Egypt and Kush in Mesopotamian Chronicles. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
This article focuses on African-Mesopotamian relations in general and on how Egypt and Kush (in today’s Sudan) are represented in Mesopotamian chronicles specifically. Mesopotamian chronicles, which belong to a genre that focuses on historiography, contain references to Egypt and Kush in seven different chronicles dating to the Neo-Babylonian period and the Hellenistic period. The results of the study show that Egypt and Kush are not differentiated in the sources; that the references in question deal with military conflicts; and that Egypt appears both in positive and negative terms, thus standing in contrast to the propagandistic genre of Mesopotamian royal inscriptions. Even though Mesopotamian chronicles were primarily a matter for the scholarly elite, these texts provide one piece of the puzzle on how Egypt and Kush were regarded in ancient Mesopotamia

The Great Aletsch Glacier and world-famous peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau make up the core of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch (SAJA), which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, the first Alpine World Heritage designation. The natural and cultural landscape is very diverse due to its climatic differences and high altitudinal gradients. One extraordinary cultural element of the landscape in the UNESCO World Heritage SAJA is the traditional irrigation system. It mainly provides irrigation for meadows and vineyards, creating small-scale and species-rich habitats for animals and plants. As a result of agricultural structural change and workload, the traditional irrigation techniques are endangered and are being replaced by sprinkler systems or, in some cases, abandoned completely. The project Preservation of Traditional Irrigation in the Upper Valais served to detect areas still traditionally irrigated and to discuss challenges, solutions and perspectives with local actors and experts to develop a concrete action plan. Possible solution approaches proposed are: a) financial compensation; b) platform and volunteering; c) institutionalization; d) education and training; e) awareness raising; f) Expert Commission Irrigation Landscape Upper Valais Sun Mountains

The Late Bronze Age presents a peak in the cultural interactions between the different empires of the ancient Near East. Bulk goods and small quantities of luxury products were exchanged between the kings and the local elite over long distances. During the 2019 excavation campaign, such a luxury item was discovered at the site of Pyla-Kokkinokremos in Cyprus: an Egyptian calcite-alabaster drop jar incised with geometric and floral decorations. Spatio-temporal assessment of the hydrological drivers of an active deep-seated gravitational slope deformation: The Vögelsberg landslide in Tyrol (Austria)
Spatio-temporal variations of precipitation are presumed to influence the displacementrate of slow-moving deep-seated landslides by controlling groundwaterrecharge, pore-water pressure and shear strength. Phases of landslide accelerationresponding to long-lasting rainfall and snowmelt events occur under site- and eventspecifictime delays. Assessing groundwater recharge and simultaneous recording oflandslide displacement in a sufficient spatial and temporal resolution is essential todeepen the understanding of mechanisms controlling a landslide’s deformationbehaviour and is indispensable when it comes to identifying and developing targetorientedmitigation strategies. The objective of this study was to assess hydrologicallandslide drivers (solid and liquid precipitation, snowmelt and evapotranspiration) andto investigate their spatio-temporal distribution in the context of movementsrecorded at the Vögelsberg landslide (Tyrol, Austria). Hydrometeorological variableswere simulated using the AMUNDSEN (Alpine MUltiscale Numerical DistributedSimulation ENgine) hydroclimatological model and landslide movements were continuouslymonitored using an automated tracking total station. Area-wide simulatedtime series of available water were used: (i) to separate them into single landslidetriggering hydrometeorological events; (ii) to analyse spatio-temporal patterns ofwater availability per triggering event including individual response times; (iii) todelineate an effective hydrological landslide catchment; and (iv) to identify relationsbetween assessed water input and landslide displacement rate. For the observationperiod from 05-2016 until 06-2019 we identified three distinctive hydrometeorologicalevents causing time-delayed periods of landslide acceleration. Spatio-temporaldifferences in water availability per triggering event result in spatially diverseresponse times varying from 20 to 60 days for rainfall-triggered events and between0 and 8 days for events triggered by snowmelt. Pronounced spatio-temporal differencesof snowmelt within the model domain were identified to offer a unique possibilityto delineate the effective hydrological landslide catchment. While consideringevent-specific time-lags, logarithmic correlations between incoming water and landslidedisplacement rate become apparent

Recent landscape archaeological research on the island of Zakynthos has resulted in the identification of anumber of sites with pottery from the Middle Helladic and the early Mycenaean periods. In this article we will lookat these archaeological materials and at the geographical location of the sites. Zakynthos will then be compared withother parts of western Greece and beyond, in order to identify similarities and differences in material strategies in thelandscape. The analysis will result in a discussion on the intensity of interactions in regions of different scale, in whichZakynthos participated
