    Georadar Techniques in the historical and architectonical field: the case study of the sanctuary of Madonna in Campagna in Guanzate (CO)

    oai:journals.unibo.it:article/469The artistic and architectonic heritage on the Italian territory is huge. The uniqueness of the goods, their variety and the historical mean are often related to their age and to the environment in which their are located. From this point of view, both historical and architectonic and archeological studies, especially involving churches and religious buildings in general are often aimed at evaluating the architectonic development of the buildings during the centuries, looking for pieces or elements of the previous buildings or part of their structure (floor, graves, walls, etc.). To support historical considerations, could be indispensable to investigate the "dark side" of a building, i.e. to detect the occurrance of caves, underground archeological elements or structures like wall foundations. The Georadar or GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) system is the most advanced non-invasive technique aimed at searching underground elements and structures, and it can be widely used in the historical and archeological field. This technique allows to get detailed plans including information about the location, depth and size of the objects, goods or rests of them, making it possible, crossing information coming from the existing plans and the historical, historiographic and archivistic data, to rebuild plans of already forgotten buried structures, helping experts to rearrange the oldest events of Madonna in Campagna in Guanzate is presented, and these techniques have allowed supporting very complex hypotheses about the modifications of the religious building during the centuries; theories which up to now didn't have enough support from the available historical documentation

    Diagnostic and historical-iconographic study on frescos in Palazzo Maioli (Ravenna)

    The pictures discovered in Ravenna at Maioli Palace (Ravenna) have been subjected to an analytical survey, both during and after the works of a restoration performed at the Restoration Laboratory. This building, set during the time of the Venetian rule in the town of Romagna (1447-1509), belonged for centuries to the noble Maioli Family, that had come from Faenza. The walls, taken into consideration, show four "pictured levels", i.e. four different times about when the four pictures have been performed. The first one refers to the construction period of the building, the second one is the one studied, the third one can be connected to the Seventeenth century, according to the stylistic details of the Pompeian period. While the forth one is dated back to the end of the Eighteenth century, since the decorative part is typical of that time (with "decorative part" we refer to the "stencil" decorations, i.e. applications of pictures, inks or colours by means of special little masks). The experimental study carried out on two kinds of pictured samples (chosen according to their kind of pigments i.e.: yellow and black) as focused on: the colorimetry, in order to determine the components of the chromaticity; the fluorescence spectrometry to X ray, to characterize the pigments used; the thermal analysis with the goal of finding out the kind of plaster; the video-microscopy to get documentary and cognitive purposes. A systematic analysis of the pictures was justified both by the will of finding the pictorial technique of the painter, and by the wish to be able to date them back to the period of their creation, since at the moment, there is no documentation about these issues

    The goal of this short communication is to analyse, through the vicissitudes experienced by our Civil Code during the last years because of the springing up of the regulations strictly connected to it, and of its relevant set of erudite and jurisdictional interpretations, and the risks that a codicillary compilation can run of, in case the lawmaker does not follow the guidelines got by the age-old jurisdictional science experience. The above-said analyse, besides underlining a general problem, aims at expressing a warning and a call for protection about the more sectorial field of the Landscape and Cultural Heritage legislation, according to the nomenclature adopted by the Civil Code issued through the Legislative Decree N. 42, dated on January 22nd, 2004

    Phryne, probably the most renowned Greek courtesan (especially because of the famous trial where she was defended by the public speaker Hyperides), was a source of artistic inspiration not only for the Greek sculptor Praxiteles, but also for modern painters, such as Angelica Kauffman, J.M.W. Turner and the French pompiers. In the XX century, Phryne has been "discovered" also by filmmakers. After the successful 'Altri tempi' by A. Blasetti (1952) where a gorgeous Gina Lollobrigida starred as a modern Phryne, Mario Bonnard directed a péplum entitled "Frine, cortigiana d'Oriente" (1953) starring Elena Kleus. Spite of the absurd title, probably chosen by the production with commercial purposes, the movie is not totally lacking in historical interest: Phryne is represented as a war refugee and as a fierce enemy of Alexander the Great, who had destroyed Thebae, chief town of the region where Phryne was born. As a matter of fact, a main role in the screenplay and direction appears to be due to young Sergio Leone

    The dantesque code, "Phillipps 9589" study on the state of conservation and microclimatic monitoring of the preservation environment

    This research deals with the Dante Code, catalogued at the Library of the Dante Centre of the "Frati Minori Conventuali"of Ravenna such as manuscript n. 2 and known to the international scientific community with the code: "Phillipps 9589". In detail, the study of the Code has taken into consideration the historical-artistic, diagnostic-material and environmental aspects, with reference to the analytics description and to the excutive techniques, to the characterization of the constituent materials and to the evaluation of the restoration state in relation to the microclimatic parameters of its environmental collocation. According to this, some diagnostic techniques have been carried out in order to highlight the "scriptio inferior" and to create alteration and degradation areas, therefore the aim of creating a documentation based on a digital support has been expressed, with the purpose of finding out the causes of decay and of a possible work of restoration. At last, the microclimatic monitoring has completed the analysis of the manuscript-environment system, coming at a reliable and objective evaluation of the current situation and condition

    An acoustical survey about the Sanctuary of Altavilla Milicia (Palermo)

    This study aims at using the science and the technique, known nowadays, at the service of the Liturgy and of the holy architecture. In addition to this, its second goal is to investigate completely, on some general acoustic aspects that can be founded inside liturgical rooms, without overlooking the historical-architectural aspects regarding the difference "kinds" of manufactures and materials in relation to the specific liturgical needs. According to this, an interesting simulation of sound diffusion inside the Sanctuario of Altavilla Milicia, defined by the Cardinal S. De Giorgi "the first and most notorious Marian place of veneration belonging to the Church of Palermo", was performed. By means of this simulation, the acoustic parameters of the ecclesial room were taken, in compliance to the standards UNI EN ISO 3382/1997 (Measurements of enclosed environments Reverberation Time with reference to other acoustic parameters)

    Archaeology and public works: an example from Iran

    The contrast, often dramatic, between the needs of the economic development in the protection of our cultural heritage concerns mainly those countries which are endowed with a glorious past full of historical remains, among them there is Iran as well. In this country, one of the fields that stands for one of the main risk for the protection of the cultural heritage is represented by the ambitious plan to build several dams in order to solve the country water and energy problems. The author shows one of the project worked out by the Iranian Office for the Cultural Heritage, whose goal is to cope with such emergencies. This project refers to archaeological surveys carried out in the area which should be flooding by the Sinvand dam, not so far from the ancient centre of Pasargade, in the Fars area: this project presents an additional interest since it is based on a international collaboration totally new for the Moslem Republic. An "archaeological mission" of the Ravenian branche of the Alma Mater Studiorum (Facoltà di Conservazione dei Beni Culturali), shas taken part to this valuable program, and as explored two rural settlements of Achemenide and Post-achemenide Age (VIth-Ist century B.C.) age, in collaboration with the Iranian Centre for the Archaeological Researches. The results of these three excavations performed, represent the first proof of the region occupation belonging to this period, outside the big dynastic complexes of palaces
