A Review of Digital Game-based Language Learning (DGBLL) Studies: Utilization of Commercial Off-the-shelf Games and Implications for Future Research
application/pdfIn this review, the evolution of technology in language learning was first explored. It then delves into the utilization of educational games, addressing challenges associated with the development and implementation. Next, the focus turns to the incorporation of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (henceforth COTS) games in Digital Game-Based Language Learning (henceforth DGBLL) studies. An in-depth analysis of eleven previous DGBLL studies that investigated second language or foreign language learning by using COTS games clarifies the various methodologies and points out similarities and distinctions across studies. Suggestions for future studies in DGBLL are derived from the insights presented in the selected research.departmental bulletin pape

The social contexts of The Flowing Light of the Godhead by Mechthild of Magdeburg 7 : Papal Primacy 4
application/pdfSome grounds show that the episode in the Gospel according to St. Matthew 16:18 in which Damasus I claimed the Primacy of the Bishop of Rome is only a fiction imported later into the Bible, and it is very doubtful that St. Peter served as the Bishop of Rome and suffered martyrdom in Neronian Rome. But at that time, no one remained who knew exactly about his acts and death. And so the traditions about St. Peter, regarded as facts, have come down even to the present day. Furthermore, not only the Roman Bishops but also other Bishops in the western part of the Roman Empire began to construct stories, and circulated them as “traditions” in order to establish the authority of the Roman Church, the only one “Sedes Apostolica” in the western part of the Roman Empire, and the church of the capital of the Empire where Jesus Christ was born. This tendency continued ever after.
But as a matter of course, for the bishops of the Eastern Church, with its many Sedes Apostolicas that had the very same importance as the Roman Church, the unreasonable claim for the Primacy of the Bishop of Rome was not acceptable, and the insistence of the Roman Church on this claim would lead to the Schism of the East.departmental bulletin pape
Case Analysis of Learners’ Questions for Mutual Understanding in Conversations with Japanese Speakers in Their First Meetings : About the visitor session for the learners to apply what they learned in the online class
The International Centre of Gakushuin University has been implementing an online Japanese language program for students from partner universities who wish to participate in the exchange program but have failed to meet the prescribed Japanese language proficiency standards (equivalent to JLPT N4 level) to acquire basic Japanese language skills in the six months before their arrival in Japan. The program consists of self-study using an e-learning website, one-on-one online lessons between teacher and learner, and a visitor session in which students practice what they have learned in the online lessons. In the visitor session, learners engage in a one-on-one conversation with a Japanese speaker they have never met before. In this paper, we take up and describe questions the learners asked for mutual understanding in the conversations in the visitor session conducted in FY2021. We analyze(1) in-depth questions,( 2) reciprocal questions, and( 3) questions that indicate what they noticed in the immediately preceding conversation or exchange. We then consider what can be done before and after the visitor session to promote learners’ awareness of aiming for mutual understanding.論説(Articles)departmental bulletin pape

The Kumamoto Dialect in Selected Mangas
application/pdfThe period of “reinvention of the Japanese dialect” began toward the end of the 1970s; however, the changing attitude of the Japanese society toward dialects and its speakers became more visible in pop culture in the twenty-first century. I analyzed mangas where the characters use the Kumamoto dialect, and sought to answer three questions: what is the typical role of the dialect-speaking character?; how is the dialect used?; and how does it appear? I identified that the typical dialect-user is a school-age character who is young, with traits such as friendliness, eagerness, and the culture/tradition promoting function. Moreover, dialect is mostly used—publicly and privately—with hierarchically lower or equal classes. Finally, as the dialect is represented the most by grammatical and phonetic expressions, it is simplified for intelligibility.Research Articlesdepartmental bulletin pape
