    Functional English Design for Domestic Migrant Workers

    This paper aimed at: (1) describing the content of Functional English Design (FED) materials and (2) describing the appropriateness of the FEDas the English training materials for the migrant workers' candidates (MWC). This study used ADDIE (Analysing, Designing, Developing, Implementing and Evaluating) model involving totally 200 MWC in the 4 PPTKIS (namely authorized private boards in which duties serves the Indonesian workers' placement and protection abroad).The data were taken from the documentation, the trainees’ English training achievements using the FED and peer-debriefing. The gathered data was analyzed using: Content Analysis and Mean-difference computation of the trainees' test results descriptively. This study found: (1) the content of the FEDthat developed“Imparting and seeking factual information†with “Minimum–adequate language Functions†was matched with the trainees needs and (2) the FED was appropriate to use as an alternative English materials since it was designed based on the result of needs analysis beside the test result in significant improvement i.e. the Mean Difference of the oral pre and post-test was 2.25 within the scoring standard scale of 0-10, while the Md of the written pre-post-test was 13.35 within the scoring standard scale of 0-100. Besides, the peers debriefing stated that the FED was recommended for use in the 4 investigated PPTKIS

    Qualifying Teachers’ of English for Specific Purposes to Meet the Global Challenges

    As institutions of higher education prepare graduates to strive for the more competitive job market, teachers of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) play a pivotal role to nurture and facilitate students’ English competence for career advancement. It is commonly hypothesized that ESP teachers require more than that of general English instructors are capable of in language teaching-related pedagogy. However, limited numbers of such studies have been conducted in Indonesia as a potentially developing country in the world. This quantitative study aims to portray ESP teachers' perceived qualifications, benefits of the program instruction, and its relevance to meet the challenges of the globalization. Initial findings of this study reveal that almost all of the respondents acknowledged the necessity of ESP teachers to demonstrate capacity in educational principle, language learning theory, Linguistics competence, material and media design, classroom management, intercultural understanding, language assessment, and classroom-based research inquiry. It is perceived that successful ESP teaching is significantly required for graduates to excel the job market, increase professionalism at work, and facilitate the nation competitive edge. Furthermore, ESP programs are considered relevant to meet the present and future challenges of globalization. More elaborative findings will be obtained, specifically addressing difference-variance of perceptions according to respondents’ education background and teaching experience

    Considering Students’ Reading Interest in Text-Selection to Foster Literacy in the English Classroom

    This work is a review paper. This conceptual writing focuses on how students’ reading interest is essential for reading instruction. This argument is derived from some experts who suggest the teachers carry literacy in the classroom. It means that teachers should take students’ interest into account. There are some benefits of considering students’ interest in reading classrooms. In addition, some factors can influence reading activities in the classroom. One of those is the text. Texts serve as the input for the students in reading activities. However, not all texts are appropriate for the students. Therefore, this conceptual study presents some considerations in choosing the texts and ways to take students’ interest into account in reading activities. The considerations in choosing the text are taken and analyzed from some experts who are concern with this topic. Along the way, teachers can finally consider the students’ reading interest by understanding the ways how to consider the students’ interest in selecting the texts that will be used in the English reading classroom proposed by experts

    The Responses of Non-English Major Students with Visual Learning Style of Writing Towards Oral English Test

    This research is conducted towards the students of non-English major with visual learning style and writing preference. There are 14 students, which are taken to be the respondents. Questionnaires are the instrument used to gather the data in this research. This research employs descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data.            The result portrays that 3 major findings: (1) most of the students find it difficult to accomplish the oral English test which is natural and normal due to their preference skill in writing, (2) in spite of the difficulty of the oral English test, the majority of the students consider the test to be challenging, accommodating and satisfying (3) a large number of the students get the benefit from the effectiveness of the feedback that they get in the form of rubrics

    Incorporating ‘Ahmad Dahlan Values’ in the Curriculum of Higher Education

    In 2012 the Directorate General of Higher Education of Indonesia required all higher education institutions to implement the Curriculum of Higher Education. As a part of higher education institutions, English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has been implementing this curriculum for five years.  Curriculum of Higher Education has shifted the old paradigm of teacher-centered learning to the new pedagogical approach called student-centered learning. The implementation of the Curriculum of Higher Education necessitates all study programs to alter their curriculum oriented to produce competent graduates. English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has also been making attempts to incorporate the Muhammadiyah values proposed by its founder, KH. Ahmad Dahlan. The research is aimed at exploring how the Ahmad Dahlan’s’ values are implemented in the CHE setting at the EED of UMY. The data were collected by means of interviews with a head of department and two lecturers, teaching observation, and document analysis and focus group discussion with 33 students.  The research found that the principles proposed by Ahmad Dahlan including the curriculum structure, pedagogical techniques, and character education had been successfully incorporated in the implementation of CHE and the Ahmad’s Dahlan values’ correspond to the CHE principles

    Lesson Study: What Do Pre-Service Teachers Tell?

