ABSTRACT The effect of activation temperature and duration on the activity of petroleum coke has been investigated. A mixture of green coke and KOH (1:1) was heated in an oven furnace at 450°C for 1 h, then continued to activation process at 450-900°C for 1-3 h. The product mixture was immersed in a solution of 10% H2SO4 before being washed with deionized water to neutral pH. After being dried, activated cokes were tested with a solution of phenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol or methylen blue. Experimental data showed that the activity of coke imcreased with temperature and time. The effective condition of the activation process is at temperatures higher than 750°C and activation time of longer than 1,5 h. Adsorptive behavior of phenolics dan metylene blue onto activated coke agreed with Langmuir rather than with Freundlich isotherm.  Keywords: temperature effect, activation time, petroleum coke, adsorption capacity, phenolics, methylen blue.Â

ABSTRACT Several local bacteria have been isolated from glyphosate-contaminated soils at various locations throughout Malaysia. Quantitative monitoring of acrylamide degradation was performed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) whilst bacterial growth was carried out by plate counting. The isolate was tentatively identified as Burkholderia sp. strain DR.Y27 based on carbon utilization profiles using Biolog GN plates and partial 16s rDNA molecular phylogeny. Highest growth was obtained at acrylamide concentrations of between 100 to 2000 mg L-1.  Complete degradation of 850 mg L-1 of acrylamide occurs after ten days of incubation with concomitant cell growth. The isolate grew optimally in between pH 6.0 and 8.0. The effect of incubation temperature on the growth of this isolate shows an optimum growth at 30°C. Glucose, lactose, maltose, fructose, mannitol, citric acid and sucrose at an initial concentration of 1.0% (w/v) supported growth with glucose being the best carbon source. Aliphatic amides such as 2-chloroacetamide, methacrylamide, nicotinamide, acrylamide, acetamide, propionamide and urea supported growth with increasing assimilative capability from 2-chloroacetamide to urea. The characteristics of this isolate suggest that it would be useful in the bioremediation of acrylamide.  Keywords:  isolation, characterization, acrylamide-degrading, Bacteriu

ABSTRACT Poly (D,L-lactide acid) has been used as scaffold for tissue engineering. In this study, PDLLA microparticles were made into porous microparticles. Porous microparticles were proposed to reduce burst release of protein and to prevent diffusion of released protein into non-target tissue. Formulation of porous microparticles was made by water-oil-water (W1/O/W2) emulsification-solvent evaporation using gas foamed as porogen. Variations of the amount of sodium bicarbonate, volume of citric acid solution and time for homogenization were optimized to produce optimum formulation. Evaluation for this microparticles included morphology of particles, particle size distribution and porosity. Porous microparticle produced by ratio volume of acid : dichloromethane : poly(vynil alcohol) (PVA) = 1:3:3 and the ratio of  sodium bicarbonate : PDLLA = 2:3 was the optimum formulation.  Keywords :Porous Microparticles, PDLLA,Gas Foamed, Scaffold, Solvent EvaporationÂ

ABSTRACTMesoporous silica has attracted rapidly growing attention in catalysis. In this work, mesoporoussilica was synthesized by using CTAB surfactant and then modified by AlCl3. Such materialwas used as support for Cu(II)--acetonitile complex and applied in transesterification of fryingoil. The XRD pattern of the obtained silica confirms the availability of chracteristic peak onsilica surface while its TEM exhibits the uniformity of nanochannel of the mesoporous silica. The particle size of silica support has become smaller after grafting process showed by SEMimages. FT-IR spectra of the materials indicated that the Cu(II) grafted on the mesoporoussilica was in the form of its acetonitrile complex. Supprisingly, the Cu loading the graftedcatalyst was found to be very high. That was 21%, when the catalyst applied ontransesterification of the examined frying oil the amount of total methyl ester yielded were of65%.Keywords: mesoporous silica, AlCl3, Cu(II)-acetonitrile complex, transesterificatio

ABSTRACT The utilization of natural zeolite as supporting media of α-amylase enzyme has been done. Natural zeolite which is activated with 3M HCl can remove impurities in the surface natural zeolite, uncover and widen the pores of the zeolite and activate functional groups to interact with α-amylase enzyme in the process of immobilization enzyme process. The mass of activated natural zeolite which is used as a material immobilized to get the optimal activity of α-amylase enzyme was 0.3 gram. Based on the measurement result of optimization of α-amylase enzyme were obtained optimum temperature of 35 oC, pH 5.6 and incubation time of 35 minutes with 0.04845 units/mL of the unit activity. And for α-amylase immobilized enzyme will be stable at the optimum temperature of 50 oC, pH 5.6 and incubation time of 45 minutes with 0.030 units/mL of the unit activity. SEM-EDX pattern shows the differences in surface morphology between natural zeolite and activated natural zeolites which contain α-amylase enzyme. A mobilization technique can increase the stability utilized in a α-amylase enzyme. Keywords : Zeolite, amobilization, α-amylase enzym

Indonesia is one of huge paddy producing countries so that it also produces rice husk in a great number. Rice husks contain high silica. Which is good in silica compounds synthesis such as Wollastonit (CaSiO3). Nowadays Wollastonit has attracted great intension doe to its ability to increase mechanical properties of a material. In this work, rice husk was taken from Sariak Laweh, Lima Puluh Kota district and CaO was taken from Halaban, in the same district. Analysis with XRF show that SiO2 and CaO content of both samples were high enough, 97% and 98% which indicated their good potential as silica and calcium source in to synthesize of Wollastonit. Characterization XRD and SEM were found that the Wollastonit obtained which rice husks gave good result
