MODERATED IDENTITY POLITICS: MUSLIM VOTERS AND RELIGIOUS DEPOLARIZATION IN NORTH MALUKU’S 2024 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION

This study examines religious polarization in North Maluku, proposing moderated identity politics and a hybrid representation model to explain post-conflict electoral behavior. It highlights local leaders who strategically balance identity appeals with cross-group alliances, integrating structural and agential factors to advance electoral theory and offer a replicable model for mitigating identity-based conflict in plural Indonesian regions. Using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, quantitative data were first collected from 100 proportionally sampled respondents. Subsequently, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 key informants. Data triangulation, comparing survey results with interview findings, ensured consistency and strengthened the validity of the research conclusions. The study presents four novel contribution findings. First, it challenges conventional religious voting, demonstrating Sherly Tjoanda’s Catholic victory in a Muslim-majority province, attributed to economic pragmatism, political legacy, and networks over religious affiliation. Second, it introduces the Hybrid Representation Model, combining development performance with a moderate religious figure. Third, it refines voter decision-making through Post-Conflict Electoral Rationality and welfare populism, illustrating how trauma fosters pragmatism. Finally, it develops Moderated Identity Politics, integrating local factors like Nahdlatul Ulama’s influence and conflict trauma to reduce polarization and promote electoral pragmatism. The 2024 North Maluku gubernatorial election, with the Sherly-Sarbin ticket’s victory, exemplified pragmatic considerations outweighing religious identity. This model outcome establishes Moderated Identity Politics that can depolarize elections by endorsing competence-based, cross-faith alliances, and prioritizes a competence-plus-credibility approach. In contexts with a dominant, moderate Islamic organization and where economic competition is not a zero-sum game

This study examines how Open Government initiatives enhance the effectiveness of the Independent Farmer Card (KPM) Plus Program and their subsequent impacts on Food Security and Food Independence among rural communities. The research problem of this study is that some farmers lack an understanding of how to access support and follow application instructions for agricultural aid through the KPM Plus Program. The research analyzes the impact of transparency, participation, and collaboration within government frameworks on agricultural support. The findings highlight that Open Government initiatives significantly enhance the effectiveness of the KPM Plus Program, leading to better food security and independence for farmers. While SEM results confirm that strong governance positively influences agricultural programs, the model’s fit indices indicate a need for refinement to capture the underlying dynamics better. The study recommends strengthening Open Government practices to enhance program effectiveness and food security in rural areas. Future research should consider additional variables and refine the model for deeper insights into the relationship between governance and agriculture. This research contributes valuable perspectives on rural development, highlighting the importance of transparent and participative governance in advancing agricultural support and food sustainability

THE POLITICIZATION OF SECURITY ISSUES IN POLITICAL LEADERSHIP: A STUDY ON THE “ASING DAN ASENG” NARRATIVE IN INDONESIAN ELECTIONS

This study investigates the politicization of security issues in Indonesian electoral politics through the construction and mobilization of the “Asing dan Aseng” narrative—a rhetorical strategy that depicts foreign influence and ethnic Chinese communities as existential threats to national sovereignty. The research aims to understand how political actors strategically use this narrative to mobilize voter support and legitimize their leadership. Using the theoretical lens of securitization and the politics of fear, the study applies a qualitative method based on critical discourse analysis of purposively selected campaign speeches, media coverage, and propaganda materials from the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections and the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. The analysis reveals three dominant narrative frames: the portrayal of foreign economic control, ethnic scapegoating of Chinese Indonesians, and the betrayal of national interest by political elites. These narratives are conveyed through speech acts, media framing, and disinformation, transforming political competition into perceived national emergencies. The findings indicate that while effective in galvanizing electoral support, this strategy intensifies political polarization, delegitimizes opponents, and reinforces exclusionary populist nationalism. The study concludes that the instrumentalization of fear and identity in electoral politics poses serious threats to democratic integrity, social cohesion, and institutional legitimacy, calling for greater media literacy, counter-disinformation efforts, and democratic safeguards

