Ricœur evokes continuously the extraordinary resources offered by fiction to catch the subtle variants between the time of conscious and the chronological time, and finds the limits of history: compared to historical narrative, – writes Ricœur - fiction narrative is richer in information on time, because of its powers of composition
Emerging Vectors of Narratology: Toward Consolidation or Diversification? (A Response)
This is a response to the questions asked by Franco Passalacqua and Federico Pianzola as a follow-up of the 2013 ENN conference. The discussions that originated at the conference were rich and thought-provoking and so the editors of this special section of «Enthymema» decided to continue the dialogue about the state of the art and the future of narratology

There is a particular space-time combination in which poetry is meant to find its perfect place, its perfect happening: it’s the meridian moment, the midday spent in a locus amoenus singing and playing along with fellow-poets. It seems to be what Bachtin defines as a cronotope. Anyway, in lyric poetry this time-space reveals itself to be more and more a foundational ideal. In the bucolic world a man has to renounce personal experience, because it is a place full of (re-told) stories but without Story. Lyric poetry, instead, needs existential experience. Even bucolic love is not suffered by the subject as much as elegiac love, it does not possess the same degree of reality. The bucolic midday could be desired and invoked as a utopia of eternal harmony, but it cannot be real in a lyric text. Even when the (young) subject finds himself in the middle of such locus amoenus – as Freud shows in his story – he has to reject the full situational enjoyment and think that behind all that vital splendour there is always the constant menace of time and death. The subject defines himself in the desiring position and he is too attracted and tied to the object to abandon it and turn his mind toward abstraction as a true philosopher would (platonically) do. Finally, the investigation of the topos will lead to a reconsideration of Lacan’s idea of artistic creativity as a sublimation
“…and you could hear the whole village chattering” I Malavoglia as figuralized novel
The essay explains Giovanni Verga’s Malavoglia according to the narrative theory of Franz Karl Stanzel, arguing that the novel provides an example of the figural narrative situation. The figuralization (or reflectorization) of Malavoglia is achieved mainly by the so-called (the definition is Ann Banfield’s ) non-reflective consciousness, that is, by the perceptive interplay of characters, independent of the intervention of an actual narrator. Such a methodological point of view implies a revision of some typological features of modernist novel, which has been too often interpreted only through texts of the “northern” Flaubert-James-Joyce-Woolf line

The present essay aims to connect Ricœur’s notion of narrative identity – developed between the 1980s and 1990s – with the nouveau roman theorized by Alain Robbe-Grillet in writings published between 1956 and 1963 and then collected in Pour un noveau roman. In the first part, the essay will summarize Ricœur’s Aristotelian –apocalyptic narratology model in the light of a comparison with the work of Frank Kermode. In the second part, noveau roman’s ontic realism will be presented. Finally, in the third part, starting with a comparison with the world of computer games, the essay will trace the effect of the overlapping of noveau roman with narrative identity both on the level of description and prescription.
Ricœur is not usually considered relevant in the field of figurative arts. However, the notion of imagination constitutes a crucial thread which is possible to detect in his production. This thread can supply significant hints not just for aesthetical thought, but also for interpretations of Ricœur’s thought. This emerges clearly in connection with studies on metaphor, where a particular position by Ricœur surfaces on the philosophy of images which steer clear from psychological interpretations. The French philosopher’s new interpretations connecting metaphorizing and creative imagination, allow not only to connect this issue with Ricœur’s other positions on art, but also offers some significant hints concerning the relationship with the social other – in the interweaving of ideology and utopia – and with the absolute other of religious transcendence.
Starting from the practice of writing and its actual alphabetical status, this essays aims to reassess the theory of language according to the experience of psychoanalysis. Translation, psychical activity par excellence in Freudian terms, allows an original investigation of the practice of writing, of the significance of alphabet, and of the meanings of logos. This contribution will primarily refer to the heritage of Jewish culture and, in particular, to the notion of ‘wisdom’, following a pattern that stems from the antique prophets and touches upon Kabbalists and not-orthodox and not-religious cultures, such as the Yiddish and the Chassidic ones. The result will be a an extremely complex theory of language in comparison with the Western tradition of linguistics stemming from De Saussure’s contribution. The notion of ‘wisdom’ in Jewish tradition enables to theoretically clarify the difference between ‘real’ and ‘reality’. Such theoretical elucidation would remain unattainable through the channel of Greek culture only, as the term phýsis exclusively allows an exploration of the territory of ‘real’. Considering together the Jewish antique and classical culture one can argue that, for human beings, real is without language while reality is language only
