The aim of this study was to combine the positive properties of thermoplastics (quick and easy thermal processing) and thermosets (good mechanical and thermal properties) in a single material to allow a more efficient production and use of fiber reinforced composites. This goal was achieved through the development of a new cross-linking mechanism by Diels-Alder reaction of polyacrylate systems. Based on extensive off-inition calculations for various model systems, the furfurylic-methacrylate (FuMA) and the meta-xylylene-bis-maleimide (MXBI) were chosen for the Diels-Alder reaction for this work. It was shown that the main thermal parameters correspond to the pre-defined requirements (s. Chapter 4.6). Based on the DSC curves and rheological studies, a glass transition temperature of about 100 ° C could be determined. Furthermore the reversibility of the reaction could be demonstrated with these methods. The inverse gel temperature, at which the material behaves as a thermoplastic melt, is depending on the selected functionality and lays between 130 °C and 185 °C (s. Chapter 4.5.2.1). By addition with impact-modifiers and the exact adjustment of the molecular weights and of the Diels-Alder functionalities in the polymer, the mechanical properties are raised at the level of commercially available PMMA injection molding compounds (4.3ff chapter.). The mechanical behavior has been adjusted, so that the maximum strength of the Material appears in the range of the fiber failure, to produce an optimal synergic effect in the fiber reinforced composite material. In comparison to commercial available composites with reversibly linked or thermoplastic matrix, the developed composites shows significantly better mechanical properties (s. Chapter 4.6). The efficiency of the thermally reversible cross-linking reaction under different conditions could be determined via density measurements and a comparison between theoretical and measured inverse gel point temperature (s. Chapter 4.5.1 / 4.5.2.1). It could be demonstrated, that the mechanical properties of the developed polymer are on the same level as irreversible crosslinked thermosets. In Comparison to thermoplastics, the loss of the E-Modul is smaller (s. Chapter 4.4). After the matrix development was completed with good properties, an efficient process for producing thermally reversible fiber reinforced plastics has been developed (Chapter 5.2.2 / 5.4). The Impregnation were done on a standard industry coating system with aqueous polymer dispersions. Because of the low viscosity of the dispersion, a very good impregnation quality could be obtained. The produced prepregs are already cross-linked and shows in contrast to e.g. Epoxy-amine prepregs a long storage stability at room temperature (s. Chapter 5.1). Because of the lower molecular weight, the developed material shows a significantly lower viscosity in the melt during the processing (s. Chapter 4.2.1.2). Especially with regard to the production of fiber reinforced composites from prepregs, the lower viscosity (see chapter. 5.2.1.4 / 5.2.2) leads to a better connection of the prepreg layers and thus to a higher component quality with better properties. In experiments on the double-diaphragm system of the IKV Aachen and by the production at an automotive supplier (Plastic Omnium) complex components could be prepared starting from the prepreg in cycle times of less than 60 seconds. The process is faster than for thermoset systems and is comparable to the cycle times in the production of thermoplastic composites. Furthermore a complete process step can be saved (s. Chapter 5.2.1.3 / 5.2.2). The combination of fiber-reinforced substrates with conventional injection moldings could be demonstrated as well. It was possible to identify optimized process parameters for each process step. The influence of temperature, time and pressure on the mechanical properties are characterized in detail (s. Chapter 5.3). Because of the successful combination of the relevant properties of thermoplastics and thermosets, and the associated increase in efficiency of the manufacturing process in the laboratory and industrial scale, such a material will be commercialized by Evonik Industries AG

Studies on NIR sensitized radical photopolymerization in multifunctional monomers

