Examining Positive Emotions on Student Engagement during COVID-19 Situation with Academic Psychological Capital as a Mediating Variable
Student engagement is an important aspect of an individual's school adaptation and adjustment to changes . Students who engage in learning will be more likely to succeed in their studies and get good performance. This study aimed to determine the effect of positive emotions on student engagement with academic psychological capital as a mediator. This study adopted a survey method in which 396 seventh grade students of nine junior high schools in Surabaya city participated in cluster random sampling and stratified random sampling was employed as recruitment strategies. The data collected were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares approach. Results indicate that academic psychological capital partially mediates the influence of positive emotions on student engagement. Partial mediation shows that positive emotions have a direct influence on students' engagement to the existence of academic psychological capital as a mediator
The Role of Social Skills on Bullying Behavior Tendency with Friendship Quality as Mediator
Social skills have been known to predict bullying tendencies in adolescence. However, knowledge about the mechanisms by which social skills are linked to bullying tendency remains limited. The present study investigated whether friendship quality would mediate the link. A sample of 204 adolescents (16-18 years old; 163 girls; 41 boys) studying in Yogyakarta state high schools completed an online self-report of Bullying Tendency Scale, Social Skills Scale, and Friendship Quality Scale. Mediation analysis was conducted using PROCESS macro. Results showed that friendship quality could not mediate social skills with bullying tendency therefore hypothesis of this study was denied. However, by including gender, it was found that friendship quality has a significant role as a mediator for boys. Higher social skills were associated with higher friendship quality, and then higher friendship quality was associated with higher bullying tendency. It can be concluded that social skills are important for boys and girls to exercise positive interaction with peers and to have high friendship quality. However, it is more important for boys to have high friendship quality with positive peers
Dynamic of Death Anxiety in People with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease that many individuals suffer from. Some GERD patients even develop death anxiety due to their health condition. This qualitative study aimed to explain the dynamic of death anxiety in people with GERD and used a phenomenological approach. The informants were three adult men who had been diagnosed with GERD for more than six months. The stages of data analysis included horizontalization, textural description, structural description, and phenomenon description. Meanwhile, the data validity techniques used were member checking and time triangulation. The three respondents displayed death anxiety aspects proposed by previous studies. Findings revealed that GERD patients who experienced death anxiety also experienced hypochondria symptoms and future doubts. Participants further reported death anxiety was unrelated to age, life stability, and serious illness type
Deploying An Optimism Model On The End Of The Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic began as a health problem which has also mutated into an economic, social, and psychological problem. Millions of victims required intensive care and many died. Furthermore, the pandemic has almost paralyzed the economy, impacted social life, and increased the number of people experiencing various psychological problems. Various efforts to overcome those problems have been implemented. However, optimism, a significant psychological dimension of coping, is arguably required to ensure that these efforts do not diminish. This study develops a contextual model of optimism by identifying collective coping and closeness to God as variables that have a direct impact on optimism. Meanwhile, individual preventive efforts are located as an antecedent to collective coping, but do not directly impact optimism. Data for the study were collected through online surveys during the pandemic with 544 respondents. The results of the data analyses showed that they fit the theoretical model developed. Individual preventive efforts influences optimism through collective coping. Furthermore, collective coping and closeness to God have direct effects on the emergence of optimism. This optimism model indicates the importance of collective efforts as a part of the drive to end the pandemic. Individuals also need spiritual strength to remain optimistic. Both must be present, in parallel with individual preventive efforts, as is often suggested by policymakers
The Role of Depression in the Effect of Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence on Suicidal Ideation in Early Adult
The phenomenon of suicide ideation is a problem that needs to be examined at this time. This study investigates the role of technology-facilitated sexual violence experience and depression on the appearance of suicidal ideation in emerging adults. A quantitative research was conducted on a sample of 322 respondents aged 18–25 years. Three scales were used in this research: the Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence Victimization Scale is established by Henry & Powell (2014), to measure the respondents’ technology-facilitated sexual violence experiences; Lovibond & Lovibond’s (1995) Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale to measure the respondents’ depression, anxiety, and stress; and Beck’s (1979) Scale of Suicidal Ideation established to measure the appearance of the respondents’ suicide ideation. The data were analyzed using the statistical correlation test, multivariate linear regression hierarchy, and path analysis. From the results, technology-facilitated sexual violence was found to have a significant effect on suicidal ideation in early adults. Furthermore, it was found that depression partially mediates the relationship between technology-facilitated sexual violence and suicidal ideation in early adults. This study is beneficial to developing a positive internet intervention approach to create more conducive virtual spaces
Psychometric Properties of Indonesian HEXACO-100: A Facet Level Analysis
The HEXACO personality model is a six-dimensional personality model that is partially independent from the Big Five personality model (Zettler et.al., 2020). Measurement using the HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised, its sixth dimension, Honesty-Humility, can capture previously unexplored images of personality. This study aims to adapt the HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised 100 items version (HEXACO-100) into the Indonesian language and examine its psychometric properties. A purposive sample of 605 participants responded to Indonesian HEXACO-100 (67,2% female; mean age: 25,1 years). The result showed that all six factors have good alpha reliability (all factors α > .7), and the exploratory factor analysis and correlation analysis between the dimensions support the validity of the six-dimensional personality model. It can be concluded that this study successfully adapted the HEXACO-100 personality inventory into the Indonesian language, strengthens the existence of a six-dimensional personality model in Indonesia, and underlines that the HEXACO personality inventory is a useful and reliable personality inventory for investigating personality structure in cross-cultural settings
