    COHESIVE SEDIMENT TRANSPORT MODELING ON INNER AMBON BAY

    The presence of cohesive sediment in the water column can reduce light penetration and affect photosynthesis process, and it can be disrupted the primary productivity of aquatic, and sedimentation of coastal waters. The objective of this research was to determine the cohesive sediment distribution pattern and the relationship with sedimentation. MIKE 3 FM modeling was used to understand the process of sediment transport and sedimentation on Inner Ambon Bay. Sediment transport modeling method was divided into two stages: the hydrodynamic modeling (baroclinic) and sediment transport (mud transport) modeling. The model results indicate current patterns in the Inner Ambon Bay is influenced by the tidal factor. Suspended sediment dispersed vertically from the surface to a depth of 30 m with concentration of about 3.5-15 Kg/m3. The maximum consentration of the suspended sediment occurs at head of the bay (around Waiheru, Passo, and Lateri). Model simulations for 30 days showed the rate of erosion is about 1.04-6.15 Kg/m2/s, while in Inner Ambon Bay the erosion about 9.07x10-8Kg/m2/s only occurred in T1 station. Sedimentation associated with the cohesive sediment accumulation and it was shown by bed level. In addition, the simulation showed bed level in sill ranged at 0.01-0.19 cm and 0.47 mm/day on average, while in the Inner Ambon Bay it ranged from 1.75-10.01 cm, and the sedimentation rate was approximately 39.9 mm/day

    We investigated the sediment properties and distribution in Balohan Bay, which is located in southern Weh Island, Aceh Province. The aim of this research was to clarify the sediment distribution mechanism in the Balohan Bay using a statistical approach. Samples were collected on January 2016 using coring method. Sediment grain-size distribution from 14 stations was obtained using wet sieve analysis. A large amount of fine sand and very fine sand were found in Balohan Bay, as a result of several tributaries discharged in those areas. The sediment distribution in eastern stations showed an indication as a coarser size and a poorer sorted area, as they were adjacent to the steep cliff

    ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF MACROALGA Gracilaria sp. IN BATCH SYSTEM TO PRODUCE BIO-METHANE

    This study aimed to determine the potential of bio-methane produced by Gracilaria sp. in a batch system. The experiment was conducted in batch system and it was initiated by acclimatization process (12 days) and ended methane production process (30 days). The results showed that biochemical properties of Gracilaria sp.  are carbohydrate 65.46 ± 0.58%, lignin 13.20 ± 2.23%, TOC (Total Organic Carbon) 33.39 ± 0.23%, Nitrogen 1.12 ± 0.01%, and C/N ratio 29.82. Acclimatization proceeded successfully and it was indicated by 62.7 L biogas of 4.025 L of substrate Gracilaria sp. produced within a pH range of 6.2 - 7.1. The batch method of anaerobic biodegradation showed that 4 kg of Gracilaria sp. can produced 131.1 L of biogas containing methane and 46.7 L or 11.6 L CH4 /kg

    Horseshoe crab, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda is frequently found in the coastal zone of Bintan Bay of Riau Islands Province. The study was conducted from August to September 2016 in coastal area of Kampung Gisi, Bintan bay. The aims of the study were to analyse the population structure and morphometric characters of horseshoe crab and its relation to the coastal environmental characteristics. Sampling of horseshoe crab was taken using belt transect method, and coastal environmental parameters were measured in-situ. The results show that b values of length-weight relationship were found to be 3.3 (male) and 2.6 (female) respectively. Furthermore, the growth pattern of males were positive allometric, and females were negative allometric.     EVALUATION OF THE USE OF FAAS FOR SR/CA CONCENTRATION ANALYSIS OF PORITES FROM AMBON BAY AND JUKUNG ISLAND CORAL

    The ratio of Sr/Ca concentration in coral is usually used as paleothermometer. Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) is an instrument, which is often used to analyze Sr/Ca concentration in Porites sp. The method is very sensitive and requires small amount of sample. However, the availability of this instrument is very limited. To deal with it, Flame Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer (FAAS) is an alternative in order to analyze the concentration of various elements include Sr and Ca. The aim of this study was to evaluate the result of the analysis methods of strontium and calcium concentration in coral using FAAS and compared to ICP results. Sample of Porites coral was taken from Ambon Bay and Jukung Island. The strontium and calcium concentration were analyzed using Flame Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer (FAAS). The results showed that the average of ratio Sr/Ca in coral from Ambon Bay and Jukung Island were 8.71 and 7.708 mmol/mol. The monthly variation of  ratio Sr/Ca in coral from Ambon Bay were 6.28 - 10.24 mmol/mol, while in coral from Jukung Island were  1.005 - 10.914 mmol/mol. Result of  FAAS analysis was too broad in range compared to ICP, ie 8.462 - 8.807 dan 8.45 – 8.7 mmol/mol.     MANAGEMENT OF MANGROVE ECOSYSTEM POTENCY IN KUALA LANGSA, ACEH

