DOMINANT FACTORS AFFECTING SEDIMENT OXYGEN CONSUMPTION LEVEL IN INTENSIVE WHITE SHRIMP (Litopenaeus vannamei) POND
Sediment oxygen consumption level is an indicator of mineralization procces intensity and indicator of microorganism activity in the substrate, and also a description of dissolved oxygen consumption or utilization in a water body. This study aimed to evaluate factors of sediment quality which influenced sediment oxygen consumption level. The study was conducted at the experimental pond installation of Research Institute for Coastal Aquaculture (RICA), in Punaga, Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, using two units of 4000m2 intensive ponds with density of 50ind./m2. Rearing period was approxi-mately in 4months. Pond management was carried out in accordance with standard operating pro-cedures. Homogeneity between experimental units was approached by the uniformity of pond management including pond preparation, shrimp seed management, feed management,and water management. Sediment quality variables measured were redox potential, pH, total organic matter, sediment oxygen consumption, total bacteria, and production aspect. The results showed that the factors which have close relationship with the sediment oxygen consumption were redox potential, organic matter, and total bacteria. The model could be used to predict the sediment oxygen con-sumption on white shrimp pond with the following regression equation Y= 0.0000496 + 0.00025 organic matter + 0.00037 total bacteria - 0.00000948 potential redox with R2 = 0.847.Keywords: sediment oxygen consumption, sediment quality, pond, Litopenaeus vanname
SUSTAINABILITY FADs MANAGEMENT ON ECONOMIC DIMENSION IN THE KEI ISLANDS SOUTHEAST MALUKU REGENCY
Fish aggregating devise (FAD) based fisheries have become a dominant economic support (about 90%) of the community of the Kei Islands in Southeast Maluku Regency. However, it will not last long if the fisheries is not well managed and financially balanced. This study aimed to analyze the attributes of sustainable FADs-based. fisheries and to assess the financial feasibility for an investment. The method used was the analysis of FADs investment, the consumption and income of the fishermen’s households of mini purse seine and FADs, contribution to the local revenues, and the growth of fishing supporting business. The analyses results showed that the investment for a FADs was of Rp. 13,714,000, mini purse seine of Rp. 426,875,000, handline of Rp. 71,75 million, and troll lines of Rp. 72,75 million, household consumption of Rp. 13,625,730. The income of FAD fisherman was of Rp. 164,143,125, mini purse seine fisherman of Rp. 164,143,125, and entrepreneur of Rp. 328,286,250. SEASONAL VARIABILITY OF LIGHT ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT OF SURFACE WATER
Absorption coefficient measurement can be used in estimating water quality, optical characteristic of water column, and marine bio-optical models. The purposes of this research were to determine values and variability of sea surface absorption coefficient in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico (NEGOM) based on various seasons. The data were collected in spring, summer, and fall seasons in 1999-2000 with AC-9 instrument. The spatial distribution of absorption coefficient showed that relatively high values were generally found along the run off Missisippi, Mobile, Chochawati, Escambia, Apalachicola, and Suwannee rivers, as well as Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, relatively low values were found in offshore region. This pattern followed the distribution pattern of chlorophyll and CDOM. Based on the local region comparison of spectral average value of absorption coefficient, we found a significant difference (α = 95%) among regions with the highest value in the run off of the Mississippi and Mobile rivers, and the lowest value in the offshore region. Comparison of spectral average value of absorption coefficient among seasons at the three primary wavelengths (blue=440 nm, green=510 nm, and red=676 nm) also showed a significant difference (α = 95%) with the highest value during the summer 1999 (Su-99) and the lowest value during the spring of 2000 (Sp-00). Absorption coefficient values were influenced by oceanographic factors that varied in every season such as wind, surface currents, upwelling, the location and speed of the Loop Current, and the river discharge of fresh water into the NEGOM.Keywords: absorption coefficient, seasons, chlorophyll, CDOM, northeastern Gulf of Mexic
DEVELOPMENT OF DIGESTIVE ENZYMES ACTIVITY ON BLACK SADDLED CORAL GROUPER (Plectropomus laevis) LARVAE
