The inter-border element of Zygmunt Gloger’s works: the Ukrainian perspective
The article focuses on the Ukrainian perception of Zygmunt Glogre’s works in the writings of Iwan Franko, Michajł Hruszewski and Stepan Tomasziwski, and examines an
inter-border element in the works of the Polish writer. As is argued, Gloger’s heritage is today a starting point for interdisciplinary studies of the history of Poles, Ukrainians, Lithuanians and Belarusians living in the lands of the old Polish Republic. Gloger managed to create a compendium of the multicultural old Poland.Rościsław P. Radyszewski – prof. dr hab., kierownik Katedry Polonistyki Kijowskiego Narodowego Uniwersytetu im. Teaching Business English idioms through visuals
Idioms – non-literal, metaphorical phrases – are integral components of any language acquisition. Many English language learners consider Business English idioms to be rather difficult to grasp, so try to avoid them wherever possible. However, due to the importance of Business English idioms in everyday exchanges, researchers are constantly in search of more effective ways to present, practise, and produce them. This study seeks to highlight the importance of using visuals – namely pictures and video clips – in teaching Business English idioms. 40 Economics faculty students at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine) who had attained an upper-intermediate level of English proficiency (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) took part in the experiment. The data was collected during the experiment, then analysed by means of descriptive statistics. The results confirmed that pictures are more effective than video clips in terms of Business English idiom recognition and retention. The findings of the study may have both theoretical and didactic implications for scholars, textbook authors, curriculum developers, teachers, and Business English learners [email protected] Franko National University of LvivAlexander, R.J. Scientific Paper Recommendation Systems: A Literature Review of Recent Publications
Scientific writing builds upon already published papers. Manual identification of publications to read, cite or consider as related papers relies on a researcher’s ability to identify fitting keywords or initial papers from which a literature search can be started. The rapidly increasing amount of papers has called for automatic measures to find the desired relevant publications, so-called paper recommendation systems. As the number of publications increases so does the amount of paper recommendation systems. Former literature reviews focused on discussing the general landscape of approaches throughout the years and highlight the main directions. We refrain from this perspective, instead we only consider a comparatively small time frame but analyse it fully. In this literature review we discuss used methods, datasets, evaluations and open challenges encountered in all works first released between January 2019 and October 2021. The goal of this survey is to provide a comprehensive and complete overview of current paper recommendation systems
A Framework for Scaling Urban Transformative Resilience through Utilizing Volunteered Geographic Information
Resilience in the urban context can be described as a continuum of absorptive, adaptive, and transformative capacities. The need to move toward a sustainable future and bounce forward after any disruption has led recent urban resilience initiatives to engage with the concept of transformative resilience when and where conventional and top-down resilience initiatives are less likely to deliver effective strategies, plans, and implementable actions. Transformative resilience pathways emphasize the importance of reflexive governance, inclusive co-creation of knowledge, innovative and collaborative learning, and self-organizing processes. To support these transformative pathways, considering techno-social co-evolution and digital transformation, using new data sources such as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and crowdsourcing are being promoted. However, a literature review on VGI and transformative resilience reveals that a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and capacities of utilizing VGI for transformative resilience is lacking. Therefore, based on a qualitative content analysis of available resources, this paper explores the key aspects of using VGI for transformative resilience and proposes a comprehensive framework structured around the identified legal, institutional, social, economic, and technical aspects to formalize the process of adopting VGI in transformative resilience initiatives
Infectious RNA: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Biology, Therapeutic Intervention, and the Quest for a Vaccine