Subjective Well-Being and Material Deprivation During COVID-19 Pandemic: A Study in Children and Adolescents in Indonesia
This study aimed to investigate the contribution of material deprivation on the subjective well-being (SWB) of children and adolescents aged 10-18 years old during COVID-19 in Indonesia. Participants (N = 3,094; 54.3% girls; 53.2% high school students) were children and adolescents from 33 provinces in Indonesia with mean age = 15.39. Convenience sampling was used in this study, of which data were collected using internet-based questionnaires. SWB was measured using three SWB scales: Children’s Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale (CW-SWBS), Overall Life Satisfaction (OLS), and one item measures subjective material well-being. Material deprivation was measured by participants’ reports on their accessibility to necessities they need in life. Participants were further asked whether they were worried about their family’s money and access to have food to eat each day. Data were analyzed using linear regression, and descriptive statistics using crosstabs, Chi-Square and ANOVA. Linear regression analysis results showed that material deprivation significantly contributed to lowering SWB scores, lack of access to have food to eat each day, and worrying about family’s money. Participants who experienced material deprivation reported lower SWB scores than those who experienced non-material deprivation. Girls reported lower SWB scores than boys, while older participants reported lower SWB scores than younger ones. Results are discussed using Cummins’ theory of SWB homeostasis. It is suggested that parents play a role as a buffer to assist children and adolescents in adapting to the adverse situation during pandemic COVID-19
Indonesian Trail Making Test: Analysis of Psychometric Properties, Effects of Demographic Variables, and Norms for Javanese Adults
Trail Making Test (TMT) has been widely used in Indonesia as an Executive Function (EF) test, however, no studies reported validity and reliability of the test. In this study, we analyzed TMT’s psychometric properties, including reliability and validity, effect of demographic variables such as education, age, and sex on the TMT, and propose norm scores for the urban population of Java Island. Four hundred ninety persons (aged 16-80 years) with varying education levels participated in the study. Four additional EF tests (Digit Span, Five Point, phonemic Verbal Fluency, and Stroop) were administered. Principal Component Analysis was used to test whether the structure of TMT supported theoretical foundations of EF. The test-retest reliability was estimated in different samples (N = 50). Results suggest that education increased and age decreased the performance, however there were no differences between high school graduates and undergraduates in the age range 16-39 years. The intraclass correlation as a reliability measure showed good results (TMTA, rs=0.76; TMT B, rs= 0.86; TMT B-A, rs=0.74). The PCA revealed that the TMT, Digit Span, and Five Point scores loaded highly on one construct, while Stroop, phonemic Verbal Fluency, and errors on Five Point test loaded highly on other. It can be concluded that TMT is a valid neuropsychological instrument measuring EF with high reliability score and has high sensitivity for education, and age effects. The study also provides TMT Norms and cut-off scores for Javanese population between 16 and 39 years old with senior high school and undergraduate level of education
Pandemic Fatigue: An Analysis of Twitter Users’ Sentiments Against the COVID-19 in Indonesia
Indonesian society is undergoing a shift of behavioral patterns towards the coronavirus (COVID) 19 indicating the symptoms of the pandemic fatigue phenomenon. Pandemic fatigue is defined as a gradual demotivation to adhere to recommended protective behaviors. Pandemic fatigue might reduce the effectiveness of health protocols and accelerate the spread of the virus. This study aims to examine the pandemic fatigue sentiment of Indonesian twitter-users chronologically and the factors causing the development of pandemic fatigue sentiment. The method of this study includes digital ethnographic theory using sentiment analysis based on the Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) algorithm and topic modelling using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analysis. The results showed a pattern of sentiment degression towards health protocols indicating the pandemic fatigue phenomenon. The factors causing the sentiment degression were influenced by three themes: (1) public criticism of the government's efforts to handle the spread of COVID-19, (2) experience in implementing health protocols, and (3) statements that against the government’s efforts to handle the spread of COVID-19. Based on the results of sentiment analysis and topic modelling, this study presents a public policy design referencing the World Health Organization (WHO) framework for community reinvigoration in the midst of pandemic fatigue that could be used for the government to undertake broader reforms to public health and social care for Indonesian society
Understanding the Meaning-Making of Romantic Relationships among Emerging Adults after Parental Divorce
Pursuing a romantic relationship is one of the most important developmental aspects of emerging adults. With the increasing divorce rate in Indonesia, the authors were interested in exploring how emerging adults make sense of romantic relationships after parental divorce. Three participants and two significant others were interviewed in this present study, in which interpretive phenomenological analysis was used as the approach to interpreting the data. This study generated two themes that show how emerging adults make meaning of romantic relationships, namely as a source of fear and a source of support. This contradictory meaning-making relates to the experience the participants had during their parents' divorce process and what they learned from the media or their significant others. These, coupled with human agency and the need for love, encourage the participants to learn from their parents' mistakes, develop certain behavioural patterns, and continue to seek romantic relationships in their lives. This study shows how interaction between parents during a divorce process can shape the meaning-making and behaviour patterns in the child’s romantic relationships. Therefore, it is suggested that divorced parents build an open communication, show positive interactions, and minimize exposing their children to negative interactions during the divorce process