This thesis describes Near Infrared (NIR) initiated photopolymerization of multifunctional acrylic esters with NIR-LEDs emitting between 750 – 870 nm. These systems comprise a zwitterionic cyanine as sensitizer and an iodonium salt with distinct substitution pattern in both the cation and anion. An optically open window from the UV into the visible part allows embedding of functional materials covering particular this spectral range. Reactivity was studied with a synchronized photo-DSC comprising a self-designed hardware setup for data acquisition. 28 new iodonium salts ([A-I-B]+X-) were studied to show the influence of structural pattern on reactivity. [A-I-B]+X- possesses a different substitution pattern for the cation and the anion, respectively. Electron transfer of the excited state of the polymethine to the iodonium cation bearing different anions such as benzilate, lactate, NO3-, PF6-, SbF6-, p-CH2=CH-Ph-SO3-, p-C12H15-Ph-SO3-, CF3SO3-, C4F9SO3-, B(CN)4-, B(Ph)4-, B(PhF5)4-, N(CN)2- or (SO2-CF3)2N- results in initiating radicals. Although most of these anions do not participate in the redox mechanism, there exists a certain dependence between reactivity and the nature of the anion. Anions with low coordination behavior ((SO2-CF3)2N-, B(Ph)4-,B(PhF5)4-, B(CN)4-) result in acceptable reactivity. This may be explained by the conductivity of the salt in the acrylate monomers such as hexane-1,6-diol diacrylate, tripropylene glycol diacrylate, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and trimethylolpropane triacrylate being different. A high ion mobility leads connects always to a high conductivity. Thus, complete dissociation is necessary to obtain a reactive system. The solubility of the different iodonium salts covers several g/L up to well mixable systems (>2000 g/L). A good solubility is not mandatory to obtain a high reactivity but it is desirable from a practical point of view. Particular the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion (N(SO2-CF3)2-) results in giant solubilities depending on the iodonium cation. Such photoinitiating systems are interesting because they bleach at the excitation wavelength and open therefore the opportunity to cure coatings with large thickness; that is a length up to several millimeters (14 mm). In addition, NIR-exposure additionally results in formation of light-stable brownish photoproducts. This represents an interesting alternative compared to brownish pigments used in dental materials. These findings require to understand the mechanism of sensitizer decomposition in more detail applying exposure kinetics and a coupling of Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) with mass spectrometry (MS) to analyze the photoproducts formed. Data show unexpected cleavage of the polymethine chain at typical positions in case of the oxidized species. These were formed as a result of electron transfer between the excited state of the photosensitizer and the iodonium salt. UPLC-MS experiments additionally indicated a certain sensitivity of the system upon adding of acids and radicals generated by thermal decomposition of AIBN. Thus, treatment of the photoinitiator composition (sensitizer and iodonium salt) with either radical or proton forming agents led almost to the same products no matter the system was either exposed with NIR light or not. Futhermore, photo-initiated crosslinking of multifunctional acrylic esters in polymeric binders was investigated based on digital imaging using the Computer-to-Plate (CtP) technology applying laser exposure in the NIR at 830 nm. Iodonium salts derived from several borates and those with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion resulted in lithographic materials with high sensitivity being comparable with those used in industrial systems. Finally, iodonium salts comprising the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion exhibit a lower cytotoxicity compared to those with the tetraphenyl borate anion as determined by the MTT-test using CHO-9-cells

Development of a spline-curve based symbolic model of the human spine for non-invasive motion analysis

Today, non-invasive motion analysis, or instrumented gait analysis, is one of the most relevant applications of biomechanical modelling within the life sciences. It serves the clinician in the assessment of pathology of locomotor function, evaluation of therapy measures in rehabilitation, or choice of suitable therapy measures for specific diagnoses. The de-facto standard in non-invasive motion analysis in clinical practice is reconstruction of the position and orientation of human bones and ligaments from stereophotogrammetric measurements of retroflective skin markers. However, soft tissue artefacts introduce up to 30% errors in reconstruction of position and orientation of the human spine from marker measurements. This work proposes a novel symbolic model of the human spine as a deformable space curve that compensates soft tissue artefacts by sliding degrees of freedom of the skin markers. To this end, a quintic deformable spline space curve is derived from the posterior vertebral line (PVL), the so-called interpolating PVL (i-PVL). The spline curve is equipped with an adapted Darboux-frame, such that the curvature invariants geodesic curvature, normal curvature and geodesic torsion defined by the Darboux-frame give rise to measures for spinal flexion/extension in the sagittal plane, lateral extension and torsion of the spine. Physiological deformation of the PVL is modelled as a generalized, linear elastic energy functional based on the curvatures that is extended to cost function by adding penalty terms for each skin marker placed on the spine. Non-invasive instrumented motion analysis of the spine is then defined as minimization of the cost function using sequential quadratic programming (SQP), while the skin markers are allowed to move freely along the curve to compensate soft tissue motion. The method was implemented using the C++ multibody modelling library Mobile and evaluated in two casuistic experiments. For lateral extension from neutral standing position, the estimated vertebal rotations and skin motions in supero-inferior direction are consistent with values found in the literature, while the model seems to overestimate trunk lateral extension. In evaluation of defined torsional motions of the trunk up to 50 degrees using five CT-measurements of the lumbar spine, the predicted i-PVL deviates from the lumbar curve by ca. 7 mm, which is found to be less than the estimated accuracy of ca. 10 mm of the measured data. As a conclusion, the method shall be rigorously tested for the lumbar spine, while modelling of the i-PVL shall be refined to be applicable to the thoracical and cervical regions of the spine

