Error Analysis in Using Simple Past Tense Found in Students’ Writing of Recount Text
This research was to find out the types of error analysis and the most dominant type of error analysis found in Students’ Writing Composition in simple past tense especially in Recount Text. This study used a mixed-method, both qualitative and quantitative approach. From the analysis, the students’ error in writing composition of simple past tense consists of some aspects of writing, they were in grammar, punctuation and spelling. In grammar, there were 57 data or 53.37 %, which consist of errors in class words like in determiner/article (25 data or 43.86 %), in verb (14 data or 24.56 %), in preposition (11 data or 19.30 %) and the last in noun (7 data or 12.28 %). While, the most dominant error was in the determiner/article. Second, in the aspect of spelling, there were 26 data or 21.70 %). Third, in the aspect of punctuation, there were (23 data or 24.53 %). Based on the frequency of each aspect of error, the most dominant error found in students’ writing composition was in the aspect of grammar as 57 data or 53.37 %
Good Teacher, Qualified Teacher, and Professional Teacher: Facing the 21st Century Global Changes
The role of teacher cannot be separated in teaching and learning process. In fact, teacher hold an important role to improve the quality of education especially for facing 21st century global change. In this globalization era, it drives to the increasing need of knowledge and communication to survive. It forces the teacher to take the responsibility to fulfill what the students need since the teachers meet directly to the student to meet the 21st century skills. Thus, teacher quality may strongly influence and affect the educational quality. Discussing about teacher quality, some terms will come out; good teacher, qualified teacher, and professional teacher. In developing country, those kinds of teachers are very needed to improve the quality of education. In fact, it is very rare that a teacher has three of them. Despite of that, it becomes a confusion regarding to those terms. Are they different? And how can they different? In this article, it will be discussed about the differences of good teacher, qualified teacher, and professional teacher. After defining the differences of them, we can see which one is the appropriate to be improved for developing country where in this research is for Indonesia case. In conclusion, referring to some matters in Indonesia, professional teacher should be concerned by the government to achieve the good quality in education
Emotional Abuse Issue in Emma Donoghue’s Room
Room is a best-seller novel written by Emma Donoghue. It tells about a mother and her son who struggle to be free from a very wicked man, Old Nick. This novel shows violence toward a woman. This paper aims to investigate emotional abuse in Emma Donoghue's Room. This research is categorized in library research, and the data are gathered mainly from the primary source, Room. The secondary sources are from journals especially discussing domestic violence and abuse toward women. Other than that, research method books are also used to support this research. The data are found through note-taking. After that, those are classified and analyzed. The finding shows that Ma's emotional abuse is in isolation and ignorance, leading her to depression and anxiety. Old Nick isolates Ma in a tiny room, and after Ma is free from Old Nick, she is ignored by some of her family. Those experiences mainly cause ma’s depression and anxiety
The Application of Modified Gasing Game to Improve the Elementary School Students’ Vocabulary in Singkawang Tourism Site, West Kalimantan
This Classroom Action Research was aimed at knowing whether the implementation of modified gasing game was effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery. The population in this study was the students of Muhammadiyah 2 Singkawang Elementary School with a total sample of 25 students by using a random sampling technique. The Classroom Action Research objectives were to describe the use of a modified-gasing game on vocabulary, to investigate the Muhammadiyah 2 Singkawang Elementary School fourth grade students’ vocabulary mastery and to identify the improvement of the Elementary School fourth grade students’ vocabulary mastery using a modified-gasing game. It employed three cycles with four stages (planning, action, observation, and reflection). In each cycle, the data were analyzed to find out the increase in students’ vocabulary. The researcher used the observation, test and documentation in collecting the data. The results of the research indicated that the implementation of gasing game was merely effective in improving the students’ vocabulary in terms of numerical grade scores. The results showed the improvement in each cycle as in the first cycle by 0 percent, in the second cycle by 48 percent, and in the third cycle by 96 percent which are categorized very good. The results concluded that this modified-gasing game can improve the Muhammadiyah 2 Singkawang Elementary School fourth grade students’ vocabulary significantly in the aspects of word guessing
Early Reading through Storytelling Activities
Storytelling has been a part of children’s life. They loved being told as well as telling a story. Being told a story made them see what has been read, and telling a story made them talk as they spoke it out. As the children learn a language, story is one effective way for them to learn a language. This study is aimed to find out to what extent storytelling could help young children with their early reading comprehension in terms of story-retell. One class in one national plus school has been the setting of the study with 13 students as the subjects. A mix method was implemented through a classroom action research design. This study came up with a significant result that storytelling activities have been effective ways to increase young children’s retell fluency, both in content and fluency. The help of pictures, cue cards, and flashcards has been very efficient in helping young children to have a better comprehension in their early reading. These teaching aids had also been able to motivate them to be more active and engaged during the class
