    No full text
Koha is an open-source Integrated Library System (ILS) developed in New Zealand and deployed for the first time in January of 2000 for Horowhenua Library Trust. Koha is a full-fledged software with basic and advanced features. It fits the needs of libraries of any size for its easiness and versatility. In particular, Koha is suitable to all institutions who want to automate their libraries using a system that allows a complete control over data and software itself.

In the quarter just ended, a lot of activities were carried out by CILEA team providing support to SBN poles. In particular, for the Polo USM, that is moving to Sebina OL, CILEA has made the first and important activity essential to the success of the process. Other important activities were carried out for the pole Unix client / server (two UNIMARC imports, both completed successfully) and the pole LO2 (customization of the OPAC for the Library of the Regional Council of Lombardia).Nel trimestre appena trascorso, diverse attività sono state svolte dai team CILEA che forniscono servizi ai poli SBN.

IPDPS 2009: 23rd IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium

IPDPS is an important international event for engineers and scientists to present their latest research findings in the fields of parallel processing and distributed computing. The themes of IPDPS 2009 were tied together by the great interest of the scientific community for the GPU computing. This kind of technology seems very promising because GPUs are intrinsically and massively parallel with a consequent tremendous computing power if compared to a modern single CPU.IPDPS costituisce un importante evento internazionale dedicato alla divulgazione e promozione dei molteplici aspetti del calcolo e dei processi paralleli e distribuiti.

In the past years, several relevant projects in education and communication environmenthave contributed to develop and deploy modern videoconference infrastructures. In this framework CASPUR is playing a significant role, promoting and diffusing videoconferencetechnologies among its scientific partners and public administration. ConferencingService Center (CSC) is an innovative solution for integrating communicationand collaboration services, which promotes audio media as the main communicationchannel. A CSC user gets benefits from audio and data communications using a virtualroom for his meetings, eliminating or lowering barriers of distance and cost of travel. In this way, CSC helps public and private organizations to improve efficiency of internalcommunication and to reduce costs. The CSC web portal service is accessible at http://csc.caspur.it, seven days a weekand 24 hours a day; through this portal, conferencing services can be planned, managedand controlled. It encompasses the following features:• Accounts management in organizational hierarchy• Services booking and scheduling• On line service management• Activity analysis and reportsAs far services are concerned, CSC comprises the following ones:• Audioconferencing: accessing a virtual room using a telephone for voice and a pcor mobile device for data• VideoConferencing: IP/ISDN based virtual rooms for audio and video conference• Webconferencing: a java application built to share data in combination with oneof the two services above• Webstreaming: a customizable live or on demand video broadcastFurther any technological consideration, teleconferencing and related travels reductioncontributes to lower CO2 production.Ing.

    No full text
At the end of 2008, CASPUR has released to its users a new HPC system. The new system,built-up by ClusterVision, has 258 nodes with two quad-core AMD Opteron processors, for a total of 2.064 cores. Nodes are linked through a broad band and low latencyInfiniband switch and have a total of 4.5Tbyte of dynamic memory. The system delivers17.3 TFlops (Rpeak) and 13.6 TFlops (Rmax). Performances and total core-hours peryear have grown 15 and 12 times respectively whilst cost/GFlops has declined to 1/40of the previous one. According to CASPUR, the process adopted to acquire the systemhas been a best practice, with respect of technology and economics results, suitablefor being used in future procurements. The article intends to illustrate such process, underliningmain considerations and motivations in terms of technology, innovation, userneeds adopted to define kind and size of the system as well as the parameters usedto perform the choice. Some more is reported about world-wide HPC innovation scenario, stressing differences between HPC procurement in Europe and in the USA. Eventually,a couple of draft proposals to improve the effectiveness of overall HPCinvestments in Italy
