This article aims to show that through the strengthening of local wisdom, apathy toward the existence of other groups can be avoided to form a better order of life. Concern about the condition of the Indonesian people that are considered to have less appreciation for the other groups, in particular against certain religious groups has triggered the author to explore these issues and to respond to the concern. This nation, in fact, has a mechanism which has proved capable of reducing and even quelling the potential of conflict in a multi-cultural society. It is often called local mechanism. Although it has local characteristics, but if taken to a higher level, then the mechanism will generate new institutions for creating a broader harmony. This brief article showed that the existing local wisdom could create a harmonious relationship among the Bugis community though they have different faith. This is part of their commitment to practicing the noble values of local wisdom so that differences of identity (religion) are not a deterrent in building good relations, but in deed serve as a medium that acts as a reinforcement to the existing order. Local Islam which is synonymous with the implementation of rituals is always interesting to discuss, either through free discussion or in the academic sphere, which will map out the speakers at both confronting and accommodating areas. Similarly, the Parcuku religious ritual of the Fak-Fak community gave rise to a wide range of supporting and opposing arguments for various reasons respectively. This paper provides a description of cultural activities of the Fak-fak people, which is closely related to the religion of Islam, in the face of the reality of the society which tends to be misunderstood by outsiders, or by Fak-fak people who have gained a new awareness in terms of religious (Islamic) teachings. The results of this research indicate that the Parcuku ritual, practiced by the community of Fak-fak, is a semi-religious ceremony with the main purpose of attempting to find a way of salvation for the people. Nevertheless, through the Parcuku ritual, a variety of positive things could be fostered in society such as cooperation, mutual help, and various other constructive social values that can be used in the realization of a harmonious society. Also, through a variety of ritual activities, we can be witness the characteristics of a community in its religious expression, and therefore it should not be a justification for blasphemies because it turns out that God is so great that He has a lot of names in the human mind. The next most important thing is that it appears there is only one God in the many religions on Earth. Keywords: Parcuku, religion, ritual, community, Fak-fa

This article is based on a fundamental question, what is the relationship between practicing the Muludan tradition and seeking of power by the Royal family of the Kanoman Sultanate in Cirebon? The Muludan is a tradition conducted by the Royal family, and thousands of people participate in this tradition. This article is aimed to analyze the extent of which the Royal family uses Muludan tradition to regain their political power as they had in the past. Our participatory research shows that the Muludan tradition could be defined as a religious-cultural system. This is not only a religious ritual but also a cultural tradition. On the one hand this tradition is done primarily based on the knowledge, beliefs, norms and moral values of religious teachings. People participating in this tradition believe that they would gain God blessing (Ngalap Berkah) and Shafa’at as cited by the Quran and the Hadith. On the other hand, this tradition involves cultural tradition that has been practiced by the local people since long time ago. This research also found that the Royal family fails to use this tradition to gain political power as they intend to do. This tradition could mainly effectively be implemented in terms of the socio-cultural relationship between the Sultan and the followers. Political power, the Royal family aims to gain through conducting the Muludan tradition, does not significantly happen. Key words: The Muludan Tradition, Power Relationship, Religious Identity, and the Kanoman Sultanat

ARGUING THE JUST WAR IN ISLAM

One of the magnitude effect of the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States and the subsequent war against terror campaign is a political rhetoric that divides the international world into two rigid poles,” the evil terrorist” in one side and the “righteous, just enlightened victim” in the other. The United States administration has succeeded in placing itself as the protagonist side and its rally for retaliatory war campaign has not only gained international support but also affirmed its position as the leader of the ‘the key-holder of freedom, liberty and humanity’, who waged war against the barbaric evil terrorists. By calling ‘either with us or against us’, the US leaves no room for the rests of the world to be in ‘grey’ area. Those who are not in favor will be considered as enemy and therefore deserve to be punished
