Methodographies of Music: 
Ethnomethodological Studies of Practicing

One of the key distinctions between the research agendas of ethnomethodology and 
mainstream sociology can be formulated as the “missing what.” It alludes to how sociologists, 
who generally place a spotlight on their theoretical concerns, tend to “miss” the practices that are 
fundamental to practical concerns. Ethnomethodology provides a unique perspective. It seeks to 
discover, or recover, the “missing what” by examining how competent members of society make 
sense of their everyday circumstances through their accustomed practices without subduing them 
with abstract theorizing or social scientific methods. Ethnomethodology is the study of “people’s” 
(ethno) methods; it should not be confused with research methodology.
The following story illustrates this “missing what.” It comes from an unpublished manuscript 
by Harold Garfinkel from the early 1970s that, despite not having received formal publication, 
has been widely circulated.
On the basis of his studies of the gestural organization of ensemble musical play he [David 
Sudnow] speaks of the “Howard Becker phenomenon” in sociologists’ studies of jazz. To 
take Becker’s studies [(Becker 1951)] for example we learn that there are jazz musicians, 
where they work, who they work with, what they earn, how they get their jobs, or what 
the audience will request for them […] A curious of the reportage, Sudnow points out is 
that Becker’s articles speak of musicians’ work and do so by omitting entirely and exactly 
the practices that for those engage in them makes of what they are doing, makes up the 
recognizably just so; just what, just this going on: making music. 
Other examples of “missing what” may include, for instance, in studies of the workplace, 
conventional sociology often focuses on organizational structures and hierarchies while “missing”

the everyday practices and interactions that shape the practical work in which workers are 
routinely involved. Similarly, in leisure studies, the emphasis is often on situating leisure under 
theoretical considerations such as class struggle, risk society, “the lonely crowd,” or habitus, while 
“missing” the day-to-day experiences of doing leisure.
The pursuit of “missing what” has evolved into a successful research program known as the 
ethnomethodological studies of work since Sudnow first raised the issue fifty years ago. However, 
studies on music-making, which provided the foundation for the idea, have been relatively 
scarce. Yuki Yoshikawa’s Methodographies of Music is the second book (in the Japanese and 
English literatures) to devote an entire volume to ethnomethodological studies of music, following 
Sudnow (1978). I extend my sincere congratulations to Yoshikawa on the publication of this 
book and wish it would expand its readership. Although it is uncommon to review a Japanese 
book in English, I have decided to do so out of concern that language barriers may diminish the 
potential impact of the book. The Journal of Applied Sociology can be accessed through English-
language search engines.
Eight chapters comprise the book. The initial chapter of the study presents a comparison 
between lay observation and scientific observation. In this context, “scientific observation” 
refers to the practice of critically evaluating lay observations with a skeptical mindset. Scientific 
observation provides a formalized reinterpretation of lay observation, which is viewed as 
ambiguous and unsatisfactory. However Yoshikawa argues that the ambiguity arises only when 
these two types of observations are contrasted with each other. Yoshikawa directs his focus 
towards ethnomethodology in order to address the significance of lay observation as a topic in 
its own right.
The second chapter is a literature review. With a background in sociology and cultural 
anthropology, Yoshikawa situates ethnomethodological research within the larger context 
of music research. A review that grabbed my interest in particular discussed Peter Weeks’ 
ensemble studies and Sudnow’s self-reflection, which appear to have separate analytical themes. 
Yoshikawa contends that these distinctions are only superficial, as both approaches focus on 
the temporal arrangement of musical tones through instrumental performance. Honestly, this 
was never on my mind before reading Yoshikawa’s review. I agree with Yoshikawa’s concern 
that ethnomethodology has become less flexible in the study of music as a result of the heavy 
reliance on conversation analysis. Yoshikawa elaborates on these issues in the latter half of the 
book.
The third chapter addresses transcription in scientific research. Does the use of transcripts 
and other technologically advanced methods, such as video recordings, shift the goal away 
from casual observation and more closely align with scientific observation? According to

