Unpacking Layers of Space –Time Complexity in Land–Use Dynamics. A Case Study from the Olive Agrosystems of Sicily (Italy). GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 2|
The biocultural heritage of historical landscapes is an expression of intertwined ecological and socio-cultural dynamics at different temporal and spatial scales. Such a legacy is what confers high nature value on agricultural systems worldwide. Today there is an urgent need to develop approaches that may allow a more integrated study of biocultural heritage in order to better direct future endeavours for the sustainable management on such agricultural systems. Here, a methodological approach to unpack space-time complexity in the land-use dynamics of historic and current-day agrosystems is presented, based on the use of contextual and spatial-relational segmentation techniques within the research framework of historical ecology. With reference to work done in a case study area in Sicily, the authors first extract geographic contextual configurations and develop a spatial-relational ontology for their semantic interpretation, before using these spatial objects as temporal proxies to disentangle the spatial and temporal dynamics of land use. The result is a cross-disciplinary approach in which perspectives from historical ecology can be used to achieve a deeper understanding of evidence extracted from remotely sensed images. At the same time, advanced spatial analysis techniques may provide a further interpretative tool for scientific inquiry into biocultural heritage

The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2020 (The Söderberg Expedition): Excavations in the cemetery of Hala Sultan Tekke. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
In autumn 2020, the 11th season of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke took place in extramural Area A, where, based on indications provided by magnetometer surveys, tombs, possible ritual pits, and numerous wells were found, but no architectural remains. Tomb RR, which had been partly exposed in 2018 and 2019, was further excavated. It revealed a preliminary minimum total of 54 individuals (MNI) and numerous artefacts including, inter alia, complete ceramic vessels, figurines, jewellery, ivory objects, a scarab and a cylinder seal. The life span of the tomb can, on the evidence to date, be assigned from the LC IIA1 to LC IIC1 period, i.e., roughly from the last quarter of the 15th to the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 13th century BCE. Just to the south of Tomb RR another magnetic anomaly, Tomb SS, was investigated. Only the uppermost burial layer was reached, which was covered by two large deposits of several hundred intact or fully restorable ceramic vessels. These include various types of Cypriot tableware, as well as imports from the Aegean, Anatolia and the Levant. The preliminary date of these contexts is LC IIA˗B, i.e., roughly the last quarter of the 15th to the last quarter of the 14th century BCE. Since neither tomb has been completely exposed, excavations in the protected area will continue in spring 2021
Tigers at higher elevations outside their range: What does it mean for conservation?. eco.mont (Journal on Protected Mountain Areas Research and Management)|eco.mont Vol. 14 No. 1 14 1|
Nepal’s population of endangered Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris) is on the rise. In recent years, the presence of tigers has been documented at higher elevations. The objective of this study is to explore the possible reasons for the tigers’ presence at the higher elevations. It is critical that these high-altitude habitats for tigers be further explored and protected. The study points out the importance of the Mahabharat range and a longitudinal conservation gradient approach in Nepal. Apart from this, it is imperative to assess the density of tigers and tiger prey in the area. Even though high-altitude ecology may be suitable for tiger growth, the formulation of a high-altitude tiger conservation action plan with effective coordination between stakeholder organizations and concerned departments is of great importance
