    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to describe the symbolic interactions in the ritual ceremonies of medical treatment in Riau Province and the symbolic meanings of ritual ceremonies in the Malay community in Riau Province. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods. The medical rituals in Riau province studied include Kuantan, Bedikie, Menyemah, Pole, Cabut Kelo, Talam Muka Dua, Bokuan, and Buang Badi. These rituals are procedures for a medical ceremony carried out by a group of people in Riau Province, marked by the presence of several elements and components, namely the existence of time, the place of the ceremony, the ceremonial instruments, and the people who performed the ceremony. The study of symbolic interactionism in ritual ceremonies of the Malay community focuses on interactions that give rise to special meanings that create interpretation. The symbols used in the ceremonies result from mutual agreements. How things become a shared perspective and how an action gives special meanings can only be understood by those who perform the ceremonies. Mulyana’s symbolic interaction theory points out that self, social self, including control from other people’s perspectives, interpretations, and other meanings that appear in the interaction form three premises (1) humans act based on meanings; (2) meanings derive from interaction with others, (3) meaning develops and refines when interactions take place.

    Get PDF
Data shows that award-winning films are not always the best-selling films and vice versa. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate whether the director employs different art techniques for commercial and art films. This qualitative textual study examines the artistic treatments of both films and compares the narrative aspects of the story and the cinematic elements related to the film presentation techniques. The narrative aspects include (a) plot, (b) premise, (c) characters, and (d) conflict. The cinematic elements include (a) cinematography, (b) editing, (c) sound, and (d) setting. The results show that the director applies different art techniques for different films. For films orientated to commercial movie theaters, the narrative is more complex but presented in a cinematic that is easier for the audience to understand. For films in festivals, the narrative is more simple, but the cinematic aspect are more complex. These findings support the results of the data control, a combination of the best- selling and award-winning films, which shows that the film has a rather complex  narrative and visualizations but is relatively easy to understand.

Indonesian Dance Education in Taiwan: Methods and Experiences as a Teacher

Traditional dances are a type of performing arts passed down from previous generations. Some of these dances become the cultural heritage of a nation, and therefore, they require strategies and projects to preserve their traditional forms while promoting its contemporary articulations. This study examines the process of teaching Indonesian traditional dance to Taiwanese students and analyzes how this intangible cultural heritage is perceived by the students, not only as knowledge but also as cultural connectivity that links to the cultural and socio-political positioning of Taiwan.  The study aims at investigating (a) the methods and results of dance pedagogy of Indonesian traditional dances under new socio-cultural contexts in Taiwan, (b) the cross-cultural issues of education in dance, i.e., transnational aesthetic values and ethnological concerns experienced in directing dance training. It intends to reveal how to teach the dances both as knowledge and as cultural connectivity between the two nations, the pedagogical challenges in the process, and the best methodology to teach foreign dances. The study hypothesizes that dance teaching requires the mastery of the techniques, theories, and cultural knowledge, and those who study dances need to learn about the cultural background and values of the dances. In practice, sessions on theoretical knowledge and cultural values take up different portions of classroom instructions depending on the backgrounds of the students. Observations are conducted through teaching academically to students at National Taiwan University and practically to Taiwanese professional artists and dancers. Teaching these two groups poses different challenges and requires two different methods.

The presence of contemporary theatre performing arts in Indonesia can not be separated from the history of theatrical performing arts in areas in Indonesia. “Contemporary” refers to the situation in space and time today and is a way of pointing to the development and change of theatre in these areas. Today’s performing arts are undergoing significant changes in their form and content. It was inspired by the discovery of science and technology and the dynamics of the world’s cultural ideas in the 20th century. Hans Thies Lehmann’s post-dramatic ideas around the 1980s in Europe, among others, inspired the emergence of new creativity studies internationally. Performing arts transformed itself from an ‘art performance’ into an intercultural and interdisciplinary performance of art by dismantling and rebuilding elements of its performances. The research theme is the development of science within art, while the research topic is the utilization of art theory to create works of art. The study aims to examine theories and deconstruction methods based on post-dramatic ideas that improve the quality of intercultural and gender theatre creation. The specific research target is to discover the benefits of deconstruction theory for creating contemporary theatre. The theatrical performance chosen in this study was The Pilihan Pembayun, a drama script by Hirwan Kuardhani and directed by Yudiaryani and Wahid Nurcahyono. Research methods use qualitative description methods. Qualitative methods look for the meaning behind data with interpretive and thorough analysis techniques. Data collection techniques with participant elevation, interviews, observations, field records, and documents will be used in the research. The research results obtained are the theoretical foundation for eliminating the negative aspects of intercultural and gender communication in the performing arts.

