Development of an on-line energy management strategy for hybrid electric vehicle

    No full text
The Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) seems to be one of the most promising short-term solution to improve the sustainability on the transportation sector. As well-known, the numerical analyses can give a substantial contribute during the preliminary vehicle design. In this context, the development of the Energy Management Strategy (EMS) represents the most challenging task. In this paper, an on-line local optimization EMS for a parallel/series hybrid vehicle is proposed to minimize the CO2 emissions. The proposed EMS, implemented in a dynamic simulation platform, is compared to the well-assessed off-line Pontryagin's Minimum Principle (PMP). Firstly, the main differences regarding the energy management are highlighted in detail. Then, the EMSs are assessed in terms of CO2 emissions, putting into evidence that the proposed on-line strategy involves limited penalizations (3-4%) compared to the PMP target

Rensch's and Bergmann's Rules in Cis-Andean South-American Howler Monkeys (Mammalia: Alouatta)

Howler monkeys (genus Alouatta) are large folivorous primates living in South America. We tested for the application of both Rensch's rule and Bergmann's rule to body size variation in Alouatta. We found that Rensch's rule does apply in howlers. In Alouatta, males exploit dominance rank competition, and take advantage from seasonal abundance of high nutritious fruit supply in their diet. This mating system and dietary charateristics suggest positive male selection for body size is responsible for Rensch's rule. However, since folivory favors large body size in primates (to lower mass specific metabolic rate) and it is the primary dietary habitus in howlers, larger species do occur in the Amazon basin, originating a reversed Bergmann's rule pattern for both males and females at the interspecific level. The spatial and phylogenetic components of such body size patterns of variation are both important, implying Alouatta ecomorphological differences to occur above the species level, justifying their non-overlapping geographic distribution

This master's thesis addresses the influence of haptic perception on presence in virtual reality. For this purpose, passive haptics were integrated into a prototypical VR game, whose development was based on a user-centered design approach. The aim was to identify if and which aspects of passive haptics in virtual reality contribute to increasing the player's presence. The review took place by an evaluation based on a mixed-methods approach. The analysis of various questionnaires as well as a semi-structured interview showed that passive haptics in the virtual reality under certain conditions causes a stronger sense of the player's presence

Rückblicke - Einblicke - Ausblicke : 75 Jahre bibliothekarische Ausbildung in Stuttgart

Historical Images and the Recovery of the Past. The Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database

    No full text
The Kingdom of Sicily Image Database uses new media technologies to reframe our understanding of Medieval Europe by focusing on the role of the built environment for the formation of state identity in the Medieval Kingdom of Sicily from the 11th through the 15th centuries, when it was ruled by Norman, Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese dynasties. This material is important for two reasons: South Italy was a prototype of multicultural state formation and monuments played a central role in the power structures of this new state. This historical patrimony, however, is fragmentary as the result of WWII bombardment, earthquakes, and urban transformation. A comprehensive database of historical images of monuments and cities (prints, drawings, maps, photographs) made by scholars, artists and travellers can enable scholars and the public to recover the appearance of the landscape, of cities, and of individual monuments prior to radical destruction or renovation. Our interdisciplinary research team is conducting a systematic survey and critical cataloguing of images dispersed in the archives, museums and libraries of Italy, Europe and US

INTER-FIRM NETWORKS IN NAPLES BEFORE AND AFTER ITALIAN POLITICAL UNIFICATION. A NETWORK ANALYSIS PERSPECTIVE

    No full text
The study of economic relations, cultural ties and social groups in different historical periods by means of Social Network Analysis has been considered to be a very fruitful approach for improving the understanding of the relational structure underlying markets and financial and commercial networks. Moving away from rich literature results centred on the description of financial and business structures, this study aims to analyse the business structure in Naples, the most important city in Southern Italy, using new original data derived from economic archival sources. These data concern all business units operating before and after the Italian political unification (1861). More specifically, this study uses statistical network measures to investigate the role of the financial sector and its intercon- nections with the local business network to determine if and how it played a central role and if and how it evolved when the arena of power and economic relationships expanded, as Italy became a nation-state

784-791 c.p.c
