Gender Job Satisfaction Paradox in Europe: The Role of Differences in Job Characteristics and Their Evaluation

    No full text
This study uses the latest pan-European job satisfaction data – EU-SILC data from 2018 – to examine whether gender differences in job characteristics scores can be associated with higher job satisfaction among women. The results confirm higher female job satisfaction, but this difference is entirely due to gender differences in job characteristics, mainly higher shares in health and education, with higher job-content motivation for work. The analysis of gender differences in evaluations of job characteristics shows that for men, a permanent job, higher wages, and longer working hours are much more important determinants of job satisfaction than for women, which is consistent with their traditional role as “breadwinners”. On the other hand, the use of skills at work and job content are more important determinants of job satisfaction for women than for men. Moreover, men compensate for poorer working conditions in low-skilled occupations by finding these jobs compatible with their gender roles

Impact of Continuing Education on Stable Employment and Wages of Men and Women in Serbia

    Get PDF
This paper examines whether continuing education and training contribute to overall job security and to narrowing the gender wage gap, thereby mitigating the potential effects of employer discrimination. Data from the Serbian Survey on Income and Living Conditions are used, focusing on 2020 and estimating wage regressions. The main results show that participation in continuing education and training has a positive effect on wages and contributes to reducing the wage gap, especially for individuals who were previously unemployed and participated in some form of additional training. This paper contributes to understanding the importance of training and its impact on employment stability and workers' wages in the post-transition economy. The findings presented in this paper are advisory to both policymakers and management. In general, it can be stated that trained employees are better suited to do tasks and, especially if they are satisfied with the knowledge acquired in the company, contribute to a stable environment that makes it easier for them to meet the demands of competition. On the other hand, this implies the empirically confirmed assumption that competition may be negatively correlated with employer discrimination. However, employee participation in continuing education and training in Serbia is still below the optimal level

Digital Competences as a Precondition for an Inclusive Digital Economy - Is There a Gender Gap Among Persons with Disabilities in Serbia?

    Get PDF
Digital labour platforms provide lower barrier access to employment and income generation for all, having a great potential to create almost equal opportunities for persons with different forms of disabilities to engage in the labour market while contributing to their inclusive employment. However, to be able to provide adequate services to their distant employers, remote workers must possess a sufficient level of digital competences, skills and knowledge. Accordingly, the paper seeks to assess the level of digital competences of persons with disabilities in Serbia and to establish whether there are any gender-related differences in that regard. The results obtained aim to identify the gap between the existing and required competences for starting an entrepreneurial venture or finding a job using freelance platforms. The paper’s main contribution reflects the fact that digital competences of persons with disabilities in Serbia in the context of their self-employment are a topic insufficiently explored in the existing literature

Studying the interrelationship between quality management system and intellectual capital

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between the quality management system (QMS) and the intellectual capital (IC) of a company. The importance of IC results from its potential to generate value, especially in the knowledge-based economy. It reflects unique organizational resources which are hard to acquire, imitate and replace. Such resources are most often grouped using trichotomous categorization into human, structural, and relational capital. As there is scarce literature examining the interrelationship between QMS and IC, this study aims to explore the way QMS enhances IC, but also how IC impacts QMS. The role of motivation for implementing a formal QMS is examined in light of IC efficiency and value-added based on IC. The results indicate a mutually reinforcing role of QMS and IC, leading to superior company performance

    Get PDF
The innovative capacity of an organization is determined by numerous factors which operate in the external and internal environment. Without diminishing the role and importance of external environmental factors, the focus of this paper is the analysis of the impact of the organizational structure and culture on the innovative behavior of organizations. The paper starts from the assumption that business innovation is under the strong influence of the above-mentioned elements of the internal environment. The research results indicate that this influence can be positive or negative depending on the dimensions of the organizational structure and the values promoted by the organizational culture. The findings in the paper can contribute to the existing literature to interpret the nature of the relationship between the organizational structure and culture and the innovative ability of a company, as well as to find a way to improve the existing business innovation practice based on the creation of the organizational design that encourages workplace creativity and innovation. The desk research method has been used in this research. The papers and publications from scientific journals that addressed similar topics, along with other specialized literature focusing on the impact of organizational design on organizational innovativeness, have been used as data sources
