REDEFINING AMERICAN INTERESTS: ANALYZING US POLICY SHIFTS DURING THE SPACE RACE WITH CHINA (2011-2021)

This research delves into the changing patterns of identity and anarchy culture experienced by the United States in the chronology of the space race with China from 2011 to 2021. Utilizing Alexander Wendt’s constructivist theory, this study explores the transformation in US space policy as a response to China’s growing presence in space exploration. The qualitative methodology employed involves thematic analysis of secondary data sources, including congressional minutes, official statements, media coverage, and public speeches. The findings reveal a dynamic shift in the US’s identity, influenced by its interactions on the international stage. During the Cold War, the US’s identity, shaped by a Hobbesian culture of anarchy, was marked by rivalry with the Soviet Union. Post-Cold War, the focus shifted to demonstrating leadership through international cooperation, reflecting a Kantian logic. However, with the emergence of China as a formidable competitor, the US identity has once again transformed, now characterized by a Lockean culture of competition rather than direct conflict. This shift has led to significant policy reformulations, including strategic partnerships and renewed emphasis on self-reliance in space missions, such as the Artemis program and collaboration with private sector companies like SpaceX. These results highlight the intricate relationship between national identity, perceived threats, and policy responses, underscoring the fluid nature of US space policy in the context of global space contestation

RUSSIA-CHINA PARTNERSHIP: AFTERMATH CONSEQUENCES OF THE UKRAINE CRISIS

This research examines the Russia-China alliance after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, which impacted the world and led to polarity in international politics. The United States and its western allies have tried to weaken Russia’s dominance economically and politically. At the same time, China has supported and strengthened cooperation with Russia. This study uses a qualitative method by analyzing and critically reading the data collected through literature study. The result found that the expansion of NATO membership triggers Russia to act because of external threats. The West agreed to embargoes and sanctions against Russia, affecting 90% of Russian oil and gas markets. However, Russia showed its strength and warned of nuclear threats. This study also contends that amid the US pressure that caused Russia to lose its Western buyers, China backed Russia and became its potential oil buyer. The US pressure on Russia has brought Russia-China even closer

FROM MOBILIZATION TO POLITICIZATION: UNDERSTANDING POLITICAL DYNAMICS OF COMMUNITY-BASED URBAN FOOD SECURITY POLICY IN CITY OF MAKASSAR

Since decentralization was reinforced in 1999, local politicians have exploited local policies to enhance their popularity and electability. In this study, I describe the implementation of a food security policy to demonstrate how the local arena had undergone massive political dynamics through unintegrated food governance demonstrated by local governments in Makassar City.  This article aims to analyze the dynamic of urban food policy implemented by the municipality from 2013 to 2023. A qualitative approach had been employed through a case study of the implementation of food security policy. Data were collected by snowball method to eminent informants. Also, focus group discussions were employed in certain community groups. This study found that food policy in Makassar City during the study period had shown a political mobilization rather than a pure food security policy to help the community. In the policy planning, the failure was found in the limited technical analysis. The people who dwell in this city were not prepared for agricultural activities, including planting, maintaining the plants, and soil treatment. Also, the typical vegetables that were planted were not suitable for the climatic characteristics of this city. This study also found that media framing was massively exploited to escalate the positive framing of the ‘inclusivity’ of the leadership and attract the people to engage beyond food diversification.  On the other side, as this policy was funded through a discretionary approach, massive negative sentiment had emerged, particularly from the legislative. They felt like an abandoned partner. Consequently, the government should create an alternative mechanism through shadow bureaucrats, designed by the mayor

MUSICAL THEATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS: ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DISCOURSES IN “DPR – MUSIKAL” (2021)

“DPR - Musikal” is a highly acclaimed and ambitious musical theater video created by SkinnyIndonesian24 (Jovial da Lopez & Andovi da Lopez) that features a compelling environmental message. This piece depicts the contested meaning of nature and how it is influenced by different interests in the DPR. This research will examine the environmental politics discourses present in “DPR - Musikal” as an artistic creation that establishes a connection between environmental concerns and the notion of power. The research employed a qualitative approach and utilized Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. Data was gathered through video transcripts, direct interviews with informants (Jovial da Lopez), and additional documents. This research identifies two discourses in the piece: (1) sustainable development which reconciles the objectives of development agenda and environmental conservation, and (2) anti-capitalism which is identified through the narratives of land privatization, natural resources exploitation, and capitalism’s dominance in policymaking within the Indonesian parliament. These two discourses represent contrasting political thoughts, hence confirming incohesive solutions to the environmental problems. Although the producers condemn the dominance of business power and the exploitation of nature, they do not present a radical opposition to capitalism. Instead, they exhibit a lenient stance towards the development agenda, thus exemplifying the dominant influence of capitalist ideology within the musical theater production

This study discusses the Role of Women in Efforts to Increase Women’s Representation in the City Council of Banjarmasin for the Period 2019-2024. The low participation of women in politics in Banjarmasin, especially their representation in the City Council, remains low. The aim of this research is to identify the roles of female council members in promoting women’s representation in the City Council of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province. The research design employed in this study is qualitative research method with data collection techniques through interviews and documentation. The collected data were processed using an inductive approach and analyzed through steps including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study utilized the Role Theory by Biddle and Thomas as proposed by Sarwono (2015). The research findings from the four dimensions have been successfully implemented. There are supporting factors, such as internal factors like the lack of qualifications and quality among women, minimal support among women themselves, and a public preference leaning more towards men, which pose significant obstacles. External factors such as policies for empowering women, support from civil society organizations, the role of mass media, and societal awareness also play crucial roles. Efforts made include direct actions like empowering women, political education, and quotas or affirmative policies, which are seen as crucial steps to enhance women’s representation in the Banjarmasin City DPRD (Regional People’s Representative Council). Additionally, indirect efforts such as education and increasing gender awareness are considered important, focusing on changing societal views regarding women’s roles in politics and government policy support. These measures aim to improve women’s representation in the Banjarmasin City DPRD by altering societal perceptions of women’s roles in politics and gaining government policy support. All of these are integral to creating an inclusive and equitable environment for political participation for all citizens

THE PARADOXICAL POLICIES, POLITICS OF TASTES, AND CLASSIC INDONESIAN EXPLOITATION CINEMA OF THE NEW ORDER REGIME

Although the New Order Regime (1966-1998) was widely known for its strict censorship and government control, there was a simultaneous rise in producing exploitation films with graphic and provocative images. This kind of cinema was exported internationally in the 1980s and re-released in the 2000s by transnational DVD distributors. This article analyzed the transformation of exploitation films, which were disregarded and undervalued by the Government, cultural elites, and cinema critics. It explored how these films became a battleground for the politics of taste and resulted in a series of contradictions within the political policies of the New Order. The study focused on policy studies, examining film-related policies (such as presidential decree and censorship regulations), and analyzed the findings by thoroughly examining the regulations’ trends, patterns, and anomalies. As a result, paradoxically, the New Order had to undertake trial and error towards the films that they were actually shunned, which resulted in the blooming of this kind of movie