Regulation of Trefoil Factor Family (TFF) peptide gene expression in human retinoblastoma cell lines and relevance of TFF3 for cell behavior

Trefoil factor family (TFF) peptides, predominantly expressed in mucous epithelia and playing an important role in wound healing, are also expressed in the central nervous system as well as in numerous tumors and have been shown to effect apoptosis and cell proliferation. The regulation of TFF-expression in tumor cell lines established from retinoblastomas, the most common malignant intraocular tumors in early childhood, as well as the impact of TFF-peptides on retinoblastoma cells have not been investigated so far. Gene expression studies in eight human retinoblastoma cell lines derived from uni- and bilateral tumors demonstrated clear TFF1-expression, whereas TFF3-expression was low. By contrast, only weak TFF1-expression levels and high TFF3-expression was observed in the healthy human retina. Epigenetic modifications such as DNA-methylation or histone-deacetylation are in close relation with changes in gene expression. Promoter methylation studies performed in the present thesis clearly indicate a correlation between endogenous TFF-mRNA level in retinoblastoma cell lines and methylation status of the corresponding promoter region, whereby a higher degree of methylation is associated with low gene expression and low methylation increases gene expression. Epigenetic inhibition studies using the DNA-methyltransferase inhibitor 5-Aza-2`deoxycytidine and the histone-deacetylase inhibitor 4-Phenylbutyric acid revealed a direct effect of promoter methylation and histone-deacetylation on TFF-expression. The second part of the present thesis deals with the influence of TFF3 on Y-79 retinoblastoma cell growth, cell viability, apoptosis and proliferation levels. Functional studies demonstrated reduced cell growth and a clear reduction in cell viability due to a significant pro-apoptotic effect after application of human recombinant TFF3 as well as after transient and stable, lentiviral TFF3-overexpression. Taken together, the present thesis provides insights in epigenetic regulatory mechanisms of TFF-expression and reveals an important role of TFF3 in retinoblastoma cells behavior, providing new starting points for TFF-based retinoblastoma therapies

In the last decades the rapid development in the area of electronic devices was defined by the continuing development in silicon wafer based semiconductor technology. High costs of the vacuum based processes used to fabricate electronic devices on silicon wafers alternative process techniques are for great interest for developing cost effective circuits. A promising alternative are printable semiconductors, which can be produced in a cost effective role to role process. The forming of silicon thin films by the excimer laser annealing of dispersion processed silicon nanoparticles on non silicon substrates is one of the promising candidates for such a process. The process combines the advantages of classical silicon technology with a cost effective printable process. In order to determine a suitable substrate a COMSOL Multiphyiscs simulation is used. As a first step the temperature profile was described in COMSOL Multiphysics using the heat diffusion equation. For this purpose system specific material parameters are determined such as the silicon nanoparticle melting point at 1683 K, the surface reflectivity at 248 nm of 20% and the nanoparticle thermal conductivity between 0.3 and 1.2 W/m∙K. To validate the model, the excimer laser process was first simulated on a silicon substrate. The comparison to experimental data obtained by Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical capacitance-voltage measurements (ECV). The experimental data are in good agreement with the theoretical findings and supports the validity of the model. In the following the model was extended to describe the laser process on a silicon nitride covered class substrate which is commonly used during laser annealing of silicon thin films. The simulations on these substrates were experimentally validated. During the evaluation experiments it became clear that In contrast to their film forming properties on oxide free silicon substrates, the nanoparticle thin film tends to dewet and form a porous µ-structure on the silicon nitrite covered glass. The size and the distribution of the µ-structure in dependence of the laser energy density were quantified using a SEM study in conjunction with the image processing software ImageJ. To get a deeper understanding of the film forming process, a COMSOL Multiphysics ® fluid dynamics model, which solves the Navier Stokes equation for incompressible Newtonian fluids, was developed. To account for the porous nanoparticle thin film structure in the simulation, an effective medium approach is used by applying a conservative level set one phase method to the mesh. This effort allows predicting the Silicon melt film formation ranging from a porous Silicon µ-structure to a compact 100% density Silicon thin film in dependence of the substrate / thin film interaction as well as the laser energy used for the nanoparticle processing. The simulation shows the possibility of forming a closed and 100% dense layer by laser annealing of a porous silicon nanoparticle thin film. Thereto the non equilibrium contact angle needs to be reduced to 55° and simultaneously the silicon nanoparticle layers porosity needs to be reduced to 40% or lower. Following this process technologies and methods to reduce the non equilibrium contact angle and the nanoparticle layer porosity are discussed. This shows that the forming of silicon thin films by the excimer laser annealing of dispersion processed silicon nanoparticles on non silicon substrates is a promising candidate for printable electronics

