    AN INVESTIGATION OF INTERLINGUAL AND INTRALINGUAL INTERFERENCE FOUND IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) STUDENTS COMPOSITION OF RECOUNT TEXT

    Due to the complexity of writing skill, EFL students, especially in Aceh, face a lot of problems in composing a text such as a recount text resulting in abundant errors of both interlingual and intralingual interferences. Considering this, this study aims at identifying the types of interlingual and intralingual errors committed by the students in writing recount text. Based on the results found in the written samples collected from 60 students, it was found that from 16 sorts of error categories, the students committed 1143 occurrences of errors. The types of interlingual errors collected were in reference to orthographic errors, lexical errors, and grammatical errors, while the type of intralingual errors was overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application of rules, and false concepts hypothesis. All of these were caused by the lack of vocabulary and having no idea of the right words for their ideas, and hence, they just directly translated their story literally from bahasa to English. Therefore, both teachers and students should be aware of this condition. Moreover, the creativity of the teachers in enhancing students vocabulary and using it in context is truly required. Hence, these problems can be resolved in the best way

    DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF TEACHER TALKS DURING ENGLISH CLASSES AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL METHODIST BANDA ACEH

    This research aimed at analyzing a spoken discourse produced by an English teacher at Senior High School Methodist Banda Aceh. The discourse analysis was done to identify the production of ideational function, interpersonal function, and textual function in the teacher talks produced by a teacher. The research method used in this study was discourse analysis which focuses on the spoken discourse to interpret deeper meaning of the spoken sentences. The respondent of this study was one English teacher at Senior High School Methodist Banda Aceh. The data collection was carried out through classroom observation and interview. The data were later analyzed by using three steps analysis. Before the process of data analysis, the data were transcribed. The results show that concerning ideational function, the teacher used mostly material process such as writing, answering, speaking, etc. Concerning interpersonal function, he mostly used declarative mood which is a mood of statement. Finally, the textual theme that he mostly used was unmarked theme, which means he frequently emphasized the subject of the sentence mostly on his students, not on adjuncts. In conclusion, the teacher used these functions to keep his students active during the teaching and learning process

    MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS ON SHOP SIGNS IN BANDA ACEH

    This study is aimed at discovering the connotation and denotation that can be interpreted in shop signs found in Banda Aceh. Additionally, it also sought for the visuality, spatiality, and gestures that can be interpreted in shop sign found in Banda Aceh. This study used the qualitative approach in carrying out the research process which is the critical discourse analysis. The subject of this study was the shop signs that can be found in Banda Aceh while the object of this study is all the texts, pictures, and symbols in the signs. The data collection was done by taking pictures of the shop signs. The data analysis was carried out by using coding analysis and a three-step analysis. The results show that the denotation found in the shop signs are mostly the shop name, pictures, and philosophical symbols. Concerning to connotation, most meanings carried out in the shop signs are culturally interpreted. Moreover, concerning the visuality, the color used depends on the shop types whether it is black and white to highlight classiness and youthfulness, colorful colors for baby shops, and appetizing colors for the desert shop. In regards to the spatiality, most of the important information is placed on the left and the center part of the board sign. This is in order to ease information recognition. Last, the gestures are rarely used in the shop sign. It was only found in a coffee shop which is the steaming coffee cup, flying balloon in baby shops

    EXPLORING MARITIME CADETS ANXIETY IN ENGLISH SPEAKING

    This research was aimed at measuring the level of cadets anxiety in speaking English and finding out the dominant aspects of speaking anxiety faced by maritime cadets at Malahayati Merchant Marine College. To obtain this objective, the study was conducted at Malahayati Merchant Marine College. The participants of this study were 174 second-semester cadets at Malahayati Merchant Marine College and 15 English teachers. The data were obtained through questionnaires. Descriptive quantitative was used in describing the data. The data demonstrated that Maritime cadets level of speaking anxiety was moderate level, with average percentage of 58%. Furthermore, communication apprehension was dominant aspect in cadets speaking anxiety. Lastly, both the teachers and the students should be aware about English speaking anxiety because somehow it can be a barrier in learning English

    The Implementation of Debate Technique to Enhance the Students Speaking Skill

    The objective of this research was to improve the quality of teaching and learning speaking by using debate technique at the tenth grade students of SMAN Modal Bangsa, Aceh. The academic year was 2017/2018. The participants of this research were 27 students at class X/IPA-5. The research was classroom action research which was done in two cycles.Eachcycle consisted of two meetings. There were two types of data namely quantitative data and qualitative data. The result of the first cycle shows that the percentage score for the researchers performance was 70 % which is categorized as good; while in the second cycle the score was 90 % which is categorized as very good. Regarding to the students involvement, the percentage score in the first cycle was 75% or in the middle category, and it increased significantly in the second cycle with the percentage 95% or in the excellent category.Furthermore, the class passing percentage in the pretest was 55,55 %, but it increased 81,48 %in the first cycle and 100 % in the second cycle. It indicates that the success indicator is reached. Finally, the data from the questionnaire shows that the students responded positively to the use of debate technique in the process of teaching and learning speaking. The outcome of this research showed that using debate technique were able to improve the teachers performance in teaching speaking, and the students involvement in learning speaking.     Exploring The Way The Lecturer Develop Reading Material at State Islamic Institute of Lhokseumawe

