陸前高田訪問記

はじめに 
この訪問記は、2024 年 8 月 8 日に行われた陸前高田市立図書館と立教大学司書課程の連
携プロジェクト「なんでも版画にしてみよう！」へのボランティア参加を中心に、2024 年 8
月 7 日から 9 日にかけて岩手県陸前高田市を訪問した際の訪問記である。3 日間の訪問期間
では、版画ボランティア活動のほか、東日本大震災の被災状況を知る機会や被災経験を伺う
場面も多く、陸前高田市の現在を様々な角度から知ることができる数日間となった。 
陸前高田市への訪問経験があるボランティア参加者も散見されたが、私個人においては陸
前高田市への訪問は初めてであり、版画経験も学校の授業で触れた程度に過ぎない。東日本
大震災に関しては、震災発生時は小学三年生だったため震災の悲惨さを完全に理解していた
とは言い難い。東日本大震災との接点が徐々に薄れていく中で、今回直接被災した方のお話
を伺えたことは自分にとって貴重かつ重要な経験となった。 
本稿では、版画ボランティアと東日本大震災関連事項の二軸を中心とする。東日本大震災
関連事項については個人的な感想も多く含まれるため、お話をお伺いした方々や被災者の方
の意見とそぐわない可能性もあるが、ご容赦いただきたい。 
 
版画ボランティア活動を通して 
 版画ワークショップは小学生以下の子どもやその保護者の方を対象として開催された。
「なんでも版画にしてみよう！」とある通り、身の回りにあるものを版画の材料として版画
を体験してもらうというワークショップである。私たちボランティア参加者は、ワークショ
ップの前日から当日にかけて材料となる植物の収集を行った。植物の収集を行った際、東京
と比べて植物の種類が豊富であることに気づかされた。自然豊かな土地柄もあり、東京で同
じように版画ワークショップを開催しても材料の段階で地域性が現れるのではないかとす
ら思うほど、初めて見る植物の多さに驚いたのである。 
このような様々な種類の植物に加え、布や輪ゴムなども版画の材料として提供した結果、
参加者の方それぞれのオリジナリティが際立つ作品が多く出来上がった。版を押した紙を乾
かしている棚には、似た材料を組み合わせて材料そのものの形が浮かびあがるような版画の
傍ら、様々な材料をふんだんに用いることで原型をあえて崩した版画が置かれていた。版画
の色も一色のみや二色使い、部分的に色を変えるといった参加者それぞれの独創性が現れて
いて見ごたえのある作品ばかりであった。 
小さなお子様と一緒にご参加されていた保護者の方からは、家だと汚れを気にして絵の具
を使った遊びができないためワークショップの開催を聞いて嬉しかった、という感想を直接
いただき、今回のワークショップが非日常体験として捉えていただけたことを実感した。 
 
東日本大震災と陸前高田市 
陸前高田市訪問中、東日本大震災発生時に小学校の校長だった菅野祥一郎さんや、菅野さ
んの元教え子の方から東日本大震災のお話を伺うことができた。震災発生時に菅野さんを含
めた教員の指示で生徒全員を避難させ無事に津波を免れたというお話を聞き、咄嗟の判断と
行動力が人生を左右することを改めて思い知らされた。