Yoshikawa, the question is not whether technology should be used, but whether it can serve as 
a reminder of lay observations. While transcription does involve some scientific observation, its 
primary objective is not to replicate a phenomenon. Instead, it serves as a means for members 
to effectively preserve what they know and do. This chapter presents a philosophy of social 
research and the uses of representation within musicology, specifically in relation to staves, 
transcriptions, and recordings.
Chapters 4 through 7 are devoted to practicing music. Everyone practices playing, irrespective 
of their level of expertise. Chapter 4 delves into an examination of ensemble synchronization 
as accomplished through reciprocal effort. Synchronization is an agreement among players; 
it becomes unattainable when one begins to play independently. Yoshikawa investigates 
the structural aspects of initiating synchronization, focusing on the sequence of actions. The 
identified sequence consists of three key actions: performance proposal, preparation, and 
“Einsatz,” (cue in English) which entails the sharing of preliminary actions prior to starting 
the music. This chapter refutes commonly leveled criticisms of ethnomethodological studies 
concerning the limitations of generalizability due to a small sample size. The phenomenon 
discussed in this chapter is a fundamental process any musician would engage in should 
they seek to establish an ensemble. The identified sequential structure of synchronization is 
a manifestation of the generalizability that musicians themselves make in their own musical 
practices. Same assertions hold true for the subsequent chapters.
Chapter 5 conducts a thorough analysis of the duo ensemble. In contrast to a concert setting, 
where interruptions during performances are generally deemed unacceptable, interruptions 
during rehearsals are common. The most common cause of interruptions is when a mistake is 
found. Yoshikawa highlights how, in addition to spoken words, musicians frequently use musical 
phrases to “express” and communicate. For example, the repeated phrase serves to indicate that 
the performer has played a wrong note, and the proposed solution entails a collaborative process 
of reassessing and rebuilding with one another. Musicians are well aware of and acknowledge 
the phenomenon as yet another recurring occurrence within the process of making music.
Chapter 6 provides an analysis of the process of tuning, specifically focusing on the final stages 
of this procedure. Tuning is not music, though it is a routine practice that Western classical 
musicians engage in on a regular basis with their respective instruments. The complete absence 
of verbal communication lends uniqueness to the data, but more importantly, it demonstrates 
that interaction competence is all that is needed to establish shared understanding. Yoshikawa 
identifies that the end of the tuning process is characterized by a series of repeated sounds 
without any tuning, followed by a moment of silence. The analysis is firmly rooted in the 
intelligibility of the action, a quality that is not dependent on random factors or mere intuition.

Chapter 7 of the study involves an analysis of Yoshikawa’s own personal jazz piano 
improvisations, which bears resemblance to Sudnow’s earlier studies. Given that Sudnow’s book 
is frequently referred to as proto-autoethnography, some scholars might classify this chapter as 
autoethnography. However, when this chapter is compared to the autoethnography of music 
(Bartlett and Ellis 2009), the only similarity is the researcher’s use of personal experiences 
as data. The autoethnography offers a self-reflective account of the researcher’s personal 
involvement with music, but it does not elucidate an account of how the researcher-musician 
creates music. Once again, we have the “missing what.” In contrast, Yoshikawa’s analysis 
demonstrates a methodical approach to distinguishing between correctly and incorrectly playing 
a musical note, emphasizing its intersubjective nature rather than being solely based on personal 
subjectivity. The chapter also demonstrates how the improvisation is both spontaneous and 
methodically ordered.
The final chapter, Chapter 8, provides a thorough overview of the empirical studies presented 
in this book. The book’s empirical studies on music making offer valuable insights into the 
practices and interactions that are often overlooked in conventional sociological research. 
Through careful analysis of ensemble playing synchronization, rehearsal interruptions, tuning 
processes, personal improvisations, and the relationship between lay observations and scientific 
observation, Yoshikawa sheds light on the “missing what” of music making and highlights the 
importance of ethnomethodological approaches in understanding the complexities of music 
making. These findings contribute to the fields of conversational analysis and performance 
analysis, demonstrating the potential of ethnomethodology to enhance our understanding 
of social interactions and everyday practices. Yoshikawa additionally addresses how lay 
observations, as exemplified in this work, may contribute to scientific observation, as the two are 
not mutually exclusive but the latter resides on the former.
I would strongly advise all scholars seeking to develop an understanding of ethnomethodology 
and its scope to read Chapters 1–3. Those who are familiar with ethnomethodology will 
nonetheless come across fresh and new insights in chapters 2 and 3. I approached the empirical 
part of the book as an ethnomethodologist and a Western classical music practitioner (I was 
trained as a pianist). The exhibits and analyses reminded me of numerous points that “struck a 
chord” and elicited agreement, affirming their certainty. If I may make one recommendation on 
future directions, expertise may become a potential area for future investigation. While the book 
focuses on practices that any musician would do, the same event may be carried out differently 
depending on the level of performance, given that proficient musicians apparently pursue 
different goals from novices.
Those without prior knowledge or experience in Western classical music would probably find

