AGE DETERMINATION OF LIMESTONE ROCKS LEANG - LEANG CAVE COMPIL- ER THROUGH ACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS 14C USING LSC
Age Determination of Limestone of Leang - Leang Cave Through Activity Measurements of 14C Using LSC. This research has been carried out by using limestone samples taken from Leang- Leang Cave, Maros. Limestone is one of the environmental samples with a constituent of calcite mineral (CaCO3) which is derived from the remains of flora and fauna that has been weathered and petrified. Sample preparation was done physically and chemically. Preparation of chemically by using a mixture of NaOH with 30% H2O2 followed by a mixture of HClO4 with 30% H2O2, and the last with HCl solution to produce a clean sample with a weight reduction of 3,36% - 4,44%. Car- bonate matrix samples as CO2 is produced by reaction with 85% H3PO4 and absorbed by 1M KOH solution as K2CO3. The total carbon in the sample solution is 0,6144 - 0,9696 grams obtained through titration method. Radiocarbon dating method based on the measurement of the specific activity of the samples obtained from the results of counts LSC (Liquid Scintilation Counter) Hidex 300 SL. The specific activity of both of samples were 1,609±0,0359 DPM/g C and 7,718±0,109 DPM/g C. Age of both of limestone samples which were calculated from the specific activity were 25.607,403 ± 919,305 years and 8457,792 ± 921,899 years for BG I and BG II, re- spectively
Biomonitoring of Heavy Metal Plumbum (Pb) in Spermonde Island Makassar Using Starfish as Bio-Indicator (Protoreaster nodosus)
Biomonitoring is a method of monitoring water quality using biological indicators (bioindicator). This study aims to develop methods of biomonitoring and potential of the marine biota as bioindi- cator for marine pollution. To optimize the analysis, samples suspected to contain heavy metals Pb were taken at three points from three different locations, and a point at random from a single loca- tion in Makassar Spermonde Islands, using AAS asanalytical techniques. The results showed that Pb levels in starfish Protoreaster nodosus types ranged from 2,6080 to 2,8876 ppm, bigger than the distribution in the sediment ranged between 0,4862 to 0,5582 ppm and in sea water ranges between 0,6732 to 0,8724 ppm. The results obtained have exceeded the threshold of water quality standards
AGE DETERMINATION OF MARINE SEDIMENT IN SPERMONDE ARCHIPEL VIA ACTIVITY MEASUREMENT OF 14C BY LSC (LIQUID SCINTILLATION COUNTING)
A research on Age Determination of Sea Sediment of Spermonde Islands through Ac- tivity Measurements of 14C with LSC (Liquid Scintillation Counting) method has been performed. The sample of sediment was taken at the island of Lae-Lae, Spermonde Islands where it is rela- tively close to the influence of human activities. This study aims to determine the activity of 14C in the sediment sample and calculate the age through measurement of 14C specific activities of sedi- ment sample. Preparation is done both physically and chemically by using a mixture of solution of the acid and alkaline: NaOH, H2O2, HClO4, and HCl to produce sediment sample which was white and clean with a weight reduction of up to 5 %. Carbonate matrix sample was separated as CO2 using 1 N KOH absorber with H3PO4 85 %. Carbon content of the sample solution is 1.172 g/8 mL. The 14C activity of the sample was analyzed using LSC (Liquid Scintillation Counting) as an analysis technique. The specific activity sediment sample was 13.85g/C. The age of sediment sam- ple calculated from the specific activity was 821,0822 year

THE POTENTIAL OF Clathria reinwardtii as BIOACCUMULATOR OF HEAVY METAL Cu
Heavy metal Cu is an essential metal required by living organisms but a pollutant in water environment when existed in a level above the treshold level. The capability of sponge Clathria reinwardtii in accumulating heavy metals was analyzed according to modified Müller et al. (1998) method, and the sediment was analyzed according to Loring and Rantala in Rochyatun et al., (2006). Cu concentrations were measured by ICP-OES. The results indicate that Clathria reinwardtii was capable of accumulating the highest Cu level compared to other sponges. The highest Cu level analyzed in Clathria reinwardtii was 161.3 mg/kg

Distribution of Plumbum (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) Concentrations on Particle Size and Sediment Depth Variation in Paotere Port Makassar, Indonesia
Research about the distribution of Pb in water, sediment and Red Snapper Fish (Lutjanus erythropterus) in the waters around the port of Parepare has been done using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Sample water, sediment and red snapper fish (Lutjanus erythropterus) was taken in three location; Ujung Lero, the residential people and traditional market. The results showed that Pb levels in water ranged between 0.0380-0.8240 ppm, in sediments ranged between 38.9663-60.8982 mg/kg dry weight while the red snapper fish (Lutjanus erythropterus) ranged between 4.0580-8.4590 mg/kg dry weight. Heavy metal of Pb most widely distributed in the sediment and in the water at least. The results have exceeded the threshold of water quality standards
