The Physicality of Justice in Aristophanes’ Wasps: Bodies, Objects and the Material Staging of Athenian Law. Akten der Gesellschaft für Griechische und Hellenistische Rechtsgeschichte|(28) Symposion 2019 Akten der Gesellschaft für griechische und hellenistische Rechtsgeschichte Band 28|
The aim of this paper is to study legal references in Aristophanes’ Waspsfrom a perspective based on the importance of the bodies and objects involved inlitigation. Since comedy as a genre is pervaded by bodily contact and sensoryexperiences, I am interested in exploring the materiality of subjects and things, theirrelationship and the potentiality of human and non-human contact when legalactivities are performed on stage. All these physical displays suggest that a study ofgestures and expressive actions in the play may contribute to a more comprehensiveunderstanding of the non-verbal dynamics involved in the Athenian judicialmachinery

The Low Mortality of a Learned Society
This study addresses the mortality of the members of a learned society. Followingthe literature on the social gradient of mortality, members of a learned society shouldexhibit much lower death rates than other social groups. We use biographical recordsfrom the members of the Austrian Academy of Sciences between 1847 and 2005 andcompare their mortality to Austrian life table death rates of the entire population andthe population with tertiary education only, respectively. We find that the membersof the Austrian Academy of Sciences experience far fewer deaths than if they weresubject to the average Austrian life table mortality. The mortality differential evenpersists when comparing to the Austrian population with tertiary education, thoughto a smaller extent. Moreover, the mortality differential between the members of theAustrian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian population has widened over time, particularly since the mid-20th century
Towards a Catholic North America? Projections of Religion in Canada and the US Beyond the Mid-21st Century
Religion and religiosity are important identity markers, and changes in a country’s religiouscomposition may affect its culture, value orientations and policies. In recent decades theProtestants in both the US and Canada have lost their absolute population majority. In thepresent study we investigate the future of the religious composition in both the US and Canadajointly until the 2060s taking into consideration changes due to demographic forces, the leveland composition of migration, fertility differentials and intergenerational religioustransmissions. The joint focus on both the US and Canada allows one to better understand thecommonalities and differences between these two nations which are tightly knit in terms ofgeography, politics, economics and culture. The projections reveal that North America shouldnot become Catholic by mid-century but close to, with an increasing importance of minoritiesin the religious landscape

Estimates of Global Bilateral Migration Flows by Gender Between 1960 and 2015
Measures of international migration flows are often limited in both availability andcomparability. This paper aims to address these issues at a global level using an indirect methodto estimate country to country migration flows from more readily available bilateral stock data.Estimates are obtained over five and ten-year periods between 1960 and 2015 by gender, providing a comprehensive picture of past migration patterns. The estimated total amount ofglobal international migrant flows is shown to generally increase over the 50 year time frame. The intensity of migration flows over five and ten-year periods fluctuate at around 0.65 and1.25 percent of the global population respectively, with a noticeable spike during the 1990-95period. Gender imbalances in the estimated flows between selected regions were found to exist, such as recent movements into oil rich Gulf States from South Asia. Global migration during2010-15 fell in comparison previous periods. The sensitivity of flow estimates to alternativeinput stock and demographic data as well as changes in political geography are explored.Estimates are validated through comparisons with existing reported migration flows statistics
Learning by Doing and Learning from Others in Contraceptive Technology
This paper provides a theoretical and empirical investigation of the impact of social learningon modern contraceptive prevalence. A theory is developed where own or neighbors’ experienceincreases the benefit from using modern contraceptives by reducing the uncertaintyregarding contraceptive efficacy. Empirical results from the Indonesian Family Life Surveysuggest that the more own experience of modern contraceptives a woman has she is morelikely to use those methods. However, neighbors’ experience does not have a significant impacton one’s current usage of contraceptives. One explanation of these findings is that theinformation on contraceptive efficacy, or failure rates is likely to contain much noise whenwomen communicate with each other. These findings contrast those of recent literature, which show the adoption of contraceptives by one’s social contacts has positive impact onone’s own adoption
The Future of International Migration: Developing Expert-Based Assumptions for Global Population Projections
This paper explores alternative future trajectories of international migration by applying amultiregional flow model to a new set of estimates of global bilateral migration flowsdeveloped by the second author. The innovations in population projections presented hereare threefold: first, the projections are based on new flow estimates that are comparable atthe world level rather than commonly used net migration measures; second, a set ofalternative expert-based what-if scenarios is developed and a continuation of current trendsuntil the year 2060 as the medium variant is assumed rather than assuming a convergenceto zero net migration; third projections are carried out using directional migrationprobabilities in a multiregional cohort-component framework, where populations of allcountries are projected simultaneously. A discussion of the baseline data, assumptions andmodel specifications is followed by a summary of key result on projected numbers offuture migrants
