CO2/CH4 and He/N2 Separation Properties and Water Permeability Valuation of Mixed Matrix MWCNTs-Based Cellulose Acetate Flat Sheet Membranes: A Study of the Optimization of the Filler Material Dispersion Method
Get PDFThe main scope of this work is to develop nano-carbon-based mixed matrix celluloseacetate membranes (MMMs) for the potential use in both gas and liquid separation processes. Forthis purpose, a variety of mixed matrix membranes, consisting of cellulose acetate (CA) polymerand carbon nanotubes as additive material were prepared, characterized, and tested. Multi-walledcarbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as filler material and diacetone alcohol (DAA) as solvent.The first main objective towards highly efficient composite membranes was the proper preparationof agglomerate-free MWCNTs dispersions. Rotor-stator system (RS) and ultrasonic sonotrode (USS)were used to achieve the nanofillers’ dispersion. In addition, the first results of the application of thethree-roll mill (TRM) technology in the filler dispersion achieved were promising. The filler material,MWCNTs, was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and liquid nitrogen (LN2)adsorption-desorption isotherms at 77 K. The derivatives CA-based mixed matrix membranes werecharacterized by tensile strength and water contact angle measurements, impedance spectroscopy,gas permeability/selectivity measurements, and water permeability tests. The studied membranesprovide remarkable water permeation properties, 12–109 L/m2/h/bar, and also good separationfactors of carbon dioxide and helium separations. Specifically, a separation factor of 87 for 10%He/N2feed concentration and a selectivity value of 55.4 for 10% CO2/CH4feed concentrationwere achieved
ChainLineNet: Deep-Learning-Based Segmentation and Parameterization of Chain Lines in Historical Prints
Get PDFThe paper structure of historical prints is sort of a unique fingerprint. Paper with the same origin shows similar chain line distances. As the manual measurement of chain line distances is time consuming, the automatic detection of chain lines is beneficial. We propose an end-to-end trainable deep learning method for segmentation and parameterization of chain lines in transmitted light images of German prints from the 16th Century. We trained a conditional generative adversarial network with a multitask loss for line segmentation and line parameterization. We formulated a fully differentiable pipeline for line coordinates’ estimation that consists of line segmentation, horizontal line alignment, and 2D Fourier filtering of line segments, line region proposals, and differentiable line fitting. We created a dataset of high-resolution transmitted light images of historical prints with manual line coordinate annotations. Our method shows superior qualitative and quantitative chain line detection results with high accuracy and reliability on our historical dataset in comparison to competing methods. Further, we demonstrated that our method achieves a low error of less than 0.7 mm in comparison to manually measured chain line distances
Topographical hazard analysis of heavy rainfall events in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis using a geographic information system related to the operational capability of the disaster management
Get PDFIn der vorliegenden Arbeit wird mit dem Geoinformationssystem ArcGIS Pro auf Basis eines digitalen Geländemodells mit einer Gitterweite von einem Meter eine Topographische Gefährdungsanalyse durchge-führt. Damit werden die Auswirkungen von Starkregenereignissen auf die Gefahrenabwehr abgeschätzt. Diese wird für das gesamte Gebiet des Rhein-Sieg-Kreises in Nordrhein-Westfahlen durchgeführt. Die in dieser Analyse betrachteten Organisationen der Gefahrenabwehr sind Feuerwehren, Rettungsdienst und die Ortsverbände des THW im Kreisgebiet. Für die genannten Organisationen werden zunächst die Standorte sowie die dort stationierten Einheiten bzw. Fahrzeuge ermittelt und im Anschluss kartiert.
Mittels der Topographischen Gefährdungsanalyse werden ausschließlich anhand der Oberflächenbeschaffenheit Geländesenken und oberflächige Fließwege errechnet. Diese werden nach Prüfung und Bearbeitung zur Ermittlung der potentiellen objektbezogenen Gefährdungen der Liegenschaften der Organisationen sowie der Straßeninfrastruktur genutzt. Das für die Berechnung genutzte Untersuchungsgebiet erstreckt sich dabei in einigen Bereichen über die Verwaltungsgrenzen des Rhein-Sieg-Kreises hinaus, um die Grenzen der Wassereinzugsgebiete zu berücksichtigen.
Am Ende der Analyse werden aus den Ergebnissen beispielhaft Karten für die Organisationen der Gefahrenabwehr erstellt, um die Gefährdungen in einer übersichtlichen Form zu visualisieren und die Informationen nutzbar zu machen. Diese werden sowohl an die Art von seismischen Mikrozonierungskarten angelehnt als auch an bestehende Karten, wie sie z.B. bei den Feuerwehren genutzt werden, angepasst.
