No full textThis article introduces the themed section »Movement and Mobility in the Medieval Mediterranean: Changing Perspectives from Late Antiquity to the Long-Twelfth Century«. This series of articles engages with the ongoing debates in historiography on the role of movement and mobility in the socio-political frameworks of medieval societies throughout the Mediterranean world from Iberia to the Near East. The papers introduced here consider a wide range of contacts and exchange from the diplomatic encounters of late antique Byzantium via the exchange of (religious) ideas and spiritual objects in Italy and the Near East to the fundamental mobility of capital, slaves and goods. Rather than reveal a static, ossified and self-contained range of landscapes, this article will argue that there were not only cross-cultural, religious and political contacts but also economic and social connections that fused the Medieval Mediterranean into a heterogenous contact zone of cultures, ideas and products. Using this broader framework of the Mediterranean as a contact zone and border region between and across the longue durée represented by the period from Late Antiquity until the end of the twelfth century allows the contributions to demonstrate movement, not stasis after Rome and the expansion of horizons rather than their restriction
Union Instability and Fertility: A Microsimulation Model for Italy and Great Britain
No full textFamily dynamics are changing in Europe, but only few studies investigate how cohort completed fertility is affected by partnership behaviours and how this has changed over time. We use microsimulation techniques to investigate the effect of the increasing prevalence of union dissolution on completed fertility levels in Italy and Great Britain, two countries with very different systems of value. We find that the net effect of union instability is to decrease fertility (by about 0.5 children for Italian and 0.2 to 0.4 children for British cohorts) but the magnitude of the difference depends on the timing of union formation and separation. As expected, re-partnering produces more children in new partnerships if the separation occurs earlier. Nonetheless, it is only if separation takes place after the second birth and if all women re-partner that additional childbearing would almost compensate for births lost due to union disruption

No full textWhile Thailand has achieved high levels of economic growth in recent decades, poverty at the local level has been increasing. Indicators of human development at the national level often mask the differences in well-being across communities. When responding to the need for sustainable development research, the heterogeneity of a population should be emphasised to ensure that no one is left behind. The Years of Good Life (YoGL) is a well-being indicator that demonstrates the similarities and differences between subpopulations in a given sociocultural context over time. The data used in this analysis were collected from Chiang Rai and Kalasin, which are provinces located in regions of Thailand with high poverty rates. Our main results indicate that the remaining years of good life (free from physical and cognitive limitations, out of poverty and satisfied with life) at age 20 among the sample population were 26 years for women and 28 years for men. The results varied depending on the indicators applied in each dimension of YoGL. Our analysis of the YoGL constituents indicated that cognitive functioning was the dimension that decreased the years of good life the most in the main specification. This study demonstrates the applicability of the YoGL methodology in investigating the wellbeing of subpopulations

No full textThis essay provides a brief description of the city of Rome around the middle of the 15th century by focusing on the most relevant aspects of everyday life as well as on the institutions, societies and economic structures that Frederick III – albeit superficially – encountered during his brief stay in Rome. The study first analyses the “city of stone”, namely the physical aspect of the city. When the emperor arrived in Rome, the city was still deeply marked by decay and abandonment as a result of the long absence of the pope and of the Great Schism. The study moves on to describe the “living city”, the socio-economic and political structure of Rome’s cosmopolitan population by highlighting the social stratification of the Roman cives (including barons, the urban aristocracy and the working class) and mainly focusing on the foreign communities living in Rome. In fact, the high demographic growth, which took place in the 15th century and whose effects were already visible around the middle of the century, is primarily due to the foreign communities settling down in the city, who used to work either within the Papal Curia or as artisans and merchants in Rome. Besides Florentines and Tuscans, the community of the “Teutons” stood out among the forenses. The Confraternity and the Hospice of S. Maria dell’Anima was their main point of reference. Its Liber Fraternitatis also contains the names of Frederick III, his wife and other personalities who accompanied the emperor throughout his journey