Potensials Interior Design to Meet Cultural Needs Transformed by Covid-19 Pandemic by Interior Designer in Yogyakarta

    Get PDF
This research aims to explore the perceptions of interior designers in Yogyakarta about the potential interior designs that would meet the cultural needs of “new normality” following the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The study found that interior designers in Yogyakarta believed that 1) the changes in design would involve the spatial, human, and technical aspects. Since pace is a fixed variable and humans are independent variables, interior designers would cre- ate new spaces and utilize present-day technology to maximize the technical aspects of their design. They would also give more consideration to the element of health. The interior designers also believed that 2) all projects in the future would apply the principles of the next normal and take health into serious consideration. The prin- ciples of the next normal interior design, namely human-centered design, historicity culture tradition, and interdisciplinary sustainability technology would be relevant to the cultural context following the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the pattern of hu- man behavior during the Covid-19 pandemic may be temporary, so further research is needed to examine whether this habit becomes everyone’s culture and whether it needs more detailed study to prepare for the establishment of new design standards.

The Journey of Finding Paths in Javanese Court Dance by Sensory and Somatic Experiences of Taiwanese

    Get PDF
Is it possible to discover the spirit of another culture just by feeling without knowing? What happened when Taiwanese met the Javanese court dances with body and senses only? Can we compare Srimpi (one of the court dance forms of Java) and Tai Chi Chuan of China? How to learn and feel the dance culture? In the Javanese court dance workshop, my classmates and I were in our own “webs of senses” instead of “webs of meanings” to embody a little bit of Javanese court in Taiwan. To listen to gamelan music, to touch the sampur (a long strip of cloth used while dancing) and floor, to shape the body in the frame, to feel other dancers’ movements; all that confused us and made us get lost in the contexts of Java for a long time. Finding paths to learn the dances is a personal journey for one’s own and via which one may understand more about different cultures and more about oneself as well. I will share the experiences of some learners, including myself, to discuss the meanings of what we suffered and what we rebuilt.

Selling Spectacular Urban Life: Urban Space and Lifestyle in the Promotion Media of Apartment in Yogyakarta

    Get PDF
This article discusses how urban life is represented through the Barsa City, Uttara the Icon, and The Palace apartment advertisements and promotional videos. Applying Guy Debord's idea of spectacle to examine how urban life is transformed into visualization and commodification, also George Ritzer’s idea of re-enchantment of the disenchanted world and the new means of consumption. This article is aimed to analyze the position of apartments in the urban space of Yogyakarta that is discursively constructed through apartment promotional media. The conclusion of this research shows that apartments are functionalized to create the spectacle of the city. Urban space and life are aestheticized and spectacularized, in which apartments are displayed as part of dramatic and extravagant urban arts. Presented as one-stop-serving buildings, the apartments also promote the fusion of living space, urban style experience, and consumption which lead to the difficulty in distinguishing spatial boundaries. The advertisements and promotional videos of the apartment in Yogyakarta also promote temporal paradox. On the one hand, it promotes time compression and speed, meanwhile, on the other hand it promotes prolonged and extended time to foster consumption in the urban space

Sindhenan Banyumasan: An Example of Variation and Pluralism of the Javanese Female Singing Tradition

    Get PDF
Sindhenan Banyumasan, meaning the female traditional Javanese singing in the style of Banyumas, represents an interesting “regional variant” of sindhen vocal tradition. Flourished in the court of Surakarta in the 19th century, the sindhen practice has spread rapidly across the centuries, reaching many territories outside the court centers. Deeply connected with the ancient practices of the singer dancers, sindhen styles are still indicative of the local traditions and a testimony of differences and continuity with the formal teaching of central Javanese institutions. Despite the importance of the local variants, existing international studies on sindhenan have mainly focused on the styles of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, often neglecting rural areas, like Banyumas. The aim of this paper is to shed some light on sindhen practice in Banyumas territory; and to investigate its history, performance practice, repertoires, and vocal style. The research outcomes reveal how Banyumas singing tradition has many common traits with Yogyakarta and Surakarta vocal practices, though it maintains some specificities, index of the pluralism of Javanese music and performing arts

Redesign the Lampit to Reduce the Workload in Dusun Semaja, Tabanan, Bali

    Get PDF
Lampit is one of the traditional means of cultivating rice fields, which functions to level the land for planting rice. The operation of lampit can increase the work pulse up to 50% above the resting pulse and is included in the category of moderate to heavy workloads. At the end of the operation of lampit, it may cause complaints, especially on the buttocks and back, which is caused by the small and hardness of the lampit rod. There was an improvement to the lampit seating design by adding foam pads and adjusting the pressure lever found on the lampit stem to overcome this problem. This research is an experimental study using the same subject design, selected 30 research subjects from farmers in Dusun Semaja Antosari Tabanan Bali. The workload is evaluated based on the work pulse measured using the ten pulses method. In addition, the pulse was measured before and after the improvement of the lampit design. The data compared were the mean values before and after improvement, which were analyzed using paired t test (α = 0.05). The result is a significant decrease in the work rate of 19.35% (p <0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that the improved design of the lampit can reduce the workload. Therefore, farmers should continue using and perfecting the improved lampit