    Education topics and talks on pre-service teacher training program and Lesson Study have individually been discussed and appeared in many journals among disciplines. However, the empirical studies on the issue about the connection between them and how they can relate and benefit one another are limited and rarely done. This study aims at investigating pre-service English teachers’ perspectives towards Lesson Study, particularly in terms of their knowledge, experience, and plan for it. This study involved seventeen pre-service teachers (PST) in a teacher education faculty in Indonesia who participated as the research subject. Empirical data were collected through interview and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data analysis used a descriptive qualitative method. Results of the study showed that: (1) In terms of knowledge about Lesson Study, all PSTs have good knowledge about Lesson Study. In addition, they also show positive response towards Lesson Study, (2) In terms of experience with Lesson Study, most of the PSTs have had experiences with Lesson Study activities. The experiences mostly occurred when they were being directly involved in Lesson Study activities as students, (3) In terms of the plan to do Lesson Study, the majority of the PSTs are planning to take and do Lesson Study in the future, especially when they become real teachers at schools.Â

    The Use of Animated Film to Improve the Second Grade Students’ Writing Skill

    ABSTRACTThe article reveals (1) the description of the implementation of learning writing through the animated film; (2) the description of the second grade of science class students’ responses in learning writing through the animated film; and, (3) the improvement of the students’ writing skills in writing narrative text. The type of this research was classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second grade of science class students. The setting of this research was in one of public schools in Bantul, Yogyakarta. This research was carried out in two cycles which consist of four steps: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Each cycle consists of 3 meetings. Moreover, the data collecting technique of this research used qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data collecting techniques were observation checklists, interview guidance, and documentation; while, the quantitative data collecting technique was a writing test. Besides, the data analyzing technique of this research was the descriptive statistic and descriptive analysis. The descriptive statistic was used to analyse the quantitative data; while, the descriptive analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. The results of this study revealed that the implementation of learning writing through the animated film was based on the lesson plan which consists of two cycles in which both the animated film and the writing practice was used and conducted. Moreover, the use of the animated film could also improve the students’ responses such as the students were not sleepy when teaching and learning through the animated film was conducted, the students paid attention to the animated film, the students answered the researcher’s question and the students could focus on writing. Furthermore, the use of the animated film could also improve the students’ mean score which was seen from preliminary research (66.5), post 1 (78.3), and post test 2 (83.0).Keywords: Writing, Senior High School Students, Animated film, Action research

    Adjacency Pairs in Drama Script “Teen Angel†by D.M Larson

    Taking part as one of the important roles in globalization era, comprehending English should be done in order to conquer some aspects affected by it such as economy, social and politic. As the bridge of communication between two people, conversation becomes one of the parts of language that is analysed by language practitioner. In this research, the researcher did Conversation Analysis (CA) and use the the result of Conversation Analysis to be used as the materials in speaking and writing class. The data was taken from the drama script entitled “Teen Angel†by D.M Larson. The two research questions; (1) What are the types of adjacency pairs formed in the conversations between characters involved in this drama? The result of the analysis shows that there are, 245 turns, 103 data (turn-taking) of adjacency pair classified into 13 types of adjacency pairs, and 5 pre-sequence and 2 insertion sequences occurred.Â

    A Brief Comparative Study on Tragedy in Desire Under the Elms and in the Javanese Chronicle Account of Rara Oyi

    ABSTRACTThis paper is aimed at analyzing tragedy in a play entitled Desire Under the Elms portraying the primitive desires that influence several characters of the afore-mentioned play in the 1920s New England, and also that in a Javanese chronicle account of Rara Oyi that happened during the reign of Sunan Amangkurat I from 1646 to 1677 in the kingdom of Islamic Mataram.   Tragedy discussed in this paper is an occurrence that involves people of high status or people of high nobility, as well as ordinary people, who suffer and whose lives lead to their downfall partly because of the trouble they are unable to get rid of. The play Desire Under the Elms portrays tragedy that takes place among ordinary people, while the Javanese Chronicle story of Rara Oyi depicts tragedy of Rara Oyi, an ordinary but beautiful young lady vied by two noblemen, the king Sunan Amangkurat I of the kingdom of Islamic Mataram and his own crown prince, Pangeran Adipati Anom alias Prince Tejaningrat.   The analysis focuses on comparing the tragedy that befall either the protagonists or the antagonists in both the play and the chronicle account mentioned above. It turns out that their lives are in ruins due to their fate as they are not able to realize their dream of living with the lady they are madly in love with and wish to marry

    A Discourse Analysis of American Folktale “the Monkey’s Pawâ€

    Discourse analysis studies language in use taking into account important elements such as coherence (unity of the text) and cohesion (tools that tie together sentences, e.g. pronouns). American folktale “the monkey’s paw†is written by W.W. Jacobs. "The Monkey’s Paw". It is clearly illustrates the old adage, "Be careful what you wish." It presents the usual Mr. White with magical items and allows his characters (curiosity, the desire to be free of debt) to destroy him. The monkey’s paw permits his wishes, but never the way he imagined. In his time, Jacobs was primarily known as a novelist of some funny novel. Sense of humour disclosure "The Monkey’s Paw," which is the use of what is now called black humour. The data sources of this paper were the written materials. Written materials mean that the data of this paper taken from a folktale written in English. The items were analyzed namely: (1) cohesion and deixis; (2) cohesive devices; (3) substitution; (4) ellipsis; (5) conjunction, and (6) lexical ties