ABSTRACTProtease, amylase, and lipase enzymes were used as biological indicators to measure larvae’s food digestion. The aim of this study was to describe digestive enzyme activity development of black saddled coral grouper (Plectropomus laevis) larvae. The just hatching larvae were reared in concrete tank 2x3x1 m3 with stocking density of 10 larvae/L. In the larval rearing media were added with Nanochloropsis oculata at 105 cel/ml started from 1 day old (D-1). The larvae was fed with rotifer (Brachionus rotundiformis) at 10-20 ind/ml started from D-2 and artificial diet from D-10. To analyze the protease, amylase, and lipase enzymes activities, samples were taken 0.5-1 g or about 1000 larvae on D-3, D-4, D-6, D-8 and 500 larvae on D-10, D-12, D-16, and D-20. The result showed that the protease, amylase, and lipase enzymes activity were positively correlated with the growth. Digestive enzymes activity was increased when larvae started on endogenous feeding (D-3), become down on D-6, stable on D-8 to D-10, increased on D-12, and reached the highest level on D-16. Digestive enzymes activity was higher when larvae started feeding with artificial diet compared to the larvae before feeding with artificial diet. REEF FISHES BIODIVERSITY IN MARINE SANCTUARY AT MINAHASA UTARA DISTRICT, NORTH SULAWESI
ABSTRACTThere are some marine sanctuaries (DPL) which are managed together by its societies in North Minahasa regency. From 19 villages with DPL, we conducted surveys using point intercept transect in 14 villages both inside and outside DPL in the subdistrict West Likupang and East Likupang, North Minahasa. Result showed that live coral cover was in general in moderate to excellent conditions both inside and outside DPL. Reef fish recorded in the study areas consisted of 267 reef fish species which categorized into 40 families. Bahoi village had the highest abundance and biomass within the DPL due to a very good condition of coral reef ecosystemn (>75% coral cover) both inside and outside DPL. Biomass of reef fish outside DPL of Bahoi was small but its abundance was the highest. This conditions indicated that the size of reef fish outside of Bahoi DPL was small and this gave a positive perspective to supply fishes into the outside region of Bahoi DPL. Overall, marine sanctuary in North Minahasa contained reef fish community structure in good condition, moderate diversity, relatively labile of evenness index, and low dominance. Grouping by similarity, reef fish species were generally similar in all locations. The separation of DPL locations produced some different fishes group due to its different location, oceanographic conditions, and characters. BIOACCUMULATION OF ORGANOCHLORINES PESTICIDES (OCP) COMPOUND IN GREEN MUSSELLS (Perna viridis) IN JAKARTA BAY
ABSTRACTThe green mussel, Perna viridis can be used to determine bioaccumulation levels of organochlorine pesticides in a marine environment. Measurements on pesticide organochlorine concentration in green mussels (Perna viridis) were conducted in March and May 2013. The purpose of this research was to determine the bioaccumulation level of organochlorine pesticides in green mussels which were cultivated in Jakarta Bay. The samples were collected in Jakarta Bay in March and May 2013. The organochlorine pesticides concentration were measured by gas chromatography HP 5890 series II. The results showed that the average concentration of organochlorine pesticides in the small size of green mussells was 12.842 ppb, in the medium size was 27.065 ppb, and in the big size was 108.646 ppb. These concentrations were still lower than safety threshold limit value for seafood stated by EPA (Environment Protection Agency) i.e., 1,500 ppb. The comparation between organochlorine pesticide concentration in seawater and organochlorine pesticide in green mussels (bioaccumulation factor) were 2,140 for small green mussel, 4,510 for medium green mussel, and 18,107 for big green mussels, respectively.Keywords: bioaccumulation, green musselss, organochlorine pesticide, Jakarta Ba
TOTAL HEMOCYTES, GLUCOSE HEMOLYMPH, AND PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE OF SPINY LOBSTER Panulirus homarus CULTURED IN THE INDIVIDUAL COMPARTMENTS SYSTEM
Cannibalism can cause high mortality in a lobster culture. To prevent cannibalism, an artificial shel-ter is needed like the individual compartments system (ICS) to ensure that there is no contact bet-ween lobsters. This study aimed to evaluate the application of ICS on total hemocytes glucose hemo-lymph, production performance, and determine the shape of more effective ICS to minimize stress level of lobster. The treatments used for various application shape of ICS was tubular ICS, triangle ICS, square ICS, and shelter PVC pipes as control. Lobster maintenance was conducted in outdoor for 60 days. The results indicated that physiological responses with square ICS treatment were more effective to reduce stress level compared with other treatments (p<0.05). Application of ICS was more optimal to improved SR (p<0.05) and growth of lobster (p>0.05). Overall, treatment of square ICS was opti-mal related to production performance i.e. SR 88.89±5.24%, SGR 0.61±0.49%/day, with harvest size of total length 137.31±8.11 mm/ind, weight 58.83±4.78 g/ind, and FCR 22.71±1.72. Application of ICS in lobster culture was effective to reduce stress level as indicated from total hemocytes and gluco-se hemolymph, and support optimal production performance. OCEANOGRAPHY AND WATER QUALITY CONDITION IN SEVERAL WATERS OF THOUSAND ISLANDS AND ITS SUITABILITY FOR WHITE SHRIMP Litopenaeus vannamei CULTURE
