State of the Art: A Family-Related Foresight Approach
This state-of-the-art report discusses the substantive and methodological backgroundfor the construction and application of a family-related foresight method. Thesubstantive part includes a brief presentation of two preceding family-orientedforesight methods: one run by the OECD in 2012 (producing two scenarios) and theother by the FamilyPlatform (producing four scenarios), the forerunners of theFamiliesAndSocieties project. The methodological background focuses onmicrosimulation and agent-based models, two quantitative models that will serve asnew tools for foresight. Their application is considered in a systematic frameworkalong with other standard foresight tools such as workshops and focus groups

Future Fertility in Low Fertility Countries
This paper discusses results of the global survey of experts on the future of low fertility in low-fertility countries. The survey was coordinated by the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital as a part of an effort to produce global argument- based population projections by age, sex and level of education. First we give an overview of fertility changes in major low-fertility regions. Next we outline main theoretical arguments and review a wide range of factors contributing to fertility change and variation in contemporary low-fertility settings. Subsequently, we present survey results based on 184 assessments of over 170 experts analysing 41 countries with currently low or around- replacement fertility and Israel. These experts provided forecasts of period total fertility rate (TFR) in 2030 and 2050, estimated 80% confidence interval of their forecast and assessed the validity and potential impact on fertility of 46 factors. We also compare expert-derived projections of the TFR trends with the forecasts formulated by the UN World Population Prospects in 2010. The survey results in combination with the feedback provided by the invited experts then serve as a basis for formulating a set of projection scenarios for all low fertility countries up until 2050, which are additionally expanded (in a simpler form) through 2200. We present these scenarios and discuss past changes in fertility differences by level of education and their potential future trends in main regions. Presented analyses and projections indicate that a global convergence of fertility to around replacement level, envisioned in the UN projections, appears unlikely. Continuing differentiation combined with partial convergence in fertility towards lower levels is suggested as a more plausible scenario, with East Asia (including China) as well as Russia expected to have sustained very low fertility below 1.5 through 2050

Towards inclusive environmental governance in the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve, Morocco. eco.mont (Journal on Protected Mountain Areas Research and Management)|eco.mont Vol. 13 special issue 2021|
Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve (ABR) in Morocco was established in 1998. Today the reserve covers 2.5 million hectares and more than 3 million people and, as such, it has been a complex social-ecological system to govern. Authors draw on postnormal conservation science and environmental governance studies to investigate environmental governance processes within the ABR and shed light on their outcomes and challenges to date. First, authors analyse how Moroccan institutions are managing this vast territory. Second, we look at perceptions of an extended peer community of decision-makers. This research adds an empirical case study to the North African region and addresses two main weaknesses of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves worldwide: 1) effective governance and 2) shortcomings in their implementation. Through an ethnographic approach, we are able to point out how low strategic priority and a weak political will regarding the ABR may be hindering inclusive environmental governance. The authors suggest some key aspects for improving the existing governance system; various baseline needs and barriers that may be addressed in advance; a set of drivers, and several proposals for inclusive governance in the ABR. This study should prompt academia, policy- and decision-makers to identify and enhance synergies that allow for a shared vision of their territory

Aspects of Gender Mainstreaming of Family and Work in Austria
OECD regularly carries out surveys in its member states to assess their recent economicperformance. For the preparation of the 2015 survey focusing on gender mainstreaming offamily and work arrangements in challenging times, an OECD team conducted a “factfindingmission” at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna. The mission team approachedseveral researchers and policy makers in order to discuss the recent situation in Austria. The team circulated a strategy note, including a detailed outline of the planned survey, aiming at stimulating scientific and policy-relevant exchanges. In order to discuss theoutline of the mission document concerning fertility, migration and the triangularinteraction between labour market participation, well-being and parenthood/fertility, Isummarized insights from empirical research for Austria based a review of the existingliterature. This summary was provided to the OECD team and constituted the major inputfor discussion