this book very challenging to read. Without being capable of reading staff notation, the majority 
of the analysis in this book (with the exception of Chapter 6, which uses piano roll notations) 
may seem incomprehensible. This is not the authorʼs fault, but due to the fact that the book is all 
about the artful practices of music-making.
Yuki Yoshikawa is an assistant professor in the Department of Contemporary Culture and 
Society at Rikkyo University as well as an amateur cellist in a period-instrument ensemble. This 
book is based on his dissertation, which he completed at Keio University.

いまから 20 年ほど前のことだったか、わたしはフランコ・モレッティの『ヨー
ロッパ小説の地図』の一節に魅せられてしまった─〈村も都市も宇宙でさえ
も視覚的に表象可能であるが、国民国家はそうではない。視覚的に表象不可能
な国民国家は、己れを表象できる唯一の象徴的形式として小説を発見した〉と
いうような内容だった。それ以来、イングランドの小説がどのようにイングラ
ンドという国民国家を表象しているかを、オースティン、Ｅ・ブロンテ、モリ
ス、ハーディ、ギシング、フォースター、ウルフ、イシグロなどの作品をとお
して具体的に確認することに熱中してきた。
立教英米文学会の講演では、ジョージ・エリオットの『フロス河の水車場』
（1860）をとりあげてみた。物語の年代は、「スウィング暴動」がはじまる半年
前、1830 年 2 月から 1840 年 9 月までのおよそ 10 年間である。1815 年にナポ
レオン戦争が終わり、それとともに「穀類の値のよかった黄金時代」も過ぎ去り、
その結果、「不作と不可思議な景気の変動」に苦しむ農民たちが脱穀機などの
農業機械の破壊に走ることになる時代、蒸気機関をとりいれ、地域社会をこえ
て物とお金を移動させることに積極的な人物と、土地にしがみつきそういった
ことに消極的な人物が、それぞれ成功者と失敗者に分かれていく時代だった。
また、それは、選挙権は国家に利害関係をもつ者─すなわち財産、それも

