Edward Said’s Orientalism and the Representation of the East in Gardens of Water by Alan Drew
This research paper is aimed to uncover the ways in which the western author, Alan Drew, represents the East culture in the novel Gardens of Water (2003). The research employs qualitative descriptive study with the content analysis approach. The analysis of the novel is done within the theoretical framework of Orientalism proposed by Edward Said (1978). The results of the analysis show that the representation of non-western people and cultures confirms orientalist point of view that puts the East and the West in a binary opposition and represents the East as inferior to the West. The study also proves that the author uses typical stereotyping in representing the East in the novel such as untrustworthy, rude, barbaric and traditional and also exposes the issue of patriarchy which is usually pinned into the East Culture. This representation of the East leads to the justification of the West imperialism and colonization toward the East. Keywords : Orientalism, orientalist, binary opposition, representation of the East, West Imperialism
An Analysis of Students’ Recount Text by Using Systemic Functional Grammar
The present study entitled An Analysis of Students’ Recount Text by Using Systemic Functional Grammar aims at investigating students’ writing Recount text by identifying schematic structure and linguistic features of the text. The data resources were six pieces of Recount text written by the eighth semester students of English Department who were treated as respondents. To analyze the texts, transitivity of functional grammar developed by Halliday (1994) was applied to identify the linguistic features of the texts. Meanwhile, the schematic structure of Recount is adopted from Anderson and Anderson (2003) which was used to analyze the schematic structure of the text. The findings show that most students seemed to be able to apply the schematic structure of Recount because they put the schematic structure correctly in different paragraphs. However there was still one student (the writer of text 6) who put the schematic structure in one paragraph only. Dealing with the linguistic features, most students likely found problems in differentiating between the use of simple present tense, past tense, prepositional phrases, regular and irregular verbs. Therefore, it is recommended for the students to improve their knowledge and practice more in writing, particularly in writing Recount. Keywords: functional grammar, linguistic features, schematic structure, recount tex

This paper entitled “Women’s Portrayals in the Comic Books (A Visual Grammar of the Heroines’ Portrayals in the Selected Comic Books Published by DC Comics and Marvel)” is aimed at investigating how women, especially heroines are portrayed in the comic books and what the portrayals signify. The data are in the form of four online comics published by DC Comics and Marvel. The study finds that heroines are portrayed in negative and positive ways. The negative ways portray the heroines as sex symbols, the ones who sexually stimulate men’s attention in their appearance, greedy, fragile (especially when the heroines play their character as alter ego). Hero Construction Narrative In A Bug’s Life, The Film
The present study entitled Hero Construction Narrative in A Bug’s Life, The Film aims to investigate the film narrative of hero construction. The study employs a descriptive qualitative study with textual analysis approach. The present study adopted Hourihan’s (1997) theory as its major theoretical framework and the language of film theory (Heintz and Stracey, 2006). The study found that the hero construction in the film is presented through three phases there are the initiation phase, the conflict phase and the resolution phase. These phases are also analyzed through the language of the film. They are crafted through the pattern of cause and effect where film characters become the agent of causality. These characters are put in binary opposition to construct the hero in the narrative which is mediated through the language of film, such as camera shots, camera movement and mise en scène. The uses of binary opposition support the delivery of the didactic message in the film, since animation films that focus on hero’s journey are often directed to children. Keywords: Film, Animation Film, Narrative Cinema, Hero Construction, Children’s Literatur