The purposes of this study were to determine oceanographic and water quality parameters and their suitability for white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei culture. The measurements were carried out on dry season in Semak Daun Island, Karya Island, and Panggang Island waters of Thousand Islands, with areas of 315.0, 12.0, and 102.8 ha, water depth average of 4.6 m (0.5-28.1 m), 14.6 m (0.5-26.7 m), and 5.3 m (0.8-13.6 m), mean current water velocity of 12.9, 12.7, and 13.5 cm/second, respectively. In the study areas, we found a diurnal tidal pattern with high wave in January and July-August. Based on temperature, salinity, and water density in Semak Daun Island waters, there seemingly occurred a turn over indicating a good water circulation, while in Panggang Island and Karya Island waters tended to have a stratification. Generaly, water qualities in the study areas were in the op-timum range for white shrimp culture, i.e., temperature of 29.6-30.8oC, turbidity of 0.10-1.05 NTU, transparency of 5.8-9.7 m, total suspended solid of <8 mg/L, total dissolved solid of 20-164 mg/L, pH of 6.89-7.22, salinity of 32.2-32.3, dissolved oxygen of 5.8-10.8 mg/L, ammonia of 0.068-0.145 mg/L, nitrate 1.247-2.589 mg/L, and phosphate of 1.021-2.352 mg/L. Moreover, in Semak Daun Island wa-ters, we found the highest suitability for white shrimp culture due to its better water circulation.Keywords: mariculture, coral reef waters, strait, water current, turnover, stratification
SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF PLANKTONIC DINOFLAGELLATE IN MAKASSAR WATERS, SOUTH SULAWESI
The objectives of this study were to determine the harmful species of dinoflagellates, to determine the concentration of nutriens in surface waters, and to analyze factors affecting the ecological aspects of the harmful dinoflagellates. The results showed that there were 7 genus of dinoflagellates found in this study i.e., Ceratium spp., Gymnodinium sp., Dinophysis sp., Gonyaulax sp., Noctiluca sp., Protoperi-dinium spp., and Peridinium sp. Protoperidinium spp. and Ceratium spp. were the predominant species, with their abundance ranged of 9-659 cells/L and 6-556 cells/L, respectively. In temporal scale, values of DO and water light penetration were not significantly different (α>0.05), while for the parameter of nutriens, salinity, and abundance were significantly different (α<0.05). Total abundance of dinoflagellates was significantly correlated with nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, salinity, and DO. Harmful dinoflagellate species such as Dinophysis sp. (DSP), Gymnodinium spp. (NSP and PSP), Noctiluca sp. (anaerobic), and Gonyaulax sp. (anaerobic) were observed in the study area. The high concentration of ammonia (>1 mg/L) in the waters of Losari beach also indicated that the area was affected by anthropogenic activities. Minimizing nutrient inputs from the land was becoming the most priority measure to be done to avoid such effects related to dinoflagellate harmful algae bloms.Keywords: anthropogenic, dinoflagellates, harmful species, Makassar, nutrients
CONCENTRATION HEAVY METALS (Cu AND Pb) IN MUSI RIVER ESTUARY
The Musi River is one of the biggest river of twelve big rivers in South Sumatra Province. Water quality of this river affects the water quality in the estuary and biological health in its surrounding so that it is important to determine the Cu and Pb concentrations. The purposes of this study were to analize distribution of heavy metals (Cu and Pb) and to determine the water quality status in March and September 2014. The water and sediment samples were collected from eight stations along the Musi River from downstream to the estuary. Heavy metal concentration was analized by employing USEPA 30050B method using AAS Spektra plus variant with air mixure flame – acetylene. Dissolved Cu and Pb concentrations in March were 0,002 - 0,006 mg/l and 0,002-0,003 mg/l, respectively, while in September were 0,001-0,010 mg/lfor Cu and 0,001-0,005 mg/lfor Pb. Cu and Pb concentrations in sediment detected in March were 6,92-16,4 mg/l and 1,9-11,4 mg/l, respectively, while in September were 2,3-13,9 mg/l for Cu and 4,29-9,95 mg/l for Pb. Student test analysis showed that was no significant differences between Pb and Cu concentrations (dissolved and sediment) between March and September. Generally, the concentration of heavy metals Cu and Pb in Musi River estuary were still below specified quality standards.Keywords: heavy metal, Cu, Pb, the Musi River, estuar
