Intellectual Resilience – Draft of a New Educational Approach for the Geography Classroom. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 2|
Major crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic put societies to the test. The conjuncture of globalization, with all its challenging transformation processes, social inequality, and the epidemic spread of a new (viral) pathogen has fuelled feelings of uncertainty and insecurity in virtually every part of society, on a global scale. Focusing on learners, this paper proposes ‘intellectual resilience’ as a new educational concept aiming to empower learners to more fully comprehend and navigate global crises. An intellectually resilient person is defined as someone who can use multiple scientific approaches and concepts in a participative, democratically informed way. The aim is to explore the potential of school geography education to support young learners in handling crisis situation

Extracting and Geocoding Locations in Social Media Posts: A Comparative Analysis. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 2|
Geo-social media have become an established data source for spatial analysis of geographic and social processes in various fields. However, only a small share of geo-social media data are explicitly georeferenced, which often compromises the reliability of the analysis results by excluding large volumes of data from the analysis. To increase the number of georeferenced tweets, inferred locations can be extracted from the texts of social media posts. We propose a customized workflow for location extraction from tweets and subsequent geocoding. We compare the results of two methods: DBpedia Spotlight (using linked Wikipedia entities), and spaCy combined with the geocoding methods of OpenStreetMap Nominatim. The results suggest that the workflow using spaCy and Nominatim identifies more locations than DBpedia Spotlight. For 50,616 tweets posted within California, USA, the granularity of the extracted locations is reasonable. However, several directions for future research were identified, including improved semantic analysis, the creation of a cascading workflow, and the need to integrate different data sources in order to increase reliability and spatial accuracy
Der Code civil in der Rechtsprechung der Freien Stadt Krakau (1815–1846). Zwischen französischer und österreichischer Rechtskultur. Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 2 / 2020|
Selected examples from the jurisprudence of the courts of the Free City of Krakow prove that the application of the Code civil was often based on an interpretation of regulations which did not meet the intention and content of the French codification. On the one hand, the courts, through an original interpretation of legal norms, aimed to deliberately circumvent French law in order to weaken its rigor in relation to the rights of women or illegitimate children. On the other hand, the erroneous interpretation of the law showed that the courts were not always able to abandon the way of legal thinking which corresponded to the assumptions of Austrian legislation, but differed from the systemic regulations of the Code civil. An important role in the control of courts over the application of French law was played by the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University. At the request of the parties to court proceedings it checked the compliance with substantive and formal law of two rulings of different court instances on the same content. In the opinions issued, the Law Faculty instructed the courts in such fundamental matters as e.g. the form of legal action for evidentiary purposes (ad probationem)
The Judicial Circle in the Free City of Cracow (1815–1846). Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 2 / 2020|
The subject of the article is the judicial circle in the Free City of Cracow in the years 1815–1846. It reconstructs the political position of the judges of the Court of First Instance, Court of Appeal and Court of Third Instance, adjudicating both in civil and criminal cases, and discusses their rights (remuneration, pension, wearing a uniform) and their obligations, the violation of which resulted in disciplinary and criminal liability. Attention is drawn to the fundamental constitutional principles of judicial independence and independence of the judiciary. It also discusses methods of examining the qualifications of candidates, including examination issues, which covered most areas of civil, commercial, criminal and administrative law, as well as the history of law (including Roman law). Some of the most distinguished employees of the justice system are presented, as are the opinions of witnesses of events concerning its functioning

‘This is a Great Place for Children. Here, They Can Play, Do What They Want, Have Fun and Other Things.’ Mapping Primary School Children’s Everyday Spaces. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 2|
This article presents empirical findings from a learning environment based on education for Spatial Citizenship (Gryl & Jekel, 2012; Schulze et al., 2015) conducted with primary school children (6 to 10 years of age) in the city of Essen, Germany. In workshops comprising three stages, participants used an easy-to-use mapping application to trace significant places and objects in their school surroundings in relation to the workshops’ overall topic of envisioning designs and features of a ‘city for children’. This paper focuses on the analysis of collaborative maps created from children’s perspectives on urban space in their own life-worlds
Die Kompetenzverteilung im Übergang von der österreichischen Monarchie zur Republik Österreich. Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 2 / 2021|
In October 1918, the Republic of (German‐)Austria came into life following the dissolution of the Habsburg Monarchy as a decentralized unitary state, consisting of provinces called Länder. In connection with subsequent decisions of the Provisional National Assembly, the same situation as in the Austrian monarchy arose with regard to the distribution of competences between the state and the Länder − with one major modification regarding the allocation of the state administration, which was now generally transferred to the Länder. Due to the connection of the state administration with the autonomous administration of the Länder, severe transgressions of competences committed by several provincial governments provoked the establishment of a ‘Länderkonferenz’ serving as an ‘infrastructural contact committee’ to resolve discrepancies between the state government and the provincial governments. In connection with the assertion of competences in drafting of the future federal constitution by the Länder, the Länderkonferenz also served at times as a federal forum for constitutional policy‐making
The Destruction of Late Bronze Age Hazor. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
Hazor was one of the most important city states in the Late Bronze Age southern Levant and its fiercely final destruction has been of central scholarly interest for decades. Here, we present a novel perspective, which integrates multiple aspects for the end of Late Bronze Age Hazor. Our results show the complexity of Hazor’s end by integrating the stratigraphic analysis and comprehensive radiocarbon dating together with the study of local, Aegean-type and Egyptian objects from the recent decades of excavation at the site. Ultimately, we offer two different possible scenarios for the destruction of Hazor with regard to the date and the processes that led to the destruction