Investigation of electrical contact resistances in graphene-based devices by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy

Graphene is a carbon atom-thick layer with outstanding mechanical and electrical properties. It has been envisioned as a promising candidate for its use as a conductive medium in polymers, a flexible, transparent and highly conductive electrode in optoelectronic devices and as the conductive channel of high frequency transistors. In the pathway to use graphene and its exceptional properties in such applications there are still open questions to be answered. One key issue always present for the fabrication of devices is that of the electrical contacting of the conductive channel. Such is the case for graphene where it is still not clarified how the oxygen content in Functionalized Graphene Sheets (FGS), the lithography process or the contact design in graphene produced by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) impact the contact resistance between the metal electrode and the graphene channel. This understanding is however of utmost importance since contact resistances significantly affect the conductivity of electronic devices. Hence, the aim of this work is the characterization of electrical contacts in graphene-based devices on ambient conditions. For a better understanding of the electrical contacts, information on the submicrometer scale is advantageous, therefore Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) was used as the main characterization technique. Since an improvement is expected in the resolution of KPFM by detecting the force gradient instead of the electrostatic force itself, phase modulation is implemented in the existing system and its performance is examined. A feature of less than 20 nm and 80 mV in surface potential variation could be clearly resolved in ambient conditions. In the following section, it is shown that with decreasing oxygen content in FGS, the transport mechanism of the charge carriers has a transition from predominantly hopping to predominantly diffusive transport, along with a reduction of the sheet resistance from > 400 kΩ/□ to 100 kΩµm) to linear, ohmic behavior with low contact resistance (~ 1 kΩµm). In the last part of this work, the influence of the fabrication process and contact design in the contact resistance of CVD graphene is investigated. It is determined that optical lithography systematically produced devices with contact resistances up to an order magnitude larger (>> 1 kΩµm) than e-beam lithography (< 1 kΩµm). It is determined that this is caused by a 3 - 4 nm thick residual layer from the optical lithography process which is present between graphene and the metal electrode. An elegant solution to prevent the effect of this residual layer in contact resistance is the use of novel one dimensional contacts instead of the conventional two dimensional contacts. In the former type of contact the charge carriers transit the metal/graphene interface not vertically but horizontally. It can be shown that such novel type of contact design, even with the use of optical lithography, can reach contact resistances lower than 200 Ωµm

The aim of this work was to develop a new class of supramolecular compounds which are characterized by orthogonal switching. The compounds should form polymeric networks that gel at high concentrations. For this purpose novel heterocomplementary monomers were synthesized, which are based on the method described by Schmuck et al. Developed guanidinium carbonylpyrrole carboxylate binding motif (zwitterionic binding site) and a metal-ligand binding site. 8-hydroxyquinolines, bipyridines and catechols were used as metal-ligand binding sites. These metal ligands are capable of forming 3 to 1 complexes with metal ions such as Fe (III), Ti (IV), Ga (III) and Yb (III)

    Corporate Social Responsibility Theories

Corporate Social Responsibility describes social und sustainable actions of companies and is far more than just a current trend in broad parts of the economy. Cleary defined ethical business guidelines and considerations of social and sustainable aspects are becoming more and more part of the general business target system. However, the particular field of research regarding Corporate Social Responsibility is not explicitly defined. Researchers, for instance, have not yet clearly identified to whom exactly companies are responsible and what responsible and sustainable actions are composed of in detail. Hence, there are several theories about how companies are supposed to handle Corporate Social Responsibility. This dissertation aims to evaluate Corporate Social Responsibility theories from the philosophy of science point of view. By means of certain criteria the most significant theory is supposed to be identified. Furthermore, it this dissertation examines which theory is applied in the German economy in particular, whether implicitly or explicitly. By comparing business practice and research, information is given about which theory is to be recommended and in which part communication and coordination problems may occur