Different mechanisms mediate the toxicity of RNA. Genomic retroviral mRNA hijacks infected host cell factors to enable virus replication. The viral genomic RNA of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) encompasses nine genes encoding in less than 10 kb all proteins needed for replication in susceptible host cells. To do so, the genomic RNA undergoes complex alternative splicing to facilitate the synthesis of the structural, accessory, and regulatory proteins. However, HIV strongly relies on the host cell machinery recruiting cellular factors to complete its replication cycle. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) targets different steps in the cycle, preventing disease progression to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The comprehension of the host immune system interaction with the virus has fostered the development of a variety of vaccine platforms. Despite encouraging provisional results in vaccine trials, no effective vaccine has been developed, yet. However, novel promising vaccine platforms are currently under investigation
Overcoming challenges for implementing nature-based solutions in deltaic environments: insights from the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh
AbstractThe Ganges-Brahmaputra (GB) delta is one of the most disaster-prone areas in the world due to a combination of high population density and exposure to tropical cyclones, floods, salinity intrusion and other hazards. Due to the complexity of natural deltaic processes and human influence on these processes, structural solutions like embankments are inadequate on their own for effective hazard mitigation. This article examines nature-based solutions (NbSs) as a complementary or alternative approach to managing hazards in the GB delta. We investigate the potential of NbS as a complementary and sustainable method for mitigating the impacts of coastal disaster risks, mainly cyclones and flooding. Using the emerging framework of NbS principles, we evaluate three existing approaches: tidal river management, mangrove afforestation, and oyster reef cultivation, all of which are actively being used to help reduce the impacts of coastal hazards. We also identify major challenges (socioeconomic, biophysical, governance and policy) that need to be overcome to allow broader application of the existing approaches by incorporating the NbS principles. In addition to addressing GB delta-specific challenges, our findings provide more widely applicable insights into the challenges of implementing NbS in deltaic environments globally
Weiter ist die Generierung von RTLIL::Cell Objekten als erster Schritt zur Synthese zu verstehen, da sie durch Technologie Mapping reale Komponenten abbilden könnenThe aim of this thesis is to answer the question of how Yosys reads Verilog and generates RTLIL. By answering this question, the data structure RTLIL and the link to a hardware design written in Verilog should be better understood. For this purpose, the front end of Yosys and the data structure RTLIL was examined more closely. The result of this analysis
is that the AstNode structure plays an essential role in the conversion from Verilog to RTLIL and is used to form an abstract syntax tree during read in. Only the type of the node influences how the RTLIL generator handles it. Furthermore, the generation of RTLIL::Cell objects are to be understood as a first step towards synthesis, as they can introduce real components by means of technology mapping
How to Go Fast - Ways to Model and Approach Speedrun Routing Algorithmically
Speedrunning in general means to go fast in a video game. This simple concept has an immense impact on the ways players engage with games. The inherent aspect of optimization within this esports niche makes it a good application field of optimization methods. This work gives an overview of speedrunning as an esports discipline. Prior works on this subject are discussed and assessed and relevant nomenclature is introduced. Using this information, routing --- the procedure of planning a speedrun --- is picked up as a graph optimization problem.
Nintendo's iconic game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from 1998 is used as a working example to assess previous works and to explore more of this mainly uncharted field of research. To do so, the process of speedrun modeling is conducted as exhaustive as possible within the limits of a work like this. All relevant steps to obtain a faithful model are lined out. This procedure yields a partial game graph with 6764 nodes and approx. 321,022 edges --- some uncertainty included. Current pathfinding techniques are discussed and assessed regarding their applicability to the presented speedrun routing problem. The resulting graph model and algorithmic approaches present a good reference to identify the most promising points of improvement. Challenges, flaws and possible solutions to still standing problems are discussed and assumptions from prior works are assessed. Finally, further tracks of scholarly and community work in this area are suggested and possible extensions to the approach are lined out.
It is shown that speedrun routing is not a trivial shortest path problem that can be solved with conventional methods. Furthermore, it is made clear that different games can have vastly differing routing circumstances. Assumptions of other works have been assessed using a working example and many interesting challenges and fields of further study and research in the field of speedrunning have been identified. Some probabilistic pathfinding methods and current works on AI agents for games pose interesting approaches which can be extended on by utilizing the findings of the presented work. Specialized modeling and optimization techniques have to be employed in order to have a positive effect on the speedrunning community
