    The use of Problem Based Learning to improve students speaking ability

    Speaking skill is one of the basic language skills that has important role for oral communication. This study attempts to find out whether the implementation of ProblemBased Learning (PBL) could enhance the students speaking skill at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding, Banda Aceh. The population of this study was the students from the second grade of students at Senior High School Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding, Banda Aceh. The sample of this study was the students in class II-IPA I as experimental group and class II-IPA II as control group. Through the quantitative method, the writer analysed the data by means of t-test.The result shows that there was a significant difference in the students speaking skill taught by implementing Problem Based Learning.The students mean of pre-tests score was 51.64. Then in post-test, the mean score of the students was 63.64.In other words, Problem Based Learning has successfully enhanced speaking skill of the II-IPA I students. Therefore, Problem Based Learningmay be one of the appropriate teaching methods to improve students English-speaking abilityas it gives a chance for students to relate themselves with real-life issues that require real-life solutions

    The English teacher's attitude towards internet personal access device (iPad) in teaching and learning process

    Regardless of the integration of technology into English learning at school brings an abundance of advantages, there are still very few teachers who have been implementing technology. iPad as a learning medium in English language learning has been widely applied in many countries. However, the use of iPad for English language learning in Banda Aceh is still considered uncommon. Descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach was carried to find out an English teachers attitude towards the integration of iPad in English teaching-learning class in Al-Azhar Cairo Islamic Junior High School in Banda Aceh. An observation sheet and guided interview were used to gather the data. The data analysis was processed in the form of condensation data, display data, and conclusion data which are proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings show that the English teacher delivered 91 utterances consisted of 34 affective attitudes, 28 conative attitudes, 16 evaluative attitudes, and 13 cognitive attitudes. The highest frequency attitude showed by the teacher is the affective attitude meanwhile the lowest is the cognitive attitude

    This study aims to explore the language style of Ernest Hemingways short story The Old Man. This research describes the stylistic used in the short story. Ernest Hemingway is one of the famous writers of prose and short story. Many people recognize his special works for short stories because Ernest Hemingway has a characteristic that makes him one of the best short story writers in Europe from a young age.My Old Manis the first work known for the lot use of stylistic styles that distinguish this story from Hemingways other works. The researcher limits the stylistic only to explore linguistics such as pragmatics and semantics. In addition, the researcher explains the features of stylistic devices which are on simile, poetry, and calque. This study combines 2 methods of analysis, namely textual and stylistic analysis. The results illustrated howHemingway used stylistic to describe a child as the narrator, where he told in detail the dark experiences of his father in the world of horse racing in a coherent manner.Hemingway combined his imagination with processing language styles in the story

    Using code-switching as the teaching strategy in classroom for low English proficiency learners

    This qualitative study is aimed to find the function of teachers code-switching (CS) to support low proficiency learners in learning English and to determine the benefits of CS practiced by the teachers in the EFL learning. The data of this study were obtained from two English teachers at Junior Islamic Boarding School of Darul Ihsan, Aceh Besar. The observation sheet and questionnaire were used to collect the data. Two English classes were observed in two sessions respectively. All of the conversation in the classroom was recorded and the code-switching parts were then transcribed and analyzed. The results showed that the teachers used CS for clarification, explaining difficult grammatical terms, building connections between teacher and students, quoting specific terms that is not available in English, adding specification, repeating message which previously said in English, explaining message qualification, and emphasizing a particular issue. The results of the questionnaires showed several benefits of implementing CS for students, such as enjoying communication during learning activities, feeling satisfied and comfortable in the learning situation, feeling less tense and rigid, focusing more on the lesson, improving their ability to understand new words, and helping them understand difficult concepts and grammar in English

    Pesantren readiness for the English programs

    Indonesia does not guarantee legitimately English as a second language. However, numerous Indonesian schools officially teach English, including pesantren (Mawardi, Maulidiansyah, Kamal, Nasai, 2019). Historically, the pesantren is an Islamic educational institution that teaches students through classical Islamic books (Fadhilah, 2011). Now, pesantren has been teaching modern lessons, including foreign languages such as English (Tahir, 2015). This study was designed to investigate the pesantren's readiness for English programs. Data collection was done by interview, observation, and documentation. Participants are people who are closely related to the object of research. A total of two English language coordinators were interviewed to obtain data on the pesantren's readiness for the English programs. The researchers also did observation and documentation to obtain supporting data from the research objects. The findings reveal that the pesantren's readiness for English language programs is outstanding in terms of the kinds of English programs, teachers' contributions, supporting facilities, and the pesantren environment itself. These findings are in line with previous researchers' findings, such as Insan (2019), Yulistiya (2020), and Setiawati (2018), stating that there are excellent programs for the advancement of students a foreign language