Smartphones and tablet computers have evolved into universal communication and entertainment platforms. With the ubiquitous availability of mobile internet access, digital services and applications have become a commodity that permeates into all aspects of everyday life. The digital marketplaces for mobile app distribution, commonly referred to as App Stores, are blockbuster markets, where few extraordinarily successful apps generate the major share of the market's overall revenue in a short period of time. Through the implementation of dynamic, summative rating mechanisms in App Stores, app quality becomes a key value-driver of app monetarization, as app quality is directly associated with the number of app downloads, and hence with economic success. In contrast to desktop computers, mobile devices are uniquely characterized by a variety of sensors that measure environmental parameters and make them available as input to software. Potential uses of these technologies range from location-based digital services that use the user's location for vehicle or pedestrian navigation to augmented reality applications that use sensor information for user experience enhancement. Apps instrumenting physical and non-physical environmental parameters to control workflows or user interfaces are called context-aware applications. Context-awareness has a formative impact on the functional and technical design of mobile applications. The algorithmic interpretation of context data is a non-trivial problem that makes thorough implementation and careful testing mandatory to ensure adequate application quality. Major challenges of context-aware mobile application testing are test case creation and test execution. The impact of context-awareness on test case creation is the attainability of adequate test coverage, that in contrast to non-context-aware application extends beyond traditional input data. It requires the identification and characterization of context data sources and the provisioning of suitable, reproducible test data. This thesis addresses a method and technology to decouple test case creation and test execution from manual labor through the extensive use of model-driven automation technology. A method is presented that generates test cases for context-aware mobile applications from UML Activity Models by means of model transformation technology. A test execution framework facilitates the reproducible simulation of context data derived from an enriched system model. The approach is validated using a prototypical implementation of the test case generation algorithm. The simulation of context data during test execution ist validated using a modified implementation of the Android operation system

The long known credo of requirements engineering states that it is challenging to build the right system if you do not know what right is. There is strong evidence that this credo exactly defines and describes the necessity of requirements engineering. Fixing a defect when it is already fielded is reported to be up to eighty times more expensive than fixing the corresponding requirements defects early on. In general, conducting sufficient requirements engineering has shown to be a crucial success factor for software development projects. Throughout the progression from initial stakeholders' wishes regarding the system-to-be to a specification for the system-to-be requirements engineers have to undergo a complex decision process for forming the actual plan connecting stakeholder wishes and the final specification. Indeed, decision making is considered to be an inherent part of requirements engineering. In this thesis, we try to understand which activities and information are needed for selecting requirements, which the challenges are, how an ideal solution for selecting requirements would look like, and where the current state of the art is deficient regarding the ideal solution. Within this thesis we identify the information necessary for an informed requirements selection, present a process in which one collects all the necessary information, highlight the challenges to be addressed by this process and its activities, and a selection of methods to conduct the activities of the process. All the collected information is then used for an automated requirements selection using an optimization model which is also part of the contribution of this thesis. As we identified two major gaps in the state of the art considering the proposed process and its activities, we also present two novel methods for context elicitation and for legal compliance requirements elicitation to fill the gaps as part of the main contribution. Our solution for context elicitation enables a domain-specific context establishment based on patterns for different domains. The context patterns allow a structured elicitation and documentation of relevant stakeholders and technical entities for a system-to-be. Both, the documentation in means of graphical pattern instances and textual template instances as well as the method for collecting the necessary information are explicitly given in each context pattern. Additionally, we also provide the means which are necessary to derive new context patterns and extend our context patterns language which is part of this thesis. Our solution for legal compliance requirements elicitation is a pattern-based and guided method which lets one identify the relevant laws for a system-to-be, which is described in means of functional requirements, and which intertwines the functional requirements with the according legal requirements. This method relies on the collaboration of requirements engineers and legal experts, and bridges the gap between their distinct worlds. Our process is exemplified using a running example in the domain of service oriented architectures. Additionally, the results of applying (parts of) the process to real life cases from the smart grid domain and voting system domain are presented, as well as all other results from the scientific means we took to ground and validate the proposed solutions