Aus der Bewertung der Standorte der Organisationen anhand der ermittelten Senken ergibt sich eine hohe Anzahl von etwa zwei Dritteln der Liegenschaften, welche durch Starkregenereignisse verursachte Überflutungen gefährdet sind. Daraus lässt sich ein Bedarf weiterer Untersuchungen ableiten. Auf Basis von Starkregengefahrenkarten, die auf komplexeren Berechnungsmodellen beruhen sowie Einzelfallbetrachtungen sollten diese Gefährdungen bestätigt oder widerlegt werden.In this study, a topographic hazard analysis is carried out with the geographic information system ArcGIS Pro on the basis of a digital terrain model with a grid size of one meter. This is used to estimate the effects of heavy rainfall events on disaster management. This is carried out for the entire Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia. The hazard prevention organizations considered in this analysis are fire departments, rescue services and the local units of the THW in the district area. For the mentioned organizations, the locations as well as the units or vehicles stationed there are first determined and then mapped.
By means of the topographic hazard analysis, terrain depressions and surface flow paths are calculated exclusively on the basis of the surface conditions. After examination and processing, these are used to determine the potential object-related hazards to the organizations' properties and road infrastructure. The study area used for the calculation extends in some areas beyond the administrative boundaries of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in order to take into account the boundaries of the watersheds.
At the end of the analysis, exemplary maps are created from the results for the organizations of hazard prevention in order to visualize the hazards in a clear form and to make the information usable. These will be based on the type of seismic microzonation maps as well as adapted from existing maps such as those used by fire departments.
Based on the evaluation of the organizations' locations using the identified sinks, there are a high number of properties, approximately two-thirds, that are at risk for flooding caused by heavy rain events. This suggests a need for further investigation. On the basis of heavy rain hazard maps, which are based on more complex calculation models, as well as individual case studies, these hazards should be confirmed or refuted
Assessing NGO’s engagement in WASH: The contributions of school sanitation projects to just transition
Get PDFHuman civilization has a great history of managing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) services. But such services in rural areas have been neglected throughout our history. Numerous multimillion dollars WaSH interventions have been implemented in rural areas to eradicate open defecation, but most of them failed to create a demand for sanitation. Lack of equity and fair participation in approaches to change behavior and mindset, rather than habits, has made it hard for governments to achieve their WaSH related targets. Participatory rural sanitation approaches that focus on behavior change and ownership building among the community members have helped in the transition to open defecation free (ODF) societies. A justice-focused sanitation approach shows potential in fast-tracking this transition. Just transition is a concept that has not been endured in the sanitation discussion yet but shows the potential of sustainable WaSH solutions. This social empirical research has explored the feasibility of a justice-based sanitation approach guiding a transition towards societies with universal access to sanitation services. A just sanitation transition framework was adapted from the considered theoretical foundations and was used to map the capability and justice dimensions of two rural sanitation approaches being implemented in schools in the Mukuyu community in Trans-Nzoia county, Kenya. The adapted framework has been able to compute both sanitation approaches on a scoring tool, quantitatively assessing the productivity and justice dimensions of both approaches. This research has helped in establishing the viability of a just sanitation transition framework to produce an informed understanding of the potential of rural sanitation approaches to produce desired results while being just. Study findings help in filling research gaps and laying the foundation to the just transition debate in the sanitation sector and opens a window to further researches on the same, in the future
Partizipation in der politischen Jugendbildung
Get PDFDer Begriff der Partizipation ist in Gesellschaft und Politik, aber auch in der Pädagogik zunehmenden in den Fokus gerückt. Verknüpft sind damit zumeist Vorstellungen von Beteiligung, Mitentscheidung, Verantwortungsübernahme und sozialem oder politischen Engagement.
Die vorliegende Arbeit thematisiert die Partizipation speziell im Feld der politischen Jugendbildung und beschäftigt sich damit, was das Partizipationsverhalten von Jugendlichen beeinflusst und wie Angebote möglichst partizipativ gestaltet werden können. Dazu werden zentrale wissenschaftliche Diskurslinien und Kontroversen zu den Begrifflichkeiten der Partizipation und der politischen Jugendbildung skizziert. Ebenso werden pädagogische und konzeptionelle Grundlagen für eine partizipative Jugendbildungsarbeit, wie etwa der Beutelsbacher Konsens, der Dreischritt der politischen Bildung, das soziale Lernen oder die Adressat:innenorientierung dargestellt.