    Reading material is one of the required subject stated in the curriculum at English Department of State Islamic Institute of Lhokseumawe which is designed by the lecturer for her own class. In order to create high quality material, the lecturer has to consider the procedure of reading material development according the theory that stated by expert. The research objective of this study were the types of reading text used by the lecturer in teaching, and to describe the process of reading materials development the lecturer did. The research subject was the lecturer who teach Reading Comprehension III at English Department of State Islamic Institute of Lhokseumawe. The data of this research were collected by using two research instruments, there were interview guide and documentation. In order to collect the data, the lecturer was given the questions of interview. Furthermore, in order to find out the type of reading text used by the lecturer, the researcher used the documentation. Finally, all the data were analyzed by using procedure of data analysis in qualitative methodology, there were three steps; first, organization and familiarization; second, coding and reducing process, and the last was interpreting and representing. From the data analysis result, it is found that first, the lecturer used one descriptive text for the first material and the rest belongs to expository text; and Second, the lecturer used five of seven steps of Tomlinson model in developing material process there were; First, identification stage to identify the needs of the students; Second, exploration of the need; Third, contextual realization stage; Fourth, pedagogical realization stage; Fifth, production of materials

    Experiencing English: A Textbook Evaluation on the Cultural Loads

    This research aimed at investigating the cultural contents implied in an English textbook. A qualitative method was used in this research which analyzed this English textbook. The data source of this research was the English textbook for junior high school students entitled Experiencing English. The instrument used for collecting data was documentation in the form of textbook. The data were analyzed by using Byram (1994) framework to investigate the aspects of culture. In this research, the nine aspects that have to be included in the EFL textbook were analyzed. The result showed that stereotypes and national identity was more frequently used in Experiencing English textbook. This aspect represents the target culture stereotypes and national identity commonly focused on the British and American cultures. In the other words, Experiencing English textbooks frequently used target language culture. Notwithstanding this fact, the source/local culture values as drafted in the 2013 curriculum was still implied in the textbook as intended to enable the students to reflect their own culture in English

    The Interpersonal Meaning of English Posts Written by Aceh Bloggers on Steemit

    This research was conducted to analyze the interpersonal meaning of English posts published by Acehnese bloggers on social media-based blog, Steemit through the systemic functional linguistic analysis by Halliday (1985). Steemit is a blog community which has a function as social media. There were twenty posts that were sorted to be analyzed in this research. In sorting the posts, the researchers classified the posts that used topics or tags Aceh, History, Writing, Tourism, Education, Writing, Nature, Life and Photography. In analyzing the posts, there are three issues that have been the focus of the research; exchange of interaction type, mood type and attitude appraisal that are realized in the posts. There were two kinds of exchange of interaction, the exchange of giving information or good and service and demanding information or good and service. From this research, giving information was the most dominant exchange of interaction and there was a small number of demanding information found. Meanwhile, none of the interactions in terms of giving or demanding goods and service as the interaction exchange were found. Another focus is mood element structures of the clauses in the posts. Giving information was the highest number found which revealed that declarative was the most dominant mood type realized in the posts. In the posts, however, it was found that there was a small number of appraisal value. Overall, the three appraisal values were all presented in the whole posts. They were judgement, affect and appreciation. However, the three values also showed very small number

    Analysis of Reading Comprehension Questions by Using Revised Blooms Taxonomy on Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS)

    The objective of this research was to investigate the three up levels of cognitive domain of revised Blooms Taxonomy used in the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK grade 11 th semester 1, namely analyzing level (C4), evaluating level (C5), and creating level (C6). Using the descriptive qualitative method and content analysis, this study examined the questions in the reading comprehension tasks only to determine to what extent the reading comprehension questions emphasize on Higher Order Thinking. This research focused on analyzing the Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK textbook grade 11 th semester 1 published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The researcher collected and listed the questions in the reading comprehension tasks and then calculated the percentage and frequencies of each level of cognition in each separate book chapter and in all five combined book chapters. The results showed that the most dominant level in the textbook was higher order thinking skills HOTS). It was 66.8 % of 100 % while it was 33.4 % for lower order thinking skills LOTS). It indicated that this textbook concentrated more on higher level thinking questions than lower lever thinking

    Lecturers Feedback in Speaking Class (A descriptive Study at Ar-Raniry State Islamic University)

    This qualitative study attempted to investigate the types of feedback used by the lecturers and the most frequent type used in speaking class at English Department of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University (UIN Ar-Raniry). The participants of this study were two lecturers who were teaching intermediate speaking at English department of UIN Ar-Raniry. Therefore, two classroom observations were recorded and transcribed. The observations were conducted four times of each class. The data analysis was done by using Miles and Hubermans (1984) model including data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The findings of this study revealed some significant results. There were five types of corrective feedback used by the lecturers in teaching speaking at English department of UIN Ar-Raniry. It includes recast, elicitation, clarification request, repetition, and translation. Further, the type of feedback most frequently used by the lecturers in teaching speaking was recast followed by translation, clarification request, elicitation and repetition
