief reconstruction of the transition from the “enchanted” phase of digital as an immaterial universe, to the “disenchanted” phase of materiality is proposed. The aim of this article is therefore to discuss the genesis, the rise and the progressive decline of the imagery of the “first modernity” of digital and to synthetically analyze the features of what has been called the “second modernity” of digital

    Biochemical and histopathological impacts of rutile and anatase (TiO2 forms) in Mytilus galloprovincialis

    Titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles have been widely used in various industrial applications and consumer products. Due to their large production and use, they will eventually enter into aquatic environments. Once in the aquatic environment TiO2 particles may interact with the organisms and induce toxic effects. Since the most common crystallographic forms of TiO2 are rutile and anatase, the present study evaluated the effect of these two forms of TiO2 particles in Mytilus galloprovincialis. For this, mussels were exposed to different concentrations of rutile and anatase particles (0, 5, 50, 100 μg/L) for twenty-eight days. Ti concentrations, histopathological alterations and biochemical effects were evaluated. Similar Ti concentrations were found in mussels exposed to rutile and anatase, with the highest values in mussels exposed to the highest exposure concentration. Histopathological results demonstrated that both forms of TiO2 induced alterations on gills and digestive glands along the increasing exposure gradient. Biochemical markers showed that mussels exposed to rutile maintained their metabolic capacity (assessed by the activity of the Electron Transport System, ETS), while anatase increased the metabolism of mussels. Mussels exposed to rutile increased their detoxifying defences which, due to the low tested concentrations, were sufficient to avoid cellular damage. On the other hand, mussels exposed to anatase suffered cellular damages despite the increase of the antioxidant defences which may be related to the high ETS activity. Both rutile and anatase particles were toxic to M. galloprovincialis, being the highest oxidative stress exerted by the crystalline form anatase

    Frontal defect contribution to decreasing of body mass index in Parkinson's disease patients

    Objective: Weight loss is common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). It has been reported that low Body Mass Index (BMI) is associated with disease progression in these patients, but only a few data are available on the relationship between BMI and cognitive dysfunctions in PD patients. In the present study we systematically assessed the possible relationship between BMI index and specific cognitive defects. Method: We enrolled a prospective sample of 37 PD individuals and 30 healthy controls (HC) of similar age, sex, and education. The BMI was calculated in each participant, who underwent a neuropsychological assessment exploring the general cognitive skills, frontal/executive, visuo-spatial, visuo-constructional and memory abilities. Results: We showed that PD group had significant lower BMI value compared to HC group. In PD patients, the BMI was negatively correlated to disease duration and number of errors at the Stroop-Color Word Test, and positively to score on Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB). Moreover, a regression analysis revealed that, the BMI in PD patients was associated with disease duration and score on FAB. Conclusions: Our findings contribute to reveal that the relationship between height and weight is strongly related to frontal cognitive dysfunctions in PD patients

    Influence of Cold-Rolling on Incremental Sheet Forming of Polycarbonate

    Since product customization is becoming more and more popular, high process flexibility is required in many industrial sectors. Incremental sheet forming shows versatility and its effectiveness can be improved when coupled with other processes to, for example, change the behavior of the material to be processed. This study combines two technologies, i.e. cold-rolling and incremental sheet forming, for the manufacture of thermoplastic components. Polycarbonate sheets were firstly cold-rolled to reach the desired thickness and then formed incrementally, to study how the first process (which modifies the mechanical behavior of the sheets) influences the second one, e.g. in terms of formability limits and forming forces. To this end, an experimental campaign, covering tensile tests and the manufacture of fixed and variable slope angle frusta by single-point incremental forming, was carried out on parent and cold-rolled sheets. The tests point out the correlation between the tensile behavior and some of the main features of the incremental sheet-forming process, like the maximum formability angle, the forming forces, failures and defects. In conclusion, the study provides a critical interpretation of the results to weight up the pros and cons of this integrated polymer sheet forming process

    Il volume, a partire dalla tesi di fondo che Il concetto di Politico costituisce non solo il testo fondamentale dal punto di vista proprio della filosofia della politica di Carl Schmitt ma, altresì, il ritornante orizzonte teorico di riferimento per una produzione lunga almeno un cinquantennio, si propone di offrire al lettore originali chiavi interpretative sul discusso e controverso pensatore tedesco. Nell’individuare nel trofismo vita-storia-pensiero, nell’assumerlo quale vera e propria sonda investigativa per ricostruire, su tre livelli in simultanea, il contesto storico-speculativo, il contesto esistenziale e perciò teorico dello stesso Schmitt, nell’avvalersi dunque di un metodo di indagine, approfondimento e riflessione di filosofia e storia delle idee, lo scritto centra la sua attenzione sul transito dal dominio della politica al dominio del Politico, ovvero quell’inedita forma di conflittualità permanente tra unità politiche di cui proprio il filosofo-giurista di Plettenberg è stato straordinario artefice teorico

    OctoPartenopin: Identification and Preliminary Characterization of a Novel Antimicrobial Peptide from the Suckers of Octopus vulgaris

    Microorganism resistance to conventional antibiotics represents one of the major global health concerns. This paper focuses on a peptide (OctoPartenopin) extracted from suckers of Octopus vulgaris; bioassay-guided chromatographic fractionation was used to identify this sequence, which holds significant antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. OctoPartenopin is encrypted within the calponin sequence and was associated with the high levels of proteolytic activity already reported in octopus arm suckers. We synthesized the parent peptide and four analogues; all peptide were tested for their antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. Preliminary antibiofilm experiments showed that that one of the analogues had the best activity in both inhibition and eradication of biofilm of all three microorganisms tested. The occurrence of OctoPartenopin in arm suckers provided novel speculative information on animal behavior, as concerns maternal care of fertilized eggs. Our results highlight that suckers are a rich source of multifaceted peptides to develop alternative antimicrobial agents and food preservatives