Teacher’s Belief on Teaching Philosophy as Teachers Professionalism Platform
This study aims at presenting the teacher's belief on teaching philosophy as a teacher professionalism platform. It explores how the teacher perceives teaching philosophy as a teacher professionalism platform and in what ways teaching philosophy assists the teacher to refine his teaching. The research design of this study is basic interpretative study. It is used to identify the extent to which teaching philosophy is understood and practiced by teachers. There are general pattern findings of this study. The first finding is English teachers' perceived teaching philosophy builds reflective teachers. The second findings refers to reflected activity that copes with the teacher in refining suitable ways in facilitating students to learn. Teaching philosophy potentially assists teachers in teaching by providing various activities. Thus, it supports the teacher to be a professional English teacher
Implementing Task-Based Learning Strategy during the COVID-19 for Teaching English for Adult Learners
The purpose of this study is to find out the improvement of English learning results of Mataram State Islamic University students majoring in Da'kwah management and Communication by utilizing task-based learning strategies during covid-19. This study is a type of class action study with research subjects a student’s second semester of Da’kwah Fakulty. Data collection by way of in-depth interviews and direct observations. The research method used in research is qualitative descriptive. This research data includes the results of the study results and student responses regarding the utilization of task-based learning strategies. Techniques data collection of student learning results is carried out through tests in the form of test questions Objective. The data is descriptively analyzed using percentages. Analysis of learning process data obtained from observation data, and interviews are conducted qualitatively. The results showed there was a significant improvement in students' English speaking skills after taking part in online assignment-based learning. This proves that task-based English learning is effective in improving students' English speaking skills
The Differences between Key Words-Pictorial and After Reading Card Methods in English Vocabulary Mastery
This study aims to determine the differences in English vocabulary skills of students using the Keywords-Pictorial learning method with students who use the After Reading Card Game learning method. This study used a quasi-experimental research method with the study of Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population subjects in this study were all of the fifth grade students of MI Al-Istiqomah, Tangerang City, which numbered 50 students, taking a sample of 25 students in the first experimental class and 25 students in the second experimental class. The technique of collecting data using test questions instruments describing vocabulary skills consists of 20 valid and realistic questions. Based on the results of the study, testing the posttest hypothesis from the results of the t-test obtained tcount = 29.05 and table = 2.02, it can be concluded that there are significant differences between the posttest grade values of the first experimental class and the second experimental class. This can be interpreted that the English vocabulary abilities of students using the After Reading Card Game learning method are higher with students who use the Keywords-Pictorial learning method. Keywords: Keywords-Pictorial method; After Reading Card Game, mastery of vocabular
Need Analysis of English for Mechanical Engineering
To conduct an ESP instructional program, it is important to analyze the current situation of the students and the objectives of the program. This study explored the need analysis of English for mechanical engineering at Adisutjipto college of technology, Yogyakarta. This department offers aircraft maintenance, manufacture and material, and energy conversion majors that require the English instruction covers the needs of those concentrations. The data were collected from the students, lecturers, tracer study, and academic affair officers by distributing questionnaire, interviewing, and observing the classroom activities. The finding showed that the compositions of the three concentrations and should involve aerospace engineering materials, the presentation of the materials should focus on the language skills development based, the teaching technique should involve classroom and digital instructions and the instruction should be outcome based education (OBE).   Keywords: need analysis, ESP, mechanical, aerospace, engineerin
Students’ Perceptions towards The Utilization Of “Whatsapp†for Vocabulary Teaching and Learning
Society has enjoyed the ease of communication afforded by “Whatsappâ€, a popular freeware and cross-platform communication application. “Whatsappâ€â€™s popularity has invited educators to experiment with it in various ways to shore up education. This study was conducted to describe students’ perceptions on the use of “Whatsapp†for teaching and learning vocabulary. A vocabulary virtual class in the form of a “Whatsapp†group where students needed to enroll was created for that purpose. This virtual class exempted the students from physically attending the physical class as it enabled students to remotely attend the class. Teaching and learning methods of vocabulary in the virtual class included using pictures, translation, and sentence construction. At the end of the class, the students were to inform the researchers about their perceptions of the virtual class. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected through a paper-based questionnaire, which was distributed to all students in a face-to-face class, a session taking place two days prior to the research. The virtual vocabulary class that the researchers administered overall received positive feedbacks from the learners.