    The potency of mangrove ecosystems can be a provider of economic resources, preserving the ecological environment and providing environmental services. The existence of mangroves in Kuala Langsa is important to study about the economic potential, the potential of carbon sequestration in the form of biomass, coastal tourism potential and social potential of society in support of its development efforts. The result of the research shows that the potential existence of mangrove ecosystem to fishery sector is Rp. 657.563.000 / year, carbon sequestration potential in the form of biomass of 180.365 ton /year, with the economic value of carbon trade of Rp. 2.344.745.000/year, economic potential of coastal tourism reached Rp 22,921,107,253/year. Overall, the estimated total potential of existing mangrove ecosystems in Kuala Langsa is Rp. 29.923.415.253/year. To manage these potentials, a conservation strategy is required, performance improvement of customary institutions and the existence of such management institutions must be continuously strengthened.                                                                                                   Keywords:  institutional, Kuala Langsa, mangrove, potency, strategic                        management

    ANALISYS AND MAPPING OF ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY INDEX IN BANGGAI REGENCY AND BANGGAI ISLANDS REGENCY, CENTRAL SULAWESI

    The Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) is a description of the biological, socio-economic and socio-cultural values of a particular coastal and marine area used as a priority response to oil spills, shown on a map by applying spatial analysis using geographic information system technology. The purpose of this research was to analyse mangrove ecosystem area in Banggai and Banggai Islands Regency based on its vulnerability value by analyzing mangrove community structure and socio-economic services for local community. The research was conducted in nine sub-districts, among others: South Batui, Batui, East Luwuk, Lamala, Masama, Balantak, Bualemo (Banggai) and Bulagi and Buko (Banggai Islands). The study was conducted from August to November 2016, with field observations, direct interviews with communities and local government and literature review. The results of spatial analysis of ESI in the coastal areas of Banggai and Banggai Islands are obtained from sensitivity values of medium and sensitive. Areas with moderate sensitivity are Batui, East Luwuk, Masama, Lamala, Balantak and Bualemo sub-districts with grades of 16,78 – 24,35.     HEAVY METAL Pb CONTENT IN THE SEAWATER, SEDIMENT AND GREEN MUSSEL TISSUE Perna viridis

    Accumulation of heavy metal Pb into the tissue can proceed through a food chain or environmental exposure. This study was to determine the content of heavy metals Pb in water, sediments and mussels (perna viridis). This research was conducted in March 2016, in the waters of Lekok Pasuruan at the three stations. TPI Station 1, Station 2 at the mouth of the Rejoso river and station 3 nearby PLTU 3. The water, sediments and green mussels (Perna viridis) samples were collected for Pb analysis using Absorpotion Atomic Spectrophotometer (AAS). In addition to the water quality such as salinity, temperature, DO and pH was observed. The results showed the highest Pb content in the water (0.4444 mg/l), sediment (23.8284 mg/kg) and green mussel tissue (1.5098 mg/kg) were found at station 2 (Rejoso river mouth).     SUITABILITY OF CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM CONDITION BASED ON LOCAL ECOLOGY KNOWLEDGE WITH SURVEY METHOD IN EAST COAST OF WEH ISLAND

    Local ecological knowledge (LEK) refers to the knowledge of people in a local community that can be used in assessing environmental conditions as well as reflecting the interaction that occur in an ecosystem. The purpose of this study was to examine condition of coral reef ecosystem based on the LEK’s community in a marine protected area east coast weh island (KKPD PTPW) Sabang. Assessment of the coral reef condition based on the local’s ecological knowledge is justified from the suitability of the area by comparing map of the coral reefs condition based on LEK and observation map of the coral reefs condition during the study. Based on LEK, it is known that in the PTPW Sabang region coral reefs which falls under deteriorated class is found in the northern sea of Kelurahan Kota Atas, while those which falls under good condition class are found in Ie Meule and Ujung Kareng as well as in Anoi Itam except Benteng. Result from the observations done in 13 stations found that sea region near Sumur Tiga, Ujung Kareung and Benteng have a good coral reefs with a coverage range of 51-65 %. While the sea in Ujung Seuke, Anoi Itam and Reuteuk have a moderate coral reefs with a percentage of coverage ranging from 44- 49. Respondents’ perceptions of the coral reef condition during the last 10 years which include 55% respondents in Ie Meule and 74.29% of respondend in Anoi Itam stated that there is an increment of coral reefs coverage

    COMPOSITION AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF MARINE SPONGES FROM DIFFERENT SEAGRASS ECOSYSTEMS IN KEPULAUAN SERIBU WATERS, JAKARTA

    A seagrass ecosystem has high productivity that supports many species of associated invertebrates, including sponges. However, seagrass beds with different habitat condition, including seagrass species composition and architectural morphotypes could affect the associative sponge in the ecosystem.   This study is aimed to find out about sponge species composition in different seagrass beds. The observation was conducted in two seagrass ecosystems at the east (site 1) and at the southeast (site 2) of Pramuka Island, Kepulauan Seribu, near Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. The Belt Transect was used to assess the density of sponges on the seagrass ecosystem, which was placed parallel to the coastline. The sponges species has higher number at the east than the southeast, with both sites was dominated by Spirastrella sp. and Agelas conifera. Correspondence Analysis (CA) results showed that sponges community has close interaction with seagrass abundance especially Cymodocea rotundata and Enhalus acoroides and architectural characteristic (patchily or continues meadows). Antibacterial assay of sponges tissue showed that only 7 sponge species has activity against targeting bacteria. The CA results also showed that sponge antibacterial activity was not correlated with seagrass species, with low bactericide and bacteriastatic activities. The implication of this result showed that sponges community can grow up at seagrass ecosystem eventhough their potential secondary metabolite activities is very low probably due to lack of stimulus mechanisms in the environment.