菅野さんからお話をお伺いした後の質疑応答で「震災を小説や映画などで取り上げること
に関してどう思うか」という内容の質問が投げかけられた。菅野さんの「震災を知ってもら
うきっかけとしては良いと思うが決して震災の全容を表しているわけではないことは理解
してほしい」という趣旨の回答を聞き、災害や災害の教訓を後世に伝え残す難しさの根幹は
「震災を語る」ことの難しさにあるのだろうと感じたことを強く覚えている。伝承する重要
性を誰よりも強く理解しているのは大きく深い傷を負った方々であることは言うまでもな
い。ただ、辛い記憶を辿る苦しさや災害の悲惨さを言葉にした際に改めて感じざるを得ない
残酷さや後悔の念を抱えなければならないのもいわゆる「当事者」と呼ばれる方々である。
語られた震災がすべてではなく、むしろ語られていない／語ることができない震災の存在に
も意識を向けることが重要であることを痛感した。 
翌日菅野さんの元教え子の方から被災経験を伺う機会があったが、自分と同い年であるこ
とが自己紹介で判明したため親近感を抱くとともに、自分がもし陸前高田市で生まれていた
ら同じ状況に遭遇していたらと勝手に自分を投影しながらお話を伺っていた。避難の段階で
ご家族の方が「もう子どもたちは無理だと思った」と感じていたことを伺い、その発言の裏
に震災発生後の数日間でどれほどの願いと絶望が含まれているのかと言葉が出なかった。人
前で震災経験を話すこと自体が初めてだとおっしゃっていたが、とても丁寧かつわかりやす
くお話されている様子が印象的である。お二方のお話を通して改めて東日本大震災の被災経
験や被災に付随する辛さが人それぞれであることを思い知らされた。 
お二人のお話を伺った後、津波伝承館周辺の震災遺構を訪れたのだが、自分が想像した震
災よりもはるかに凄惨な光景であることに衝撃を覚えた。震災遺構の視覚情報だけでも衝撃
的であるが、「残す」と判断が下されたものだけが震災遺構として存在しており、震災発生時
はおそらく自分が立っている場所を含め見渡す限り一面が同じような状況だったのだろう
と推測する。実際に被災地に足を運ばないとわからないことの多さを身をもって感じ、東日
本大震災の印象が大きく変わったことを実感した。 
 
おわりに 
 今回の版画ボランティア活動とお二方による東日本大震災の被災経験のお話を通して、陸
前高田市が東日本大震災と向き合いながら生活することを大切にしている印象を強く持っ
た。版画ワークショップの会場であった「奇跡の一本松ホール」は、東日本大震災の津波を
乗り越えた「奇跡の一本松」の名がつけられている。ワークショップに参加していただいた
子どもたちは東日本大震災を直接経験してはおらず、伝聞や映像資料でしか実態を知らない。
今の子どもたちが震災を知りたい・知らなければならないと感じた際に自ら資料収集の出来
る場が複数設けられているという点で、震災を記録し伝える姿勢が強く見受けられた。 
陸前高田市の地域の特徴として東日本大震災は避けて通れないものではあることは言う
までもない。しかし、東日本大震災をタブー化せずに身近なものとして展開させることで被
災の有無にかかわらず東日本大震災を知ることができ、次の世代へと引き継ぐことができる。
地震大国である日本においてこの先いつどこで大地震が発生するかわからないが、誰にでも
起こり得ることとして自分事に捉える貴重な場として機能していることを知ることができ
た。今回の訪問で実際に見聞きしたことを今後に活かすとともに、自分なりのかかわり方で
東日本大震災の伝承に貢献していきたい。

Research on Spatial Connectivity of Historical and Cultural Districts Based on Vitality Enhancement
1. Research Background and Significance
In China's historic cities, the traditional street network 
has often been preserved intact, forming the fundamental 
urban fabric of central districts. These historically evolved 
street systems complement one another, collectively 
shaping distinctive regional characteristics within cultural 
heritage districts. As China's urban spatial restructuring 
increasingly focuses on enhancing residents' quality of life, 
understanding vitality determinants and enhancement 
pathways constitutes a crucial direction for historic district 
regeneration. As vital carriers of spatial character, street 
networks embody socio-cultural consensus and serve as 
primary venues for tourist-local interactions and vitality 
manifestation. Consequently, properly recognizing and 
respecting their structural characteristics proves essential 
for revitalization strategies.
Against this backdrop, this study investigates the spatial 
relationship between street network connectivity and 
district vitality, providing theoretical foundations and 
planning strategies for heritage district renewal. Specific 
objectives include:
(1)  Characterizing morphological patterns of historic 
street networks and establishing typologies based on 
connectivity metrics.
(2)  Examining whether spatial vitality distribution 
exhibits significant variations across street network 
typologies.
(3)  Proposing actionable street space optimization 
strategies for vitality enhancement. 
Adopting a morphological approach, this research 
quantitatively reveals correlation mechanisms between 
spatial connectivity and vitality distribution. Theoretically, 
it advances quantitative methodologies in heritage district 
studies while offering spatial perspectives on vitality 
formation. The findings inform street network optimization 
and functional planning in urban renewal projects.
2. Research Methods and Data
2.1 Research Subjects

