    The relationship between additive manufacturing and circular economy: a sistematic review

    One of the important technologies in Industry 4.0 is Additive Manufacturing, which makes it possible to manufacture objects layer by layer continuously or incrementally. Circular economy aims to improve resource efficiency, leading to an evolution from the current linear model of extraction, transformation, and elimination to the model where resources flow in a circular manner. Many early studies have pointed to Additive Manufacturing as a technology that promises the environmental sustainability and the development of circular material flows. However, there is still great uncertainty about the relationship between circular economy goals and 3D printing goals. From this context, a Systematic Literature Review was performed by applying the Method Ordination multicriteria methodology in order to map the main publications. Then, 10 articles were analyzed to obtain relevant information about the relationship between Additive Manufacturing and Circular Economy

    Discrete simulation applied to queue management in a supermarket

    This research presents a case study related to the management of queues in a supermarket and the problems found in the organization of this process. In order to reduce the time that customers remain in the checkout lines, an analysis of the environment (supermarket) was carried out virtually through the discrete simulation technique, linked to the Arena software. This technique is classified as quantitative because it makes it possible to measure entities and predict the action of the environment in a way that mimics the reality of the queues at the site. Through the simulated scenario, it was possible to identify the flaws in the process and the cause of the queuing. Through the results of the simulation, it was observed that the average length of stay in the queue would be reduced by 88.23% if it contemplates the inclusion of 2 to 3 employees to perform the service. Note that the application of this technique is favorable for problem solving and decision-making, as it reduces the time that customers spend in the queue and optimizes the financial investments allocated in this area

    Limitations of the concept of permanent establishment and e-commerce

    The concept of permanent establishment introduced over a century ago became obsolete in the XXI age. It is completely irrelevant in terms of modern online business. Recent OECD initiatives are only a late reaction to the internationally observed legal loophole in taxing profits of e-commerce companies. Steps taken by the international community over the last few years reveal considerable diversity in approaches towards the concept of permanent establishment. Even the key principles to be followed in the development of the new concept of permanent establishment have not been agreed so far. The present article is an attempt to propose the major principles to be followed in updated interpretations of the concept of permanent establishment equally effective in terms of both big multinationals and SMEs

    Biologically structured materials

    Biomimetics, biomechanics, and tissue engineering are three multidisciplinary fields that have been contemplated in this research to attain the objective of improving prosthetic implants reliability. Since testing and mathematical methods are closely interlaced, a promising approach seemed to be the combination of in vitro and in vivo experiments with computer simulations (in silico). An innovative biomimetics and biomechanics approach, and a new synthetic structure providing a microenvironment, which is mechanically coherent and nutrient conducive for tissue osteoblast cell cultures used in regenerative medicine, are presented. The novel hybrid ceramic-polymeric nanocomposites are mutually investigated by finite element analysis (FEA) biomimetic modeling, anatomic reconstruction, quantitative-computed-tomography characterization, computer design of tissue scaffold. The starting base materials are a class of innovative highly bioactive hybrid ceramic-polymeric materials set-up by the proponent research group that will be used as a bioactive matrix for the preparation of in situ bio-mineralized techno- structured porous nanocomposites. This study treats biomimetics, biomechanics and tissue engineering as strongly correlated multidisciplinary fields combined to design bone tissue scaffolds. The growth, maintenance, and ossification of bone are fundamental and are regulated by the mechanical cues that are imposed by physical activities: this biomimetic/biomechanical approach will be pursued in designing the experimental procedures for in vitro scaffold mineralization and ossification. Bio-tissue mathematical modeling serves as a central repository to interface design, simulation, and tissue fabrication. Finite element computer analyses will be used to study the role of local tissue mechanics on endochondral ossification patterns, skeletal morphology and mandible thickness distributions using single and multi-phase continuum material representations of clinical cases of patients implanted with the traditional protocols. New protocols will be hypothesized for the use of the new biologically techno-structured hybrid materials

    Big data analytics: achievements, challenges, and research trends

    Big data applications combined with analytical tools foster prediction techniques that impact societal, economic, and political changes. After almost a decade of studies, this paper proposes to identify major debates on big data analytics, presenting its evolution over the past years and identifying its research tendencies. We limited our research to the top eight journals in information systems. Our findings suggest that big data analytics is apparently reaching a plateau, which might be confirmed by publications in the following years. The paper contributes to the current debate on big data by identifying ongoing studies in the research community. In addition, it provides a critical analysis of the field development, from its perceived benefits to its unimagined consequences. Finally, we conclude that other perspectives on big data analytics might include a new wave of studies and that new paths beyond productivity gains can be explored

    Factors affecting the intention to purchase townhouse

    The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the intention of buying a townhouse by customers in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City. To conduct the research, there is 192 validrespondents and the authors determine six factors affecting the intention of buying customers' houses in District 9 of Ho Chi Minh City: developer brand, price, location, housing characteristics, social influence and legal. The results of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) show that all of these six factors affect the intention to buy townhouses in the District 9 area of customers. The contribution of the study is that the authors confirm the theory of Ajzen and Fishbein (1975), Ajzen (1985), Ajzen (1991) and compare some empirical studies of Salah et al. (2015), Julius et al. (2016), Haddad et al. (2011), Nguyen (2013), Vo (2013), Vo (2016), Pham (2013). Also, from qualitative and research-related studies, the authors adjusted the scale and analyzed data in the current context. Based on that, research and propose solutions to improve the intention of buying houses in District 9 of customers and orienting for further research

    Challenges to use an interdisciplinary task in logistics and english teaching: an analysis of a performance test

    In language performance assessment it is assumed that the best way to assess one’s proficiency is to make her/him show such proficiency in a direct way in a situation close to the reality. Such view contrasts with knowledge testing which assesses language in an indirect way. This research objective is to discuss the development and application of an interdisciplinary task connecting two school subjects – English Language and Logistics – in a performance language test, investigating the correlation between these two subjects’ scores. This study uses qualitative method in order to build the test task and criteria and quantitative one to analyze the test scores. The research was developed in a public educational institution located in São Paulo metropolitan region and the results show that there is no correlation of the mean score between English language and Logistics subjects and students face more difficulties in using English than approaching the task topic content

    Potential benefit for production management of a pulp and paper company from using an ft-nir analyzer

    The pulp and paper segment has been seeking to increase mill efficiency through cost reduction and better production management. One of the ways to achieve this goal is through better control and operation of the pulp plant digester cooking. The study aimed to verify the accuracy of the FT-NIR analyzer in the liquor lines of a pulp and paper digester and its possible benefits for production management. The research methodology used was the case study, where it was analyzed and compared the results of the equipment with the values of the company's laboratory. The analysis of the instrument proved accurate and reliable, providing information on various properties of liquors that enable the optimization of production management with the stabilization of the operation. Future trends indicate that infrared technology will continue to play an important role as a detection platform due to its inherent flexibility and capability
