    L’Autrice lavora su un’intuizione di fondo: la tecnica affidata a se stessa non tende al bene comune, ma procura utilità solo a chi la impiega. Due le filosofie in campo con le loro luci e ombre. La prima lascia andare le cose per il loro verso, consegnando la tecnica alla self-regulation degli imprenditori digitali, che produrranno regole negoziali con effetti vincolanti anche verso i terzi. Siamo dinanzi alle Autorità private, che rafforzano una dominanza incontestabile e assoluta approfittando dell’aporia normativa. La seconda filosofia, invece, consegna la tecnica all’eteronomia la quale, se decisa nel confronto dialettico maggioranzaopposizione, potrebbe orientare il processo tecnologico verso i valori della persona. In tale ultimo caso il bene finale consisterebbe nell’attivare un circuito virtuoso tendente a moltiplicare le occasioni di crescita, di presenza e quindi di effettiva partecipazione politica del cittadino digitale al nuovo scenario di una Rete democratica. L’Autrice coglie la novità di Internet non solo nei modelli regolatori, ma in ogni categoria giuridica: dal modo di essere dei diritti all’identità del regolatore, inevitabilmente pubblico-privato. Cadono i vecchi archetipi e si dubita che sia necessario disegnarne di nuovi, che rischierebbero di soffocare una realtà giuridico-economica in divenire. Questa raccolta di saggi è anche rivolta alle studentesse/i, perché è un invito ad accogliere il diritto come un’occasione per capire la quotidianità, valutare le sue opzioni e quindi scegliere, fasi essenziali alla democrazia e alla crescita della persona, come la nostra Costituzione ininterrottamente ci chiede di far

    Influences of Age, Sex and Smoking Habit on Flavor Recognition in Healthy Population

    (1) Background: Flavor is one of the main factors influencing food preferences and dietary choices, and a reduction in flavor recognition has been associated with several diseases. A novel quantitative test to assess flavor has been recently developed and validated. The aim of the present work was to define the standard of flavor recognition in the general healthy population. (2) Methods: Three hundred and forty-eight healthy volunteers (18-80 years) performed the flavor test (FT). The test consisted of the oral administration of aqueous aromatic solutions, identifying 21 different compounds. Flavor score (FS) was calculated as the sum of the properly recognized flavors (range 0-21). (3) Results: Normal ranges for FT were produced. Flavor recognition was found to decrease with age. Females obtained slightly higher scores than males, mostly at older ages. Cigarette smoking seemed not to influence flavor recognition. (4) Conclusion: The normal values found for the flavor test in the healthy population will allow its usage as a diagnostic tool in several diseases

    Effect of Initial Aging and High-Fat/High-Fructose Diet on Mitochondrial Bioenergetics and Oxidative Status in Rat Brain

    Middle age is an early stage of the aging process, during which the consumption of diets rich in saturated fats and/or simple sugars might influence brain function, but only few data are available on this issue.We therefore investigated the impact of a diet rich in saturated fat and fructose (HFF) on mitochondrial physiology in hippocampus and frontal cortex of middle-aged rats (1 year old), by including a group of adult rats (90 days) as a Bnegative control,^ lacking the putative effect of aging.Middle-aged rats were fed HFF or control diet for 4 weeks. Mitochondrial function was analyzed by high-resolution respirometry and by assessing the amount of respiratory complexes. Markers of oxidative balance, as well as the protein content of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), were also assessed. A decrease in the activity of complex I was detected in both brain areas ofmiddle-aged rats. In hippocampus,mitochondrial respiratory capacity and complex IV content decreasedwith age and increased with HFF diet. Higher protein oxidative damage, decreased antioxidant defenses, and increased UCP2 and PGC-1α content were found in hippocampus of middle-aged rats. HFF feeding induced a significant reduction in the amount of UCP2, PGC-1α, and PPARα, together with higher protein oxidative damage, in both brain areas. Overall, our results point to middle age as a condition of early brain aging for mitochondrial function, with hippocampus being an area more susceptible to metabolic impairment than frontal cortex

    Measuring Care and Justice Moral Orientation: Italian Adaptation and Revision of the MMO-2 Scale.

    This study presents the Italian adaptation of the Measure of Moral Orientation, second revision (MMO-2). Based on Carol Gilligan’s theory of the Ethics of Care, the MMO-2 was designed to measure two complementary moral stances, namely, Care and Justice. For this study, questionnaire responses from 683 university students were assessed against an Italian-adapted MMO-2 scale. Data were analyzed through exploratory structural equation modeling first as separate scenarios and then as a single model. The final model comprises 4 intercorrelated pairs of latent variables and shows highly satisfactory goodness of fit indices with moderate construct validity and reliability. Strengths, limitations, and directions for the future developments of the MMO-2 are discussed

    Lipopolysaccharide structures of Gram-negative populations in the Gut Microbiota and effects on host interactions

    The human gastrointestinal tract harbors a heterogeneous and complex microbial community which plays a key role in human health. The gut microbiota controls the development of the immune system by setting systemic threshold for immune activation. Glycoconjugates, such as lipopolysaccharides, from gut bacteria have been shown to be able to elicit both systemic proinflammatory and immunomodulatory responses. This phenomenon is particularly intriguing considering that the immune system is charged with the task to distinguish the beneficial microbes from the pathogens, even if the commensal bacteria have molecular patterns resembling those of the pathogenic counterparts. Therefore, the importance of the chemical structure of these macromolecules in the fine tuning this delicate equilibrium is beyond question. This review offers an overview of the current understanding of chemical peculiarities of the lipopolysaccharides isolated from the gut microbiota, and their relationships to their biological activity in terms of immune system maturation and development

    Breve nota preliminare su un kouros dall'acropoli di Gela e sul suo contesto

    This paper is focused on a terracotta statue of a kouros found in a votive pit on the acropolis of Gelas during the excavations carried out by the University of Naples in 2000-2003. This statue represents an important element to define the ways Greek-Oriental artifacts spread throughout the Western Greek world, promoting the development of local workshops reproducing Ionian styles and iconographies. This characteristic is known as Western Ionism and is particularly evident in the case of the ancient terracotta figurines: a conspicuous amount was imported but many Ionian types were also reproduced by local artisans in Magna Graecia and Sicily