This study focuses on the 29 first batch of China's 
Historical and Cultural Districts, which were announced 
by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural 
Development and the National Cultural Heritage

Administration. Specifically, it examines districts that meet 
the following criteria: (1) intact street network 
preservation, (2) well-maintained historical features, and 
(3) established road connections with surrounding urban 
areas (as illustrated in Table 1).
2.2 Research Methods
This study uses network analysis and space syntax 
theory to examine street network morphology in historic 
districts. The methodology and key metrics are outlined 
below: Network analysis models offer a novel approach 
for data visualization and quantitative analysis, simplifying 
complex systems to reveal relational patterns. Modularity, 
a key metric proposed by Newman (2004), assesses the 
strength of community structures within networks. Its 
value ranges from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating a 
more clustered road network prone to segmentation, and 
lower values indicating a more integrated network. The 
modularity calculation formula is as follows:
Where Aij represents the weight of the edge between 
node i and node j (in unweighted graphs, this is either 0 
or 1)； ki denotes the degree of node i (i.e., the number of 
edges connected to node i)；m is the total number of 
edges in the entire network；δ(ci,cj) is an indicator 
function that equals 1 if nodes i and j belong to the same 
community, and 0 otherwise.
Space syntax, developed by Hillier and Hanson (1984), 
is a topological spatial analysis method that examines 
spatial connectivity. The Choice metric quantifies how 
often a street segment appears on the shortest paths 
between node pairs, reflecting the likelihood of pedestrian 
flow. Areas with higher choice values attract more 
pedestrians.
On the other hand, spatial vitality consists of vitality 
agents (space users, including residents and tourists) and 
vitality carriers (built environment factors such as location 
accessibility). The external manifestations of vitality are 
quantified through Baidu Heatmaps, Baidu Street View 
imagery, and POI (Point of Interest) distribution data. In 
this study, open-source data (Baidu Heatmaps and POIs) 
are employed to systematically assess vitality levels within 
historic districts.
3. Research Findings
3.1  Classification of Historical and Cultural 
Districts Based on Connectivity 
Characteristics
This study employs a dual-metric approach to classify 
street network morphologies in historic districts: (1) 
choice analysis, which measures the individual connectivity 
strength of roads; and (2) modularity analysis, which 
evaluates the overall structural connectivity of the road 
network system.

The results (Figure 1, Table 2) demonstrate that, based 
on the distribution patterns of these two metrics (Choice 
and modularity), historical and cultural districts can be 
classified into four distinct typologies: Type A (high 
modularity - high Choice), Type B (high modularity - low 
Choice), Type C (low modularity - high Choice), Type D 
(high modularity - low Choice).

