    Lecturers’ Strategies in Teaching Toefl to Non-English Deparment Students at State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Curup

    AbstractThe objectives of this research are to find out the strategies, the reason the lecturers use the strategies, the way they implement the strategies and the problems they faced in implementing the strategies.  The data is collected though deep interview and observation.    The findings shows that the strategies used are: Teaching the usage not the rules, helping the students with the four skills, teaching the students the strategies in doing the TOEFL, using appropriate material, note taking, doing the preparation and using students’ psychic abilities.  The reason the English lecturers use the strategies are to build the students self confident, to train the students using the time effectively, to minimize tthe students weaknesses and strengthen their power in order to get good score, to make the students find their own strategies in doing the test as fast as they can, and to train the students do self correction by note taking. While the implementation of  strategies perform in variety ways.  Some problems are also found such as the students have low motivation on TOEFL, very limited background on TOEFL, rarely read English text outclass and the students have bad score in English Subject.Â

    Procedures for Developing Bilingual Children Storybook Based on Caring Character

    This study reveals the procedures for developing bilingual children storybook based on caring character for elementary school students. This is a research and development with descriptive qualitative as data analysis technique. The process of developing bilingual children storybook consists of five stages of development procedures, namely 1) preliminary studies including analysis of students’ needs, characteristics, potential, and problems, 2) planning including literature review and formulating learning objectives, 3) initial product development including determining themes, plot, illustrations, story elements, and expert validation, 4) preliminary field testing, and 5) product revision. The bilingual children storybook based on caring values has been validated by media, material, and pedagogical experts and declared appropriate for use. According to media experts and material experts, the product is categorized "good", while to pedagogical experts, it is categorized "very good". The book has been tested on the second graders of elementary school, and the students perceive it very well.Â

    The study aims to analyze and describe the translation strategies of culture-specific-words in the Indonesian tourism text Wisata Kuliner di Kota Batik into English Culinary Tour in the City of Batik. It used a descriptive-qualitative. The data were the specific-culture words, terms, or expressions in the text Wisata Kuliner di Kota Batik and its translation text Culinary Tour in the City of Batik. The data sources comprised the document and informants. The document was the tourism text of the GARUDA magazine, published by indomultimedia, Augustus 1st, 2010. The informants were the experts in translation linguistics. The data collection used a content analysis, in-depth interview, and questionnaires. The data validity employed a technique of data or source triangulation and peer debriefing. The data analysis applied an interactive model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion/verification. The results of the study showed that the translation strategies of the culture-specific words, terms, or expressions were as follows: 1) translation by cultural substitution, 2) translation by loanword with explanation, 3) translation by adoption with explanation, and 4) translation by loanword.Â

    Forms and Functions of Expressive Speech Act in Javanese

    AbstractThis research aims at investigating the forms and functions of expressive speech act in Javanese. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method so the researcher analyzes the data in this research through description. There are two main results of this research. Firstly, the forms of expressive speech act in Javanese involve literal direct speech acts, literal indirect speech acts, non-literal direct speech act, and non-literal indirect speech acts. Then, the functions of expressive speech act in Javanese involve congratulating, thanking, showing sympathy, asking for apologize, complimenting, criticizing, complaining, and blaming. Keywords: speech act, expressive, forms, function

    Challenges in Teaching Integrated-Listening Skill in the University

    This research describes challenges encountered by EFL instructor in teaching integrated-listening skill in the university. To deal with this issue, a qualitative approach notably a basic interpretive study was deployed as the research design. Conducted in a private university in Blitar, East Java, this study took 23 students enrolled in Advanced Listening course as the participants. The data were collected through observation, interview, and document analysis. The result revealed that EFL instructor experienced some challenges in teaching integrated-listening skill to university students. The challenges included difficulties in locating appropriate materials, the students’ low level of English proficiency, and the students’ problematic attitude. Those problems hindered the students’ ability in both speaking and writing activities as a follow-up to listening activity. Current gap in listening-related study is recognized, and suggestions for both practitioners and future researchers are proposed.Â

