Open source in biblioteca: how to?

    No full text
Open source applications become more and more widespread against proprietary systems in every field. It is important to avoid mistakes that can compromise services and increase costs. This short contribution points to some elements that need attention when a cost-benefit analysis is undertaken before the choice of open source applications for libraries or e-publishing services.

BOA is the Milano-Bicocca University repository carried out in the context of the SURplus project in June 2008 in order to place in archives the whole scientific production of the University. With BOA the University aims at creating a complete and inter-workable database of all its scientific publications, a database from which it is possible to feed the remaining SURplus modules, to get consultation and bibliographic citations statistics, to extract information to insert into other databases.BOA (Bicocca Open Archive) è il repository dell'Università di Milano-Bicocca per l'archiviazione della produzione scientifica di Ateneo, creato nell'ambito del progetto SURplus nel giugno 2008.

The application SBN Unix C/S handles the feature Import UNIMARC, allowing to obtain information on the data of pole and library from a database, without conversation with SBN. In 2008, CILEA gained a remarkable expe-rience on the usage of this procedure, importing data for some libraries belonging to the MIL pole. The chances offered by the procedure and the successful imports render Import UNIMARC a useful activity both for libraries belonging to SBN and for libraries wanting to join it.L’applicativo SBN Unix C/S dispone della funzionalità Import UNIMARC che permette di acquisire sulle basi dati di polo e biblio informazioni derivanti da un data base gestito senza colloquio con SBN.

On April the first MRSC conference outside Manchester took place in Belfast. FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and GP-GPU (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit) accelerators are going to become an important piece of high performance clusters, in spite of the technical difficulties. This fact is helping to turn actual the forecasting vision of clusters with heterogeneous nodes, in which are interested the most important research computing centres.

Supercomputing is the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis. Attendees become immersed in the latest state-of-the-field developments in technology, applications, vendor products, research results, national policy and national/ international initiatives. Supercomputing is the one place attendees can see tomorrow’s technology being used to solve world-class challenge problems today. CILEA participated actively to the Supercomputing 2008 conference presenting its resources and services.

ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstratethe scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The partners in the project arethe European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, the People´s Republic of China,India, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA. ITER will be constructedin Europe, at Cadarache in the South of France.A prototype of a laser In Vessel Viewing System was developed at ENEA laboratoriesin Frascati, which uses the amplitude modulated laser radar concept and it is conceivedto withstand the severe ITER conditions. The IVVS (In Vessel Viewing System) probe hasbeen designed and built to perform sub-millimetric three-dimensional images insideITER during maintenance procedure and it is based on an intrinsically radiation resistantconcept and architecture.CASPUR has developed the control/visualization software of the inspection system, which drives all the operations needed to perform an inspection: it is a graphical applicationthat starts an acquisition, performs the necessary data conversion to speedup theanalysis, archives and manages previous acquisitions, displays the reconstructed 3dscene, possibly comparing it with CAD data, while providing a range of image analysisand filtering tools

The EUPHORIC project (EUropean Public Health Outcome Research and Indicators Collection)was funded by the European Commission, Directorate General for Health andConsumers, under the Program of Community Action in the Field of Public Health (2003–2008). The project focused on the strand of action “to improve information and knowledgefor the development of public health”.The EUPHORIC project aimed to define a common set of outcome indicators in someclinically relevant areas and to validate them among the participating European countries. The development of health indicators, as well as the collection and exchange of informationwithin and among Member States are relevant activities necessary for theimplementation of a public health monitoring system. Monitoring the efficiency andefficacy of different health systems at Community level enables the Commission andMember States to set appropriate strategies, policies and actions in order to guaranteethe quality of public healthcare.• The project was divided into three phases:• Survey: to make an inventory of outcome indicators in participating countries;• Pilot: to test selected indicators in participating countries;• Dissemination: to make results available on a web site. The project was guided by a network of 15 institutions from 10 European countriesand Israel. The network played a crucial role in the development of a joint effort toprovide a valuable source of information. The Istituto Superiore di Sanità acted as coordinationcentre and CASPUR as technological partner providing technical consultancyand support for both the design and the implementation of the website together withthe deployment and the housing of the site itself
