Intelektual Muslim Baru yang Menetas Semasa Orde Baru

    No full text
The main thesis of this book is that during the New Order era, a unique and distinct Islamic intellectual movement emerged, known as Neo-Modernism. Nurcholish Madjid, Djohan Effendi, the late Ah. Mad Wahib, and Abdurrahman Wahid are four figures of this Neo-Modernist movement. The hallmark of their intellectual movement lies in their mastery of classical/traditional Islamic knowledge (commonly referred to as "kitab kuning") combined with modern knowledge. The characteristic of integrating these two forms of knowledge did not emerge in the period from pre-independence until the 1970s. In the past, those educated in modern sciences lacked mastery of Islamic teachings, while those well-versed in Islamic sciences were not adaptive to modern knowledge. This situation consequently gave rise to two popular typologies: the first group known as Modernists (represented by Masyumi, Muhammadiyah, and Western-educated Muslim scholars), while the second group is referred to as Traditionalists (represented by NU and students lacking Western education). Even among intellectuals of the past who possessed both aspects, they were very few in number. The late Harun Nasution, Mukti Ali, and Mohammad Natsir were among those few

The methods used in a study significantly determine the results and quality of that study. The better and more appropriate the methods used, the more optimal the quality and results of our research. This writing will discuss four points related to the methodology of philosophical studies in general, and Islamic philosophy in particular. First, it relates to the method of understanding a text, or what is commonly known as the hermeneutic method. Second, it concerns understanding a philosophical idea not as a final product but as a process. Third, it pertains to curriculum development that includes lesser-known but very important figures as links in the development of philosophical ideas, or what is commonly referred to as minor philosophers and also Muslim scientists. Fourth, it relates to the method of analysis or presentation from descriptive to critical methods

    No full text
This study presents one of the stories in the Qur\u27an, namely about the figure of Dhul-Qarnayn. This figure is interesting to discuss because his existence is often associated with various famous figures in human history. The mufassirun have diverse opinions regarding the true identity of Dhul-Qarnayn. Additionally, there is the notion that the story about him might merely be symbolic, meaning that this figure never definitively existed in history. This research aims to address these issues through thorough analysis and exploration of related verses, interpretations by scholars, and argumentative comments from intellectuals. The results of this study are expected to provide a deeper understanding of the story of Dhul-Qarnayn in the Qur\u27an

Ibn ‘Arabi dan Paham Wahdat al-Wujud

    No full text
Waḥdat al-wujūd means: the Unity of Being, meaning that there is only one existence, which is the existence of Allah. The plural forms observed in the world are illusions that dominate the limitations of the intellect. This concept was born in Spain (Andalusia) or the western Islamic region, and then spread to the eastern Islamic regions. Its notable figure is Muḥy al-Dīn Ibn ‘Arabī. From this concept of waḥdat al-wujūd arose the idea of the perfect human (insan kamil). This idea can be found in Fushush al-Ḥikām and Futuḥat al-Makkiyah

Broadly speaking, the book by Nicolas Jonathan Woly, derived from his doctoral dissertation, discusses the diverse opinions on interfaith relations from Islamic and Christian scholars and theologians in the 20th century. Woly does not seem to want to stop at such a typical discussion; rather, he also wants to specifically examine how such interreligious relationships influence the understanding of Christians and the church in their missiological tasks. Or, as he put it, "…The Church and Christians will listen and perhaps also learn from other religious communities in matters of its mission." In this regard, Woly explicitly states that Christians and the church should also receive input from their historical experiences of encountering people of other faiths

    No full text
This study critically examines the concept of the Islamic paradigm proposed by Kuntowijoyo, a prominent Indonesian scholar and cultural figure. Kuntowijoyo introduced the Islamic paradigm as an alternative approach to understanding and practicing Islam in the contemporary era, focusing on transformative thinking and social reconstruction. This study highlights the key elements of this paradigm, such as the concepts of historicism, prophetic ethics, and humanization, as well as their implications for Islamic thought and practice in Indonesia. Using textual analysis and a hermeneutic approach, this research evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of Kuntowijoyo\u27s Islamic paradigm, including its relevance in addressing the challenges of modernity and globalization. The findings of this review are expected to contribute to the development of a more dynamic and contextual Islamic discourse in the future
