Implementation and evaluation of a hand exoskeleton control for mobile devices
Anyone could suffer a stroke, which is one of the major causes of disability in the adult population. Survivors often experience problems due to paralysis and spasticity and thus require constant help, as even the simplest everyday tasks can pose an insurmountable challenge. To help those affected, the KONSENS research project led by the University Hospital in Tübingen developed a hand exoskeleton that can also be used by stroke patients.
The goal of this work is to implement a control for this exoskeleton on Google Glass, as well as Android smartphones and smartwatches. The resulting prototype was evaluated with students of Stuttgart Media University and acquaintance of the author. This work presents the interim status of the evaluation after twenty test persons. The focus is on comparing the user acceptance and suitability of different input and output methods such as voice control, eye tracking or touch input.
Furthermore, this work also summarizes current guidelines for the accessible implementation of augmented reality applications and compares them to a common catalog of criteria derived from them
Fuzzy logic–based clinical decision support system for the evaluation of renal function in post-Transplant Patients
In the context of the gradual development of artificial intelligence in health care, the clinical decision support systems (CDSS) play an increasing crucial role in improving the quality of the therapeutic and diagnostic efficiency in health care. The fuzzy logic (FL) provides an effective means for dealing with uncertainties in the health decision-making process; therefore, FL-based CDSS becomes a very powerful tool for data and knowledge management, being able to think like an expert clinician. This work proposes an FL-based CDSS for the evaluation of renal function in posttransplant patients

Impact of chronic kidney disease on platelet aggregation in patients with acute coronary syndrome
AIMS: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased thrombotic events and seems to influence platelet reactivity. Conflicting results have been published on platelet response in CKD patients with stable coronary artery disease. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of CKD on platelet aggregation in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients receiving dual antiplatelet therapy, included the more potent P2Y12 inhibitors. METHODS: We enrolled 206 patients with ACS, divided in two groups, according to the presence or the absence of moderate/severe CKD. Platelet aggregation was performed with light transmission aggregometry and results are expressed as percentage of maximum platelet aggregation. High residual platelet reactivity (HRPR) was defined as maximum platelet aggregation more than 59%. RESULTS: Patients with CKD [estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 ml/min/1.73 m, n = 28] were prevalent older, diabetic, had previous coronary revascularization. In these patients, platelet aggregation was significantly higher than in those with eGFR ≥ 60 ml/min/1.73 m (ADP 10 μmol/l: 28.46 ± 26.19 vs. 16.64 ± 12.79, P < 0.001; ADP 20 μmol/l: 30.07 ± 25.89 vs. 17.46 ± 12.82, P < 0.001). HRPR was observed in 4.4% of patients, with higher prevalence in those with eGFR less than 60 ml/min/1.73 m [21.4 vs. 1.7%, P < 0.001, odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] = 15.91 (3.71-68.17), P < 0.001]. At multivariate analysis, after correction for baseline confounders, eGFR [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 0.95 (0.91-0.98), P = 0.007], together with the use of clopidogrel [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 23.59 (4.01-138.82), P < 0.001], emerged as determinants of HRPR. CONCLUSION: In patients with ACS receiving dual antiplatelet therapy, CKD is associated with an increasing ADP-induced platelet aggregation and higher prevalence of HRPR, which is mainly correlated to clopidogrel use
Pasta consumption and connected dietary habits: Associations with glucose control, adiposity measures, and cardiovascular risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes—TOSCA.IT study
Background: Pasta is a refined carbohydrate with a low glycemic index. Whether pasta shares the metabolic advantages of other low glycemic index foods has not really been investigated. The aim of this study is to document, in people with type-2 diabetes, the consumption of pasta, the connected dietary habits, and the association with glucose control, measures of adiposity, and major cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: We studied 2562 participants. The dietary habits were assessed with the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) questionnaire. Sex-specific quartiles of pasta consumption were created in order to explore the study aims. Results: A higher pasta consumption was associated with a lower intake of proteins, total and saturated fat, cholesterol, added sugar, and fiber. Glucose control, body mass index, prevalence of obesity, and visceral obesity were not significantly different across the quartiles of pasta intake. No relation was found with LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, but there was an inverse relation with HDL-cholesterol. Systolic blood pressure increased with pasta consumption; but this relation was not confirmed after correction for confounders. Conclusions: In people with type-2 diabetes, the consumption of pasta, within the limits recommended for total carbohydrates intake, is not associated with worsening of glucose control, measures of adiposity, and major cardiovascular risk factors
Motivationswirkung spezifischer Gamification-Muster in Fitness-Apps