    In Search of Creative EFL Teachers: A Perspective of Best Classroom Practices

    Teaching is to create environment for students to learn. However, there are classrooms in which the students only sit and listen to the teacher. They are required to memorize words and grammar rules and the learners become reluctant and not motivated to learn. Therefore, creative teachers with certain qualities are needed to cope with this problem. This paper discusses a few important aspects of creative EFL teaching, delivers examples of classroom practices, and shares personal views related with the topic, notably the idea of creativity in ELT, in light of the author’s own teaching experience, research career and teacher training, as well as workshop-tours.     Using Text-Based Materials to Improve English Listening Skill of Elementary Students

    ABSTRACTThis research aimed to improve English listening skill through text-based materials at the grade V students of SD Muhammadiyah Kedungbanteng II. This was a classroom action research, which used the cycle model of Kemmis and McTaggart (2000), consisting of three steps, (1) plan, (2) act and observe, and (3) reflect. The research instruments were observation,  fieldnote,  interview, and listening tests. The reliability of the data was obtained by using the triangulation method. The data were analyzed by using an interactive model developed by Miles and Hubberman (1984). The results of the research showed that the English listening skill of students improved by using text-based materials. Based on the process,  the students’’  attention to the classroom activities improved and they enjoyed all classroom activities well. From the product of listening, the improvement can be seen from the result of students’’ listening test. The mean score of the pre-action test is 55.05, while the mean score of the post-action test is 76.1.  Keywords: text-based materials, listening skillÂ

    The Effects of Self-Efficacy on Motivation of Reading English Academic Text

    The motivation of reading the academic text, especially in the English language, has been a problem for students of higher education. Whereas, reading ability is one of the important factors of students’ successful learning. This research aims to analyze the role of student’s self-efficacy in the level of motivation to read the textbooks in the English Language. This research applied quantitative approach. The population of this research is the whole students majoring in Management, Faculty of Economics, Universitas Islam Indonesia, that take Basic Academic Reading course in the first semester. The research’s primary data was collected by closed questionnaire, and supported by structured interviews (by 90% response rate). Meanwhile, the sampling technique used is purposive random sampling, and data analysis method used is Pearson Product Moment’s correlative coefficient. The result of this research revealed that students’ Self-Efficacy (SE) has a significant positive influence on their Motivation in Interest Aspect (MI), Motivation in Dedication Aspect (MD), and Motivation in Self-confidence Aspect (MC)

    Blended Learning to Improve the Students’ Vocabulary Mastery for Mechanical Engineering Purposes At STT Adisutjipto Yogyakarta

    The study was conducted to improve the low vocabulary mastery of technical terms appeared in English for mechanical engineering purposes at STT Adisutjipto. The students are required to master the technical terms of the three offered concentrations; energy conversion, aircraft maintenance, and manufacture. A blended learning was chosen to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery through an action research study. It was divided into two cycles and the data were collected through the journal log, observation sheet, questionnaire, test, and interview. The result indicated that the students enjoyed and improved their vocabulary mastery. The blended learning was seen effectively improving the vocabulary mastery

    Language Learning Strategies Used by Awardees of Affirmation Scholarship in IELTS Preparation Class

    The aim of this study is to find out the type of language learning strategies (LLSs) used by two groups of awardees for Affirmation Scholarship of Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) in IELTS preparation classes. Those group were preparing for the IELTS examination as the minimum requirement score for university entrance. The study attempts to investigate the particular pattern of LLS used by students with different gender, academic majors, and IELTS band score. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990) was used as an instrument to collect data from the two groups of IELTS preparation class. The results revealed that respondents tend to use meta-cognitive strategies as their main LLS with females being the more active users than males, while language major students used strategies more often than those who study in science and social studies. Participants who had good score in IELTS employed social strategies, besides affective strategies used by students who were less proficient in English. The findings have implications for students and teachers of IELTS class to utilize appropriate LLS in language learning.Â
