Trialled IndoDairy Focus Farms as An Extension Approach for Smallholder Dairy Farmers in West Java Province, Indonesia

This paper details how the IndoDairy Project fostered a sense of community and shared learning by trialling a Focus Farm as a new extension approach. The selection process was collaborative, with two farmers successfully passing the rigorous processes. These processes included an interview on their motivation, verification through a farm visit, assessment by comparing the strengths and weaknesses among all candidates, and confirmation on the agreement as a chosen focus farmer. The chosen farmers also had the opportunity to select their own Support Farmers group, which comprised around 3-5 people. The Project Team, a key facilitator in the trial, recommended experts as the Advisory Group, who were selected adjustably based on their expertise to support the implementation of technology interventions. In total, there were ten farmers and seven advisors involved. The Focus Farm had six monthly meetings to monitor and update the farm condition and then discuss what works well and what needs improvement. The project facilitated farmers to trial planting high-quality forages and making silage from these forages. Moreover, the Project also facilitated laboratory analyses for samples of soil, forages, concentrates, and composts they used when planting the forages. Looking at the laboratory results, farmers learned about nutrition balance from local feed resources. Lastly, Open Day aimed to share experiences and lessons learned about being a Focus Farm with more farmers and stakeholders, such as farmer-to-farmer learning

Modelling the Relationship between Rice Price, Rice Production, Exchange Rate, and Rice Import in Indonesia

Rice is a strategic food commodity for Indonesia. Most Indonesians, 95 percent consume rice as their staple food. However, Indonesia still imports rice to fulfil its domestic rice needs. Dependence on imports is neither good for the short term nor the long term. The purpose of this study is to see the relationship of rice price, rice production, exchange rate to Indonesia's rice import. The data used is time series data with monthly frequency from January 2019 to December 2023 taken from ITC Trade Map, Central Statistic Agency, and Bank Indonesia. The analysis method uses a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) approach that can provide short-term and long-term information through several tests. The results showed that in the long run the exchange rate and rice production have a negative influence on rice imports. While in the short term, the variables that affect rice imports are the import variable itself and the price of rice in the previous 2 periods, as well as rice production in 1 previous period. The significant influence of rice production requires the government to pay attention to the stock and the amount of imports in balance. Exchange rate, rice price, and rice production variables respond relatively quickly to rice imports. The rice import variable has a large enough proportion in influencing itself followed by the exchange rate, and rice production which has a greater influence each period.

The digital transformation of auction market management plays a crucial role in addressing the high volume of chili peppers and mitigating potential inefficiencies and inaccuracies in operational processes. However, several challenges persist in implementing this transformation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the process of transitioning auction market management from conventional to digital. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, insights were obtained from auction market managers representing five distinct groups in Kulon Progo Regency. Data collection methods included focus group discussions (FGDs), observation, and in-depth interviews. The results showed varying levels of readiness for digital adoption across the markets, with Tani Rejo Auction Market leading in digital technology utilization. Key factors influencing the pace and success of this transformation included institutional dynamics, leadership capabilities, and human resource preparedness. However, persistent farmers perceptions regarding the potential adverse impacts of digital pricing on livelihoods remained a barrier. This study outlined a phased transformation process, comprising initial communication, goal setting, system analysis, implementation of digital applications, training, socialization, evaluation, and follow-up. In addition, support from stakeholders, particularly the Agriculture Office and Bank Indonesia (BI), was identified as crucial in facilitating farmers and traders through the digitalization process, typically improving market efficiency and benefiting all stakeholders

The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian candlenut oil exports in three major market countries (the United States, Singapore, and India) using a quantitative and comparative approach. The data used in this study are from 2016 to 2023. The time series data analysis methods used are Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA), and Trade Balance Index (TBI). Based on the RCA index calculation, the average RCA value of Indonesian candlenut oil is above 1. This means that Indonesian candlenut oil has a comparative advantage in the United States, Singapore, and India markets. The average RSCA index calculation shows that Indonesian candlenut oil has optimal competitiveness in the Singapore and India markets. Meanwhile, in the United States market, Indonesian candlenut oil does not have a comparative advantage. The average TBI calculation indicates that Indonesian candlenut oil is a high export commodity in the United States and Singapore markets, while in the Indian market, Indonesian candlenut oil has an export specialization but is still in the growth stage. Potential markets such as India, Singapore, and the United States deserve further development to optimize export profits. Dissemination of technology to improve the quality of candlenut oil to higher grades is also necessary to compete with competing countries, thereby increasing candlenut oil exports

Are Official Statistics Underexploited by Researchers and Policymakers? The Case of Agriculture Sector in Indonesia

