Analysis of English for International Communication (EIC) Research Projects Conducted in the Independent Study (IS) Course Underpinning the Thailand 20-Year National Strategy Plan
The main focuses of this research study were to identify all research projects conducted by English for International Communication (EIC) students between 2017-2019 based on the Thailand 20-Year National Strategy Plan; summarize and analyzing; and, suggest the scope of the research projects in the IS course. A total of 109 research projects proceeded by the EIC students were analyzed. The research instruments were the Research Topic Analysis Checklist (RTAC). The statistic used in data analysis was the percentage. Overall, the findings indicated that the most of the research projects were in the strategy of development and strengthening human capital (85%), social cohesion and just society (5.45%), and national competitiveness enhancement (1.09%) respectively whereas there was at 8.21% ungrouped projects. Noticeably, an innovation technology and area base of IS projects gradually increased with the 21st century skills in 2019. Additionally, the understanding of both university mission and Thailand 20-Year National Strategy Plan related to the various research projects. This study can mutually provide a practical guideline for encouraging both teachers and students to explore more diverse interesting topic areas by bridging the gaps between the university mission, provincial policy and strategy, and Thailand 20-Year National Strategy Plan
An analysis of slang words in the Green Book, a movie directed by Peter Farrelly
This paper aims to describe types of slang words, meanings, and reasons for using slang words in the Green Book movie directed by Peter Farrelly. The characters in the Green Book movie use slang words in their daily or informal contexts. The researchers used qualitative methods in this research process. The technique used in the data collection part was by using the observational method where the researchers observed the data collection in the form of scripts in the Green Book movie. Based on the data collection, there are 118 slang words found in this movie. The researchers concluded that there are three findings. The first finding is type of slang word where there are 4 types of slang words used by characters in the Green Book movie, such as fresh and creative, imitative, flippant, and clipping. Then, the second finding is the meaning of each slang word used by the characters in the Green Book movie. While, the third finding is the reason for using slang words where there are 7 reasons for using slang words, such as to address, to form intimate atmosphere, to initiate relax conversation, to express impression, to show intimacy, to reveal anger, and to express humiliation. This research is expected to broaden our knowledge about the slang words used in America and to widen our understanding about the application or use of slang words slang for daily life for speakers who are interested in using and learning slang words
An Analysis of Students Speaking Anxiety in Virtual Learning Classroom During the COVID-19
This study aimed to find (1) the level of students speaking anxiety; and (2) factors causing the anxiety among students during virtual learning. This research used descriptive qualitative method, with the aim of analyzing data taken from 30 students of second semester students of English Education Department at Syiah Kuala University in academic year of 2021/2022. In conducting this study, the researcher used PSCAS (Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale) questionnaire by Yaikhong and Usaha (2012). The results revealed that most of students (67%) were in medium level which experienced by 20 out of 30 students. Meanwhile, the factors that most influenced student anxiety is lack of preparation factors (73%). Then, the next factors are grammatical error, motivation, friend/classmate, embarrassment, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, shyness and limited vocabulary. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that speaking in the virtual classroom can make students feel anxious and pressured. Anxiety can negatively affect students' speaking achievement; therefore, it is important for lecturers to be concerned with students' anxiety and find the best learning methods to reduce their anxiety, also by making the class atmosphere more comfortable and not monotonous
Discourse Analysis of Pakistani Media Coverage During Aurat March 2022: A Feminist Approach
The purpose of this study is to investigate and examine the image and representation of women in the Pakistani media, focusing on prejudice, portrayal, and their roles within society. Despite the emergence of modern feminism and social progress, Pakistani women continue to face oppression. Recognizing the influential power of the media, this research aims to examine its potential to bring about social change when approached with sincerity, as it possesses the ability to shape public opinions and attitudes. To accomplish this, a qualitative research approach has been adopted. The study involves the collection and analysis of data from specific talk shows aired on various news channels within the Pakistani media landscape. By focusing on these talk shows, the research seeks to explore the media's role in presenting and discussing key aspects of the Aurat March, a women's rights movement in Pakistan. The results show that the problem arises from the misunderstood discourse related to the movement. Oftentimes, it was related to culturally insensitive content about aurat march by media covering the other side of the slogan which further fueled the controversial religious rhetoric of the nation. This fenomenon implies that media platforms can either perpetuate or challenge prevailing prejudices and stereotypes
The Relationship between Parental Involvement and Students' English Learning Achievement of The Eight Grade Students in Palembang