The classification shows that Type A districts, with a 
modularity index ≥ 0.7 and a Choice value over 30% 
higher than similar districts, have strong internal 
connectivity and a tight network structure. The road 
network is well-organized but lacks a clear hierarchy. Type 
B districts, typically rectangular or tree-shaped, feature a 
distinct hierarchical structure with high connectivity and 
many T-junctions. Type C districts, with a tree-like 
structure, center vitality around primary streets, while 
secondary roads complement this, promoting balanced 
development. Type D districts (low modularity and 
Choice) have a hierarchical road network with dominant 
arterials, T-junctions, and many dead ends, resulting in 
lower accessibility and connectivity.
3.2  The Spatial Vitality Distribution 
Characteristics of Various Historical and 
Cultural Districts
The study conducted a comparative analysis between 
the spatial distribution of vitality hubs and road network 
connectivity. By evaluating the clustering intensity of 
vitality centers, this research assessed the influence of 
street spatial connectivity on urban vitality patterns. 
Figure 2 shows that Type A Districts exhibit uniformly 
distributed vitality centers scattered throughout the area, 
presenting a "multi-nodal" pattern anchored by various 
historical sites; Type B districts, typically cultural or scenic 
districts, concentrate vitality centers along the primary 
axis, with economic activities focused on main 
thoroughfares, displaying a "single-core, multi-node" 
development pattern; Type C districts feature clustered 
vitality centers, but due to weak connectivity between 
road modules, overall vitality appears dispersed. These 
smaller-scale commercial districts rely not only on main 
axes but also show higher vitality contributions from 
secondary and branch roads; Type D districts, with 
relatively weak road connectivity, struggle to form vibrant 
hubs due to poor housing quality, inadequate public 
services, and constrained road structures. Type D's vitality 
centers remain small, resulting in a "scattered point" 
distribution pattern.

3.3  Vitality Enhancement Strategies Based on 
Road Network Connectivity
This study reveals distinct patterns in vitality center 
distribution across the four district types. Therefore, 
tailored vitality enhancement strategies should be 
developed for each district type (as shown in Table 3).
On the other hand, integrating road network 
characteristics, spatial optimization, and planning 
governance can be approached in the following ways:
(1) Connectivity-Driven Road Optimization: Prioritize 
core roads by assessing connectivity. Maximize high-

integration sections to improve open space interfaces and 
eliminate spatial barriers. For low-integration areas, extend 
cul-de-sacs and remove underperforming sections to free 
up space. Reconfigure peripheral roads as buffers to 
enhance overall network efficiency.
(2) Enhancing Network Efficiency with Auxiliary 
Pathways: Historic districts feature both main roads and 
alleys, which complement each other and align with local 
habits. During renewal, the district's spatial structure 
should be considered to ensure coordinated development. 
Removing alleys with low choice values reduces 
connectivity, so adding alleys or similar pathways can 
significantly improve road network efficiency and 
circulation.
(3) Modularity-Informed Functional Zoning: By 
assessing connectivity and modular division, each module’
s characteristics can guide functional optimization. Well-
connected modules should be developed together, 
enhancing regional vitality. This is particularly valuable for 
residential historic districts, promoting organic integration 
of daily life, commerce, and spatial organization.

4. Conclusion
Road space plays a crucial role in enhancing the vitality 
of historic districts. Previous studies indicate that areas 
with cohesive road structures are more likely to form 
vibrant hubs, underscoring the need to understand and 
leverage the spatial characteristics of historic districts 
during conservation and renewal. This study examines the 
connectivity of road networks and vitality distribution in 
historic districts, proposing strategies for enhancing 
vibrancy. By applying modularity and spatial choice degree 
metrics, 29 typical Chinese historic districts were classified 
into four types. These types reflect different patterns of 
spatial vitality: Type A (evenly distributed vitality), Type B 
(concentrated along main axes), Type C (dispersed with 
significant secondary roads), and Type D (weak vitality 
without major hubs). To optimize vitality, strategies were 
proposed at three levels: Macro (regional buffer zones), 
Meso (functional districts activation), and Micro 
(enhancing key routes and connectivity with alleys). 
The research limitation of this study includes that it 
emphasizes typological comparisons of road connectivity 
but does not delve into the spatial causal mechanisms 
between network configuration and vitality. Additionally, 
the findings are based on specific case studies, and 
broader validation will be explored in future research.

and diversity of urban life, with higher vitality 
indicating greater attraction and activity, and lower 
vitality suggesting underutilized space. "Road 
connectivity" is measured by the "connection degree," 
which quantifies the number of connections between 
a street and others, reflecting spatial linkages within 
the network.