土地という永続的な財産をもつ者─に限定されるべきであるというジョン・
ロックの原則に代わるものとして、土地という不動産のほかにお金などの動産
も資産として認めるという新しい原則のもとで、都市のミドルクラスにも国政
への参加の権利を付与することになった第一次選挙法改正（1832）が実現した
時代、しかしそこから排除された労働者たちがチャーティスト運動をとおして
参政権を求める行動を起こし、ミドルクラスの人びとがそれを「無秩序」とし
ていよいよ恐怖していた時代だった。
さらにいえば、エリオットが『フロス河』を書いていた 1850 年代後半は、
国家にたいして財産というかたちではいかなる利害関係ももたない労働者にも
選挙権を認める第二次選挙法改正（1867 年に実現）にむけて、どのような論
理で労働者たちにも参政権をあたえ、包摂的な国民国家をつくっていくか─
そのための議論が沸騰しつつあった時代でもあった。たとえばＪ・Ｓ・ミルは
『代議制統治論』（1861）において、財産所有という「偶然」とは無関係に、労
働者も女性も、「国家の諸問題」にかんする「賢明で活発な議論」をつうじて
「同胞感情をはぐくみ、一個の『大きな共同体』」をつくりあげるという国民国
家論を提示している。
それにたいしてジョージ・エリオットは『フロス河』において、より情動的
な包摂的国民国家論を展開している。
いかなる熱帯の棕櫚の林も珍奇な羊歯も見事な幅広の花弁を誇る花も、こ
の故
ふるさと
郷の情景（home scene）ほどわたしの心の奥深くの繊細な琴線を震わ
せることはないだろう。これら見なれた花たち、忘れがたい鳥たちの声、
気まぐれに光輝くこの空、そして思い思いの生垣によってそれぞれに個性
があたえられている鋤きかえされた草の生えた畑─そういったものがわ
れわれの想像力の母語（the mother-tongue of our imagination）であり、束
の間に過ぎ去ったわれわれの幼年時代の時間が残した、解きほぐしがたい
微妙な連想をともなう言語なのである。
トムとマギーのあいだに存在しているような、同じ「故
ふるさと
郷の情景」を共有する
ことによって生じる情動的な結びつき─愛郷心といっていいだろう─を基
盤とした国民国家。しかしケヴィン・A・モリスンのいわゆる「（故郷の）風
景によって形成される主体」が、故郷という小さな共同体をこえて、愛国心の
対象となる国家という大きな共同体へと拡大していくには、いったいどのよう

なプロセスが必要なのだろうか。
残念ながら、そこまでは完璧かと思われたモリスンの議論は、愛郷心と愛国
心、「故郷の情景」と国民国家のあいだを飛躍するのには失敗しているのでは
なかろうか。少なくともわたしは、同じ問題に風景という同じ視点からアプロー
チしているエリザベス・Ｋ・ヘルシンガーの議論のほうに説得力（と恥ずかし
ながら感動）をおぼえた。最後に、彼女の議論にかんするわたしなりの気まま
な解釈を記しておきたい─
都市や植民地に移住して田園を失った人びととその子孫たち、いわばディア
スポラといえるようなおびただしい数の人びとが、「故郷の情景」だけでなく、
その固有の記憶さえ失っていく。それにつれて「故郷の情景」を、目の前にあ
る都市のスラムの風景や植民地の熱帯の風景の反転として思い描くことにな
る。そのような「疎外と距離」の当然の結果として、「田園のイングランド」は「理
想化」され、そして田園風景が標準化され画一化されはじめるのである。コン
スタブルの絵は、それぞれの故郷の風景の記憶を失った人びとにとっての、そ
のような人びとのための〈標準〉的な故郷の風景になる。他方、第一次大戦中
の兵士募集のポスターの絵は田園風
景の〈画一〉化の例としてとらえる
ことができるだろう。
そのような標準化・画一化された
風景は地域性をこえて、都市や植民
地をふくめさまざまな場所の国民を
統合する情動的な絆としてのナショ
ナル・アイコンになっていくだろ
う。アントニー・スミスが強調する
ように、ナショナリズムは近代的な
創造物でありながら、前近代的な核
をもっている。しばしばその核の象
徴となったのは失われた田園の風景
であり、黄金時代としての歴史であ
る。ジョシュア・D・エスティが述
べるように、「産業と帝国の近代経
済」が発展すればするだけ、「イン
グランドは、ロマンチックなナショ

ナリズムがその本質的な核として認識するもの［＝田園風景］とはまったく異
なるものへと発展していかざるをえない」が、それと同時にいよいよ「その本
質的な核」を希求することになるだろう。
