A system for the evaluation of environmental risk for lagoon arachaeological sites

    Get PDF
The project Archeorisk is presented. The objective is to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) for the safeguard and the management of the underwater archaeological patrimony in the Lagoon of Venice. The DSS has been completed in the form of a software prototype working as an extension of a geographic informative system. The DSS allows to evaluate the entity, the type and the distribution of the decay risk to which the lagoon archaeological sites are subjected. Its development has requested the acquisition of experimental data on the decay of the findings and about the main causes. In particular, the decay of ceramic and wooden objects has been studied. The system, that can be adapted to different environmental and archaeological contexts, is destined to the Archaeological Superintendence and permits to integrate the safeguard of the cultural heritage with that of the natural environment

    Projecting databases and information systems

    No full text
A systematic approach in the project of a database allows to treat information, apparently complex, in an exhaustive, efficient and effective way. The reference methodologies are now consolidated in the field of software engineering and they found direct application in different applicative contexts where the managing and aggregation processes and the analyses of big sets of data are critic. The base model for the logic analysis of the structures and the set of the constructions useful to data representations refer to the so-called Relational Model. The philosophy of information extraction is reconducted to the manipulation of Tables containing data instances and to simple Cartesian products

Historical anamnesis and diagnostic investigation on the oil on panel painting “Madonna with Child and Saints Jerome and Catherine from Siena” ascribed to Domenico Beccafumi (1486-1551)

    No full text
The diagnostic analyses executed on the painting “Madonna con Bambino e Santi Girolamo e Caterina da Siena”, ascribed to Beccafumi by Zeri in 1995, and datable, for stylistic considerations, in the early thirty years in 1500, allowed to analyse the executive technique, to confirm the attribution to the Sienese painter and to evaluate the preservation conditions. Diagnostic analyses have been executed by: reflectography, videomicroscopy, X-rays radiography, X-rays fluorescence spectroscopy. Analyses with gas cromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) have been executed on micro-fragments to investigate the nature of binders. The painting, not in very good conservation conditions, shows a significant degradation process in act. Effects of old and radical cleanings appear evident: these, probably, intended to solve some problems in the Beccafumi’s pictorial technique: he used to paint very quickly, leaving typical colour drippings. The main damages, in any case, seem to be caused by old and significant wood deformation

The industrial research project: “Blu-Archeosys – Innovative Technologies and Advanced Systems as Support in Underwater Archaeology”

    No full text
The reasons of the research about new technologies as support in naval and underwater archaeology or, more generally, in waters archaeology are various and described in this work, where the characteristics of the research project “BLU-ARCHEOSYS – Innovative Technologies and Advanced SYStems as Support in Underwater ARCHaeology” are illustrated. This industrial research project faces problems regarding innovative technologies and instruments in waters archaeology and it comprehends synergic steps and joined works among skilled professionals that have the competences to interpret qualitative and/or quantitative data within an artistic – historical and technical – historical study, also with the involvement of various public and private institutions. The BLUARCHEOSYS project has, in fact, the objective to create technologies that have a reply in underwater archaeology and contemporaneously in other sectors. In particular, starting from the methodological way that spans from the discovery in underwater or subaerial environment to the collocation of the objects in museums, the intent is to support the different methodological stages with specific tools and innovative technologies. The education project, presented to the Ministry with the research one, is articulated in the different branches of artistic-historical character, of the management, normative and operative character, and of the technical-diagnostic-material-preservative character. The professionals will have not only theoretical knowledge about standard and consolidated technologies, but they will be also experts about methodologies, in particular the diagnostic ones, that put in field the innovative tools evaluated in the project, with consequent competitive advantage in the working field, more and more demanding specific sector competences

Etno-anthropological study on an Andin mummy preserved in the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia (preliminary investigation)

    No full text
This work describes the results obtained from interdisciplinary studies carried out on an Andin mummy preserved in the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia and entrusted to the Department of Histories and Methods for Cultural Heritage Preservation of the University of Bologna where it was subjected to careful museum-graphical, anthroposcopic, radiographic and topographic researches and to X-Rays Fluorescence spectroscopy investigations. These preliminary investigations gave important results and, for the forthcoming work, deeper investigations have been planned, together with hypothesis about possible restoration interventions

    Regarding Troy

    No full text
“Troy” by Wolfgang Petersen (U.S.A. 2004), a very discussed movie, does not have to be considered as an act of violence towards Homer. In our opinion, it is a peculiar, sometimes provoking, reinterpretation of the Trojan myth, which is seen from an antimilitaristic and anti-imperialistic point of view. The Homeric text and, in general, the Greek epic tradition are sometimes forced, but the Homeric spirit is not completely betrayed. A comparison of the movie with the classical sources to which it is inspired shows that the screenplay is based on a documentation which is much more accurate than it could appear

Geotechnical problems in the consolidation of buildings of historical interest

    Get PDF
The structural damages of ancient structures and monuments are very often due to differential settlements of their foundations, or to other effects of soil-structure interaction. A correct analysis of the damaging phenomena should be based on a sound geotechnical engineering approach, which requires expensive and long investigations on the mechanical characteristics of the foundation soils. However the last decade’s progress in construction technologies has offered a new and flexible kind of solutions to consolidate foundation structures that are often quicker and less expensive than a serious and complete geotechnical study. Therefore very often one of the above-mentioned solutions is simply adopted avoiding any previous study. The paper briefly illustrates the main negative effects of that approach, referring to some interesting case histories

The “Cultural Heritage” under the patronage and the protection of the bishops. The late antique model

    Get PDF
Radiating from the episcopal palace to embrace the city as a whole – the city as cultural heritage par excellence – and from late antique Ravenna across the entire ecumenical domain of the Mediterranean, the bishop’s patronage and protection cannot but extend beyond the patrimony of places of worship and sacred objects per se. The bishop is the pivot of urban religious unity, the guarantor of its civil continuity: building, rebuilding, innovating, always taking as his starting point the structure that most embodies that “civicness” – the city walls, which Roman law held to be “sanctified”, and which the bishops resanctify the Christian way. The author therefore highlights the bishop’s responsibility towards his church and his city, along the two “political” lines of Romano-Hellenism: civic evergetism and legal tutelage over goods and infrastructure, including weakened public infrastructure. The bishop’s role (as patron, protector and guarantor) should in any case be seen in the context of a providential quest for salvation which acquires concrete form in the well ordered earthly city