The purpose of this study is to find out the extent of the relationship of parental involvement in the way to improve students English learning achievement. The proposed hypothesis is that there is a positive and significant relationship between parental involvement and learning achievement in English. This research belongs to the quantitative type of research, with a correlational analysis of product moments. The population of this study was all class VIII students with a total sample of 91 students. The results showed that the significance value was 0.00, because the significance was smaller than 0.05 (0.00 0.05), then Ho was rejected, and Ha was accepted. So, there is a relationship and high significance between parental involvement in student English learning achievement
Transforming education: A review of the benefits of integrating mindfulness and meditation techniques in schools
This review article explores the growing interest in incorporating mindfulness and meditation practices into school settings, examines their potential benefits and effectiveness for students' well-being and academic performance. The article provides an overview of various mindfulness and meditation techniques, their theoretical underpinnings, and psychological mechanisms. With the method of literature review, four phases of designing, conducting, analysing, and structuring as well as writing the outcomes of review were held systematically. The present study found that discussion about the advantages of these practices were visible for students, including improved cognitive functioning, reduced stress and anxiety, enhanced emotional well-being, and better social skills and relationships. The review also addresses the implementation of mindfulness and meditation in schools that focuses on curriculum integration, teacher training, and challenges to implementation. Lastly, it highlights future research directions and recommendations to further understand and optimize these practices for students of different age groups and cultural contexts
A review on the use of audiovisual as media in improving listening skills among junior high school students
This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of audiovisual as media to improve junior high school students in listening skill. Based on data and information that are all taken from previous studies, it revealed that the students average score in listening were still low. Therefore, in order to help students to improve their listening skill, audiovisual media is a media which gave good effect on students listening skill. This research using library research as the method that concerned on how the use of audiovisual media can improve students listening skill based on the previous studies and the theories of the experts. Thus, the data was collected from previous studies related to audiovisual media and paraphrased to get information about audiovisual media, this data analysis technique includes the processes of data identification from relevant literature sources, determining where the data is located, obtaining the data, evaluating the data, and incorporating the data into the research presentation. Based on the result of this research, it showed that audiovisual media had positive effect on students listening skill. Moreover, several studies revealed that the students gave positive attitudes towards the use of audiovisual media. In addition, audiovisual media also encouraged and motivated students during the process of teaching and learning
The effect of using computer-assisted reading with inquiry-based learning on student reading comprehension
This study aims to determine whether there is a difference between students who read using computer-assisted reading and those who read using other means in terms of reading. The sample was 23 students studying at two senior high schools in Sumenep, East Java, Indonesia. They were selected from student representatives based on their English language skills. The experiment was divided into six stages which include learning and testing. The researchers used lexical-tutor where there are audio-assisted reading, concordance, and online dictionary. For the learning process, researchers use inquiry-based learning, which focuses on student activity. To determine whether there is an effect on reading comprehension, the researcher used a paired sample t-test and an independent sample test to determine whether there is a difference in student reading comprehension score using an inquiry-based computer aid with those who do not use it. Based on the results of the study, there is no effect and no difference between reading using computer-assisted reading with inquiry-based learning and those who did not use computers. When viewed from individual scores, the results of the study showed little progress. The results of the observation show that not all students like to read while listening to audio
Analyzing higher order thinking skills (HOTS) questions of reading essay tasks in senior high school English textbook
English textbooks, particularly for senior high school students, should provide competent English reading activities to help students improve their English skills by simultaneously training them in reading and vocabulary knowledge. The researcher aims to investigate the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in essay reading exercises distributed in the English SMK/MAK textbook for grades X, XI, and XII. The researcher selected the English textbook published by Bumi Aksara. This study was carried out using the qualitative method.. The data analysis method was sequentially started from textbook observation, question selection, data reduction, and finally the HOTS data analysis. According to the results, there are 6 HOTS reading essay questions (C4: 2, C5: 4) in the English textbook for X grade, 7 HOTS reading essay questions (C4: 5, C5: 2) in the English textbook for XI grade, and 12 HOTS reading essay questions (C5: 12) in the English textbook for XII grade. It can be concluded from the findings that HOTS reading essay questions are distributed less than LOTS. These results may suggest to English teachers to be selective in utilizing English textbooks to improve student's critical thinking and for the further researcher to investigate HOTS effects on students achievement