    Error analysis of the students English written descriptive text

    Making errors is a natural process of learning. Writing as a productive skill is important for students to express their ideas. However, students conducted errors in the productive skills. Therefore, this study is intended to find out types of errors made by students in written English. This study employed the qualitative method where the Error Analysis was implemented. The subject of this study is students in first grade of SMAN 1 Abdya and the object of this study were the errors found in written English. The population of this research was all of students in first grade which consists of 208 students from all study programs where 25 % of the populations were taken as the sample. To collect the data, written tests were conducted. The written test shows the percentage of writing errors, including omission errors, which is 58.38%, misformation errors with a total of 16.48%, misordering error 13.89%, and addition of 11.26%. The errors were found when students omitted 'to be' as main verb. Second, students tend to add 'to' after modal auxiliaries such as 'can' or 'will'. Third, misformation errors happened when students could not form the verb correctly. Last, the misordering errors were produced when students put words randomly. Consequently, it was discovered that the errors made by students were impacted by their native language, and this is the interlanguage move

    Exploring the proper cultural content in Indonesian EFL textbooks viewed from intercultural perspectives

    This research aimed to find out and to describe the cultural content of two Indonesian Senior High School EFL textbooks namelyBuku Bahasa Inggris Kelas XIIand Pathway to English 3 from the content of cultural information, the elements of surface and deep culture of Halls (1976) Iceberg theory and the dimension of intercultural communicative competence of Byrams (1997). This study is a document analysis, and the writer used descriptive qualitative analysis. The data were collected by reviewing document and were analyzed based on the concept of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) which covered data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion. The findings showed that the cultural information in both textbooks mostly presented by elements of surface culture. This research also showed that both textbooks had facilitated the three dimensions of intercultural communicative competence (knowledge, skill, and attitude), while the last dimension (critical cultural awareness) had not been achieved yet. In conclusion, the textbooks are still providing and facilitating the material in improving learners' language competency and cultural knowledge

    The use of comic book as a media in teaching reading comprehension to improve students' vocabulary mastery

    Improving vocabulary mastery of students requires creativity in finding some strategies in order that students are motivated to memorize the vocabulary. This research aimed to use a comic book to improve student's vocabulary mastery through reading comprehension. The researcher focused on the use of Snow White comic book in improving students vocabulary mastery. The data were collected by doing tests. The tests were divided into pre-test and post-test to see the students ability on their vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment, and a questionnaire was used to see the students responses toward the approach. The samples are the students of MAN 2 Montasik Aceh Besar, consisted of 40 students who were divided into experimental class and control class. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS Version 22. The result of the hypothesis testing of this research showed that students vocabulary mastery was significantly improved. The students responses toward the use of comic book to improve their vocabulary mastery were positive and the students showed their interest in reading. Therefore, the use of comic book to improve student's vocabulary mastery through reading comprehension is suggested to be used by teachers to help students in learning and memorizing vocabulary

    Using a smartphone video camera to reduce anxiety in speaking activity

    The common problems faced by students in English speaking are anxiety and the lack of confidence and ideas. This research was conducted to determine the relevant factors and to provide a solution by using the smartphone video camera. To obtain the data in this research, experimental research was performed inside and outside the classroom with a series of treatments and a questionnaire sheet as the instrument. The data were analyzed using a model proposed by Smeda, Dakich, and Sharda (2014) and a Likert scale questionnaire, which was adapted from Spratt, Humphreys, and Chan (2002). The result from the test showed a significant difference between the experimental and control classes as the carried t-test presented the score of -8.36, which was out of the limit (between -1.96 and 1.96). Another result was the students developed positively which was shown by: the anxiety tends to decrease as they were given time before performing thus prepared better, their self-confidence was increased and challenged by using the smartphone video camera method due to the application of innovation in the speaking class. The conclusion of this research is lecturer needs to apply new methods, one of which is using a smartphone application