This research explores the transformative impact of social media on political campaigns, particularly in the context of Malaysia’s 15th General Election (GE15). Social media platforms as a political campaigning tool highlight its influence on young voters and their perceptions of political figures. In addition, social media has revolutionized the dynamics of political engagement, it has also introduced challenges such as the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and unequal access among political parties. This research applied a qualitative method by comparing various literatures. Leveraging The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study aims to analyze how social media influences election outcomes and shape public opinion. The findings reveal that social media played a significant role in GE15, with candidates strategically utilizing platforms like Facebook and TikTok to engage voters, especially the youth demographic. Ultimately, social media not only serves as a battleground for public discourse but also shapes the political landscape by reaching out to digital natives and first-time voters who rely on social media for news and information. This research contributes to the understanding of digital campaign dynamics by demonstrating how the perceived ease of use and usefulness of social media influence political campaigning. It underscores the critical role of technological acceptance in the adoption of new media strategies by political actors. By applying TAM, this study provides valuable insights into the power of social media in modern political campaigns, offering practical recommendations for political strategists and parties aiming to enhance their digital engagement and campaign effectiveness in future elections

CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES IN THE MALACCA STRAITS: INDONESIA’S STRATEGIC APPROACH THROUGH BSSN AND IMIC

The government’s attention is anticipated to be directed towards the proper management of maritime cybersecurity in the Malacca Strait, given the intricate nature of the dangers involved. This will assist Indonesia’s objectives as a Global Maritime Axis. Indonesia has created institutional synergies through BSSN and BAKAMLA to ensure that daily operations in this area are at the forefront of minimizing maritime cybersecurity threats. Using theories of cybersecurity, maritime security, and security cooperation, this article aims to understand the cooperation between these institutions, namely BSSN through BDS and BAKAMLA with IMIC, in the field of maritime security, including the mitigation of maritime cybersecurity threats that jeopardize national sovereignty. The essay uses a descriptive qualitative method to show how Indonesia is working hard to merge these two agencies so they can better address maritime cybersecurity in Indonesian waters and this paper was validated by interviewing several actors or strategic position holders in IMIC and BSSN who play a direct role in the technical field. This involves working together to address marine cybersecurity concerns in the “Nusantara Jaya,” or Malacca Strait. Though decisions from the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) are still pending, in practice, collaboration between these government entities is dependent on the legal frameworks provided by Indonesian laws and regulations controlling marine security, safety, and law enforcement. After these frameworks are put into effect, it is envisaged that they will make maritime management and operations clearer and avoid redundancies between the pertinent agencies

LABOUR AND POLITICS IN CONTEMPORARY INDONESIA: THE CASE OF PARTAI BURUH (1999-2024)

    No full text
This article reviews the presence and progress of the Labour Party in Indonesia in the Reformation Era (1999-2024). Labour and political dynamics in Indonesia have emerged since the Dutch colonial period. In the postcolonial era, the relationship between labour and politics was also dynamic. In the 1950s and 1960s they followed a political trend dominated by political parties. During Soeharto’s New Order political regime since the late 1960s, professional organizations, including labours, were not allowed to participate in politics. The state only approves one labour organization with limited space for movement. Entering the post-1998 Reform Era, labour organizations are no longer single, with the presence of several labour unions. Apart from that, the party experiment with a labour label is back. Even though it has mass numbers spread across many cities, the Labour Party has always failed to win seats in parliament. However, labour union actors continue to engage in politics, including by selling support for certain candidates in presidential elections. In fact, the Labour Party’s re-participation in the 2024 General Election also recorded its failure to become a political party that won seats in parliament (DPR/MPR). Why political experiments with party labels always fail in Indonesia in the Reformation Era is a question that will be answered in this research

THE PHENOMENON OF POLITICAL VOLUNTARISM IN GENERAL ELECTIONS: BETWEEN DEMOCRACY, POLITICAL PARTICIPATION, AND POLITICAL PARTIES

This study examines the phenomenon of political voluntarism in the 2024 General Elections in Indonesia, focusing on its role in shaping voter engagement, democratic participation, and political mobilization. The presence of political voluntarism is considered crucial in advocating ideas, values, aspirations, and has an impact on vote acquisition due to its broader nature in reaching various voter segments. There are three pairs of candidates in the 2024 General Elections, each with political volunteers engaging in various activities to support the candidates, such as “Desak Anies,” “Slepet Imin,” “Joget Gemoy,” “Demok(e)asi,” and “Tabrak Prof!”. The research methodology employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques involve secondary data from literature studies, including books, journals, news, and social media. The results of this research indicate that the phenomenon of political voluntarism in the 2024 General Elections is considered crucial for democracy. The presence of political voluntarism can revitalize democratic values through active participation of the public in responding to issues and involvement in political contests. Public trust crisis in political parties arises from the perception that political parties are unable to mediate between the public and the state in advocating the ideas and aspirations of the community. Therefore, the involvement of the public in politics through political volunteers is present to independently champion the values and aspirations believed in. Political volunteers not only play a role in increasing political awareness in society but also operate independently from the party system
