From a narratological point of view, metalepsis is defined as a transgression of the narrative hierarchy in which an entity belonging to a higher level finds itself acting at a lower level, and vice versa. This paper offers an analysis of metalepsis’s expressive functions and philosophical implications. It is primarily highlighted its power to illustrate – using the specific expressive means of literature – some of the deepest problems of thought. Indeed, the paradoxical level-crossing that characterizes metalepsis turns up in intellectual activities apparently located quite far from the territory of artistic and literary creation – such as logic, metaphysics, philosophy of language and psychoanalysis. Our goal is to demonstrate that metalepsis’s expressive potential goes far beyond the representation of the problematic relationship between fact and fiction, as the metaleptic structure narratively reproduces a series of mental operations performed by the thought every time it is looking for its own limits

In the People\u27s Republic of China, during the last twenty years, online literature has emerged as a form of popular literature and long novels published and daily updated by users are the main form of fiction circulating on online platforms. Using concepts developed by Gérard Genette, this article analyzes the paratext of some web novels published on Starting Point and especially the contents within the section "related to the text," a space preceding the novel in which writers publish different kinds of news and information. The analysis of these contents highlighted some practices and strategies within the relationship between the subjects involved in this form of literature and confirmed the centrality of readers and the virtual community.

Tales on the Origin of Life in Primo Levi’s Works

This article investigates Primo Levi’s representations of the origin of life, particularly considering his essays and science-fiction short stories. After introducing the two main sources of inspiration that Levi refers to when writing narratives on this subject, classical and biblical mythologies and Darwinian evolutionary theory, the article offers a close reading of two short stories, “I sintetici” and “Disfilassi”, that depict a moment of ‘second genesis’ set in the near future. This process is seen by Levi from an ecological perspective in relation to the environmental risks that human technology and overpopulation pose to our planet. Following the analysis of the writer’s essays about recent chemical and biological theories on how life originated on Earth, the last paragraph focuses on the tangencies between Levi’s investigation of the origin of life and his reflections on the source of literary creativity, summed up by the short story “Carbonio”.This article investigates Primo Levi’s representations of the origin of life, particularly considering his essays and science-fiction short stories. The present essay aims to analyze stylistically and thematically the works of Francesco Pecoraro, paying particular attention to the novels La vita in tempo di pace and Lo stradone. Through a comparative close reading aimed at placing in mutual dialogue the two novels and the short stories collected in the volume Camere e stanze, the main objective is to investigate, on the one hand, the formal and compositional processes through which Pecoraro reworks the genre of the novel-essay and declines it according to peculiar inventive resolutions; on the other, to illuminate the expressive resources and narrative operations through which the subjectivity of his characters enters into dialectical tension with the surrounding reality and urban space

    The Neural Secrets of Narration

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a network of brain regions responsible for active or passive narration and the sharing of experiences. The ability to simulate experiences and use memories to construct hypothetical tales about how people might behave is a fundamental skill in building a social aggregate as it allows us to foreshadow the consequences of our actions and reflect on the intentions of others, simulating their experiences to anticipate their behavior. We can process imaginary situations whose accuracy is a measure of our social skills since the closer the imagination approaches social reality, the better we negotiate our social worlds. The DMN is responsible for these activities that encompass the frontal and parietal structures of the brain along the midline, the lateral and medial temporal lobes, and the lateral parietal cortex. This work reviews the DMN in all its aspects, both in the construction of narrative plots and in the preparation of believable and immersive emotional scenarios, including endocrine outcomes (oxytocin and cortisol)

U.S. Fiction in the Age of Authenticity: Earnestness and Digital Epitexts in Leilani’s Luster

This essay aims to explore the interrelation of the widespread use of digital epitextual material and the common practice, in post-postmodern U.S. fiction, to employ characters and character-narrators that share some biographical details with their authors. Specifically, this essay attends to narrative communication when an autobiographical connection between authors and characters is established not textually, but paratextually, through digital epitexts to be found, for instance, on authors’ social media profiles. Through the analysis of Raven Leilani’s Luster (2020), I will show how digital epitexts acquire a central role for contemporary narrative dynamics: it is through them that many novels realize the author-character connection providing fiction with a layer of alleged authenticity meant to reinforce the post-postmodern tendency to earnestly engage with ethical and political issues. This essay aims to explore the interrelation of the widespread use of digital epitextual material and the common practice, in post-postmodern U.S. fiction, to employ characters and character-narrators that share some biographical details with their authors. Women Translating Women: Resisting the Male Intellectual Canon in Eliza Hayley’s Essays on Friendship and Old-Age, by the Marchioness de Lambert (1780)

In 1780 the English translator and essayist Eliza Ball Hayley (b.1750-1797) published Essays on Friendship and Old-Age, by the Marchioness de Lambert. The text was a translation of two of the many philosophical treatises written by the French philosopher Anne-Thérèse de Lambert (1647-1733). Addressing the chronological, linguistic, and geographical distance between the authors and their philosophical thought, this article examines the motivations behind Hayley’s translation, regarding them as an act of resistance to the predominant contemporary male intellectual discourse, dismissive of de Lambert’s influence. Furthermore, it suggests that through the act of translating, Hayley is in fact recovering de Lambert and her (gendered) contribution to the history of ideas, while in parallel she is asserting her own place within this intellectual continuum by benefiting from de Lambert’s legacy, and thus contributing to, and sustaining, a female genealogy of thought. In 1780 the English translator and essayist Eliza Ball Hayley (b.1750-1797) published Essays on Friendship and Old-Age, by the Marchioness de Lambert.

The transformation processes that have affected the comics field between the 20th and 21st centuries are strictly linked with the digitization and integration of the media system. Alongside the affirmation of the graphic novel, which allows the comics to converge towards organic narrative arcs assumed from the literary novel, tendencies to boost the short genres of classic comics are outlined: the humorous strip, the fulminating cartoon, the self-contained comic board. The dizzying increase in the flows developed by the web favours the transposition, recirculation, stratification of such comics splinters, between analogue communication and digital communication. These are proposals that arise from the grassroots, from protagonists of social media creative participation or from renovators of underground culture. The interweaving of institutional aesthetic interaction and self-managed mediacy, while bound to the oligopoly of the platforms, opens up original opportunities for differentiation and enrichment of the comics experience
