Utilizing AI-Generated Leveled Texts in EFL Literature Class
This study aims to explore the use of AI to adapt English literature for easier comprehension in EFL classes, addressing the challenge learners face with the complexity of literary texts. By utilizing AI-assisted learning tools, specifically automatic text generation capabilities of ChatGPT, complex literary works are paraphrased into simplified versions. This study tested the effectiveness of AI-generated leveled texts through a case study involving twelve high school students reading various levels (1, 2, 3) of the adapted novel Wonder over three weeks. Students engaged in pleasure reading and evaluated the texts on aspects such as flow, coherence, difficulty, and engagement. The experiments findings indicate that the level-adapted texts were highly beneficial, offering more advantages than drawbacks. Students reported increased immersion and enjoyment, and even attempted more challenging texts. The adaptations effectiveness varied by proficiency; upper-level learners used simplified texts as supplementary materials, middle-level students were more engaged, and lower-level students found even the simplest texts challenging. Overall, students reported increased self-efficacy and motivation, suggesting that AI-modified texts enhance reading speed and comprehension. Despite its benefits, limitations in AI-generated leveled texts were recognized, pointing to potential areas for further refinement. This approach offers a promising avenue for making English literature more accessible to EFL learners, expanding educational possibilities for those intimidated by original literary works.N
Educational Needs Analysis of Undergraduate Education Based on Core Competencies: A Case Study of S University
Analyzing the Factors Influencing Car Dependency Using the Theory of Planned Behavior
Critical Discourse Analysis of Physical Activity Promotion System (PAPS): Exploring Discourse Shifts and Implications
Skin preparation-free, stretchable microneedle adhesive patches for reliable electrophysiological sensing and exoskeleton robot control
High-fidelity and comfortable recording of electrophysiological (EP) signals with on-the-fly setup is essential for health care and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). Microneedle electrodes allow direct access to the epidermis and eliminate time-consuming skin preparation. However, existing microneedle electrodes lack elasticity and reliability required for robust skin interfacing, thereby making long-term, high-quality EP sensing challenging during body movement. Here, we introduce a stretchable microneedle adhesive patch (SNAP) providing excellent skin penetrability and a robust electromechanical skin interface for prolonged and reliable EP monitoring under varying skin conditions. Results demonstrate that the SNAP can substantially reduce skin contact impedance under skin contamination and enhance wearing comfort during motion, outperforming gel and flexible microneedle electrodes. Our wireless SNAP demonstration for exoskeleton robot control shows its potential for highly reliable HMIs, even under time-dynamic skin conditions. We envision that the SNAP will open new opportunities for wearable EP sensing and its real-world applications in HMIs.Y
10-GSymbols/s Supply Modulated 250-GHz SiGe HBT Transmitter RF Front-End with 6.8-dBm Peak Modulated Power
A 250-GHz SiGe HBT (fT and fmax of 300 GHz and 450 GHz) transmitter RF front-end using supply modulation at 10GSymbols/s along with a 16-customized-APSK (APSKc) constellation is used to generate instrumentation limited 40-Gbps signals with a peak modulated power of 6.8 dBm and an EVM of-18.9 dB, while consuming ∼1W of DC power. The peak modulated output power and efficiency for the average modulated power generation of the transmitter RF front-end is 3X and 2.3X higher than when conventional QAM modulation with a backoff is employed. The 6.8-dBm peak modulated power is the highest among the reported in literature.N
Archipelagic Politics: Hawaiian Sovereignty and Settler Narrative
This paper attempts to elucidate the historical trajectory of native sovereignty movements in Hawaiian archipelago and their socio-political struggle with Asian settler colonialism. Proponents of Hawaiian native sovereignty have continuously demanded the nation-to-nation negotiation and the recognition of the U. S. federal government, while Asian settlers as locals in Hawaii, now dominating the ethnic power structures of the State of Hawaii since 1959, strenuously insist on the priority of multiculturalism in the society of immigrants. Politically allied with Democratic Party, Asian settlers are not willing to recognize the rights of indigenous people and their self-determination, let alone forming a coalition with natives. Sovereignty activists argue that this liberal multi-cultural settler ideology effectively supports what they call the structure of settler colonialism which relies on the unjustifiable identification of natives and settlers. Aptly described in Gary Paks novels, Asian settler colonialism in Hawaii is a structural obstacle that hinders settlers coalition with natives by compelling them to forget the history of racial victimization of natives in Hawaiian archipelago. After briefly revisiting the controversial issues of native sovereignty and settler colonialism in Hawaii, I argue that archipelagic politics of coalition could really be dependent upon the settlers recognition, not concession, of the legitimacy of indigenous sovereignty as a realistic strategy for mutual benefit. To be an American should not be the unilateral goal of all ethnic groups in the territories of the States.N
Robust Image Denoising through Adversarial Frequency Mixup
Image denoising approaches based on deep neural networks often struggle with overfitting to specific noise distributions present in training data. This challenge persists in existing real-world denoising networks, which are trained using a limited spectrum of real noise distributions, and thus, show poor robustness to out-of-distribution real noise types. To alleviate this issue, we develop a novel training framework called Adversarial Frequency Mixup (AFM). AFM leverages mixup in the frequency domain to generate noisy images with distinctive and challenging noise characteristics, all the while preserving the properties of authentic real-world noise. Subsequently, incorporating these noisy images into the training pipeline enhances the denoising network's robustness to variations in noise distributions. Extensive experiments and analyses, conducted on a wide range of real noise benchmarks demonstrate that denoising networks trained with our proposed framework exhibit significant improvements in robustness to unseen noise distributions. Spillover Effects of Financial Reporting on Public Firms Corporate Investment: Evidence from Structural Estimation
I examine whether public firms financial reporting has spillover effects on the amount and efficiency of other public firms investment and quantify the relative importance of these indirect spillover effects vis-à-vis the direct effects due to firms own financial reporting. Using structural estimation, I examine the effect of financial reporting on aggregate output from the public corporate sectors investment and estimate that a significant portion—roughly half of the total effect of financial reporting and a quarter of the marginal effect of an incremental change in financial reporting precision—is due to spillover effects.N
Impact of conducting agents on sulfide and halide electrolytes in disordered rocksalt cathode-based all-solid-state batteries
All-solid-state battery (ASSB) systems have attracted significant attention due to their high energy density and safety compared with conventional batteries. Moreover, the application of Mn-based cation-disordered rock-salt (DRX) that possesses cost-effectiveness and high energy density on the ASSB system as a cathode is expected to be the superior next-generation battery system. However, DRX cathodes require high carbon contents due to their low electronic conductivity, leading to challenges in introducing them in ASSB systems, as the high carbon levels can cause electrolyte decomposition which potentially affects overall electrochemical performance. In this work, we applied Mn-based DRX cathodes to ASSB systems within a voltage range of 1.5-4.8 V and evaluated the suitability of cathode composites using halide and sulfide electrolytes as catholytes, respectively. The experimental results showed that the high carbon contents induced side reactions with the argyrodite, resulting in electrochemical degradation such as the drop of initial discharge voltage and the capacity fading. Meanwhile, cathode composites using a halide electrolyte exhibited relatively enhanced electrochemical performance due to its high oxidation stability regardless of the high amount of carbon contents. Consequently, the electrochemical reactions of the electrolyte, influenced by the content of conductive additives and the type of electrolyte, had a great impact on the performance of ASSB systems. This study provides a deep understanding of the interplaying among solid electrolytes, cathodes, and conductive additives and offers an important foundation for future research and development in ASSB systems.imageY