Auf Basis der festgestellten Grundlagen und unter Hinzuziehung dreier Studien von Becker und Thimmel (2019), von Schwanenflügel (2015) und Balzter, Ristau und Schröder (2014) können am Ende der Arbeit Handlungsmöglichkeiten zur Einflussnahme auf die Partizipationsatmosphäre und das Partizipationsverhalten von Jugendlichen in Angeboten der politischen Jugendbildung gefolgert werden. Partizipation wird als leitendes Ziel zur Förderung des Kompetenzerwerbs und der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung identifiziert. Insofern wird auch das Ziel der Etablierung von Partizipation als Strukturprinzip in pädagogischen Angeboten formuliert

Das Warenhaus Tietz in Aachen. Ein Bauwerk im Spannungsfeld von Zeitgeschichte und Architektur 1892-1965
Get PDFIm Jahr 1892 eröffnete Leonhard Tietz sein erstes Geschäft in Aachen, 1906 folgte die Eröffnung eines großen, architektonisch markanten Warenhauses am Markt gegenüber dem Rathaus. Der „Tietze Lejjenad“ wurde in Aachen zum Inbegriff des Einkaufens. Schon 1933 wurde der Tietz-Konzern „arisiert“ und in Kaufhof umbenannt. Die Aufgabe des Standorts am Markt im Jahr 1955 durch den Kaufhof und der Abriss des Warenhauses im Jahr 1965 erzeugen bis heute Unverständnis in der Stadt.

Remote Trial and Remote Detention Hearing in Light of the ECHR Standard of the Rights of the Accused
No full textThis article concerns the compliance of the institutions of remote trials and remote detention hearings introduced to the CCP by the Polish ‘coronavirus act’ of 19 June 2020 with the ECHR standard on the rights of the accused. In the first part of the article, it is indicated that the ECtHR in its jurisprudence accepts that a trial in the form of a videoconference is not in principle contrary to the ECHR, provided, however, that there are compelling reasons to dispense with the traditional trial (main or appellate) and that the procedure of using a videoconference itself meets the requirements of a fair trial according to Article 6 ECHR and ensures the accused both effective personal participation in the trial and effective use of the services of a defence counsel, in particular the confidentiality of the lawyer’s contact with their client. The Covid-19 outbreak has changed European justice systems, and now videoconferencing in court proceedings is seen not only as an exceptional measure, but as possibly an effective part of the ordinary activity of courts. The analysis of the assumptions of remote trials in ordinary Polish criminal proceedings shows that this institution does not meet the standards of a fair trial, especially the standard of the effective participation of the defence counsel. In contrast, compared to a remote trial, a remote detention hearing in Poland has a wider scope of application and poses serious risks to the standards on deprivation of liberty (Article 5(3) and Article 3 ECHR) and effective defence (Article 6(3) ECHR). Anselm of Canterbury and the Third Reich: Gottlieb Söhngen on Upholding the Humanum Amid the Inhumane
No full textGottlieb Söhngen (1892-1971) is a figure of no small significance: he directed both Joseph Ratzinger’s (now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) dissertation and habilitation, and his writings on Anselm of Canterbury’s theological contri-butions illustrate the struggles of a then still nascent theological discipline: fundamental theology. Söhngen’s explorations occur within the context of National Socialist rule, while he teaches theology at Akademie Braunsberg in the eponymous city located in East Prussia (1937-45) during the dark years of the Third Reich. This investigation shows how very much Söhngen does justice to both Anselm’s oeuvre and the Roman Catholic statement, while nevertheless introducing pointers to pre-Christian, Germanic notions in order to flatter the Nazi rulers, but more importantly to underscore how pagan concepts ultimately indirectly prepare the ground for the implantation of the Gospel.REV. Foreign influences in the texts of glossy magazines in Russian, Polish and Spanish (on the example of Cosmopolitan)
No full textThe focus of this paper is the impact of English observed in the language of an international magazine Cosmopolitan. The research was conducted taking into account three language versions of the monthly magazine: Russian, Polish and Spanish. Factual material was excerpted from the periodicals published in 2017–2021. Taking up this topic stems from the need to fill the gap in research on the language of luxury magazines, which have a great influence on forming the canons of linguistic norms and the linguistic awareness of their readers. The aim of the study is to analyze the collected Anglicisms (mainly loanwoard) in terms of their function, way of adaptation and presentation in the text space. Determining the reasons for the popularity of foreign forms in a given language space is also an important point of analysis.