This study is intended to evaluate the utilization of official statistics for academic research as well as for policymaking in agriculture sector in Indonesia.  To achieve the goal a conceptual framework of the relationship among official statistics, academic research, and policymaking was constructed.  The intensity of official statistics use for academic research was examined by analyzing the content of 7814 articles published in all 47 scientific journals officially affiliated with the Indonesian Society of Agricultural Economics (PERHEPI), 1978-2023.  It is found that the majority of the articles (62.6%) did not use BPS data. Furthermore, in the last two decades the utilization of secondary data for academic research papers tends to decrease, from 55.7% of the total articles published in 2004-2013 to 42.4% in 2014-2023. These results of calculation and other quantitative analyses were shown to 80 prominent resource persons for evaluation.  The majority of the respondents assessed that the level of utilization of BPS data was low or very low.  The factors that determine the level of utilization are relevance, accessibility, preference, and quality of the data.  The respondents also identified the needs to solve the problems of communication, collaboration, and coordination among the stakeholders of the ecosystem (official statistics agency, academia, and policymakers) to improve the functioning of the ecosystem of data utilization.  These findings are potentially beneficial for providing points of consideration in public discourses including those for revising the statistics law (UU Statistik) that has been undertaken by lawmakers in the Indonesian parliament (DPR) since 2023

Investigating Risk of Organic Rice Production in Kapanewon Prambanan: Comparative Study with Non-Organic Rice Farming

The transition from conventional farming to organic continues to increase over time. Organic farming, especially organic rice, is becoming something that farmers are interested in because of higher prices and increased consumer demand for organic food products. However, the transition to conventional farming will eventually be followed by the emergence of risks in farming production. This study investigates the factors influencing the production and production risks of organic and non-organic rice farming in Sleman Regency. A total of 45 farmers were sampled in this study, which was determined by purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out by interview method. The Just and Pope approach of production risk is used in analyzing the determinants of production and production risk. The analysis results show that the membership period in farmer groups, land area, education, and manure significantly affects farming production. At the same time, organic rice farming is proven to produce higher production than non-organic. The factor that significantly increases production risk is the length of membership in farmer groups. Farmers who join farmer groups have the potential to face higher production risks. This research implies that it is important for the government to provide support by empowering farmer groups to support organic rice farming. Intensive assistance can be carried out to ensure that the role of the chairperson and members of the farmer group functions optimally

This study aimed to explore the roles of Agrosilvopasture, MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise) Incubation, and financial literacy in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in rural areas of Indonesia. The study procedures were carried out from April to September 2023 in Pagar Alam City using indigenous communities and stakeholders associated with customary forest management, comprising 100 intentionally selected respondents. Subsequently, the Slovin formula was used to determine the number of respondents, who were then selected using a purposive sampling method. The relationships among variables, including Implementation of Agrosilvopasture (X1), MSME Incubation (X2), Financial Literacy (M), and SDGs (Y), were tested. Data obtained were then analyzed using the Partial Least Squares-SmartPLS. The results of path coefficient analysis showed that Agrosilvopasture had a significant negative influence on financial literacy but a positive impact on SDGs. In addition, MSME incubation yielded a favorable impact on both financial literacy and SDGs. Mediation testing validated that financial literacy served as a mediator in the relationship between Agrosilvopasture and the examined outcomes. Based on the results, financial literacy, Agrosilvopasture implementation, and MSME incubation were crucial for achieving SDGs in rural areas. These holistic approaches offered promising pathways to achieve various SDGs, with financial literacy playing an essential role in enhancing the effectiveness of the strategies.

This study aimed to examine the influential factors that lead to the profitability of Tuzamurane Cyeza Cooperative members in Muhanga District, Rwanda. The assessment was carried out with a survey method using 120 respondents who were selected using purposive sampling. The respondents comprised 60 cooperative members and 60 non-cooperative members who were maize farmers, while 6 local leaders and staff of Tuzamurane Cyeza Cooperative were used as key informants. Data were then collected using questionnaires and interviews, followed by assessment using profitability calculation and multiple regression analysis. The assessment was carried out to analyze the effect of the independent variables (price of maize seeds, price of fertilizers, price of pesticides, wage of labor, maize production, and land lease price) on the dependent variable (the profitability of cooperative members of Tuzamurane Cyeza). The results showed that the profitability of 60 members was 13.8%, while a value of 4.9% was obtained for non-cooperative members. The value of the F-Critical (2.26) was less than the F-calculated (7.200) and the P-value (0.009) was below the significant level (0.05). This showed that the model developed in this study could be used in predicting the contribution of independent variables to the dependent variable. This study also showed that 1 coefficient (maize production) had a positive relationship with Tuzamurane Cyeza Cooperative members, while 5 coefficients (price of maize seeds, price of fertilizers, price of pesticides, wages of labor, land lease price) had an inverse association. Based on the results, all independent variables had an impact on the profitability

The recovery process following the 2004 mega-disaster and the Covid-19 pandemic have significant implications for the dynamics of change and community resilience in Banda Aceh. A resilient community is characterized by the ability to adapt to various threat risks, including volatile market conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate livelihood assets in Banda Aceh and the influence on households vulnerability to fluctuation in the market price of food commodity. To achieve this objective, the study used a questionnaire survey method with 560 household heads as the unit of analysis spread across 28 villages in Banda Aceh. Furthermore, data were analyzed using a descriptive method to calculate livelihood assets and vulnerability index, along with multiple linear regression to analyze the effect of livelihood capital on vulnerability. The results showed that the condition of human and financial capital was still weak compared to social and physical capital. Households also had a high level of vulnerability to fluctuation in food prices. Statistically, human, financial, and social capital had a significant effect on households vulnerability. This study showed the importance of fostering both human and financial capital at the households level to improvequality of life and economic resilience. There were also needs for initiatives to improve social networks as a means of adapting to unexpected events.
