Review of DC microgrid design, optimization, and control for the resilient and efficient renewable energy integration

    No full text
Due to the dominance of renewable energy sources and DC loads, modern power distribution systems are undergoing a transformative shift toward DC microgrids. Therefore, this article is structured to present information on the design, optimization, control, and management of DC microgrids, demonstrating that DC systems have superseded AC systems across power production, transmission, and distribution. The core cause of this superiority is the DC microgrid’s scalability, flexibility, and ease of control. This review is focused on the structural analysis, intelligent and management schemes, market employability, and reliability analysis of a DC microgrid. After this work, some methods are presented that ensure the engineered DC microgrid remains robust to various environmental and operational conditions throughout its service life. The article is enriched with methodological flowcharts and block diagrams, from which design insights can be gained to design a reliable, resilient, robust DC microgrid. The article ends with an indication of how the future energy landscape will look, with the realization of modern technologies through DC microgrids

Most crops grown in tropical savanna ecosystems have a 30%–60% yield gap, primarily due to poor soil fertility, low nutrient bioavailability, and limited effectiveness of conventional fertilization practices. This study used an integrated soil management approach involving Bradyrhizobium japonicum\textit {Bradyrhizobium japonicum} inoculant and rice husk biochar combined with compost or phosphorus fertilizer for soil fertility improvement, soybean (Glycine max L.\textit {Glycine max L.}) growth, and grain production. In the Guinea savannah zones of Ghana, we conducted a two-factorial pot experiment under greenhouse conditions. The treatments were as follows: (i) 1% w/w (20 t ha1^{−1}) rice husk biochar (B); (ii) 0.5% w/w (10 t ha1^{−1}) compost (CM); (iii) co-application of 0.5% w/w (10 t ha1^{−1}) biochar with compost (B + CM); (iv) rock phosphate (B + RP); and (v) triple superphosphate (B + TSP) at 0.5% w/w (10 t ha1^{−1}), 0.003% w/w (0.06 t ha1^{−1}), and 0.003% w/w (0.06 t ha1^{−1}), respectively. Non-inoculated and B. japonicum\textit {B. japonicum} inoculated soybeans were grown for 91 days. Soybean yield indicators and soil chemical fertility were measured. A significant increase in pH, cation exchange capacity, and P availability was observed in combined biochar treatment with compost or P sources, resulting in increased grain production. Compared to the non-inoculated plant, B. japonicum\textit {B. japonicum} increased nodule numbers of plants grown in soils treated with B (+26), B + CM (+53), B + RP (+39), and B + TSP (+40). The combined biochar and compost amendment was superior, producing 93 nodules per plant compared with 51 in the control. Combined biochar and compost treatments most effectively minimized soil-limiting factors for soybean nodulation and grain production in weathered tropical acidic soils

Molybdenum carbides have emerged as promising catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). While numerous studies have investigated synthesis methods, structural properties, and their application, the understanding of their local electrochemical behavior and the correlation between particle size and activity remains elusive. This study addresses this gap by carrying out a comprehensive investigation of the HER activity of well-defined morphologies and sizes of α\alpha-Mo2_2C nanoplates, grown via chemical vapor deposition. Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) is employed for high-resolution HER mapping on flakes with dimensions ranging from 1 μ\mum to 40 μ\mum in lateral size, using SECCM capillaries with \approx130 nm tip diameter. Our findings reveal a significant variability in the HER activity at the subparticle level, suggesting that the heterogeneous activity observed in pristine flakes larger than 10 μ\mum is due to an addition of effects caused by the long-term growth, such as step-edge formation, Mo2_2C oxidation, and the presence of residual graphene. This study underscores the importance of local characterization of individual Mo2_2C nanoplates, shedding light on the impact of size-dependence on the HER activity

Acquired resistance, along with early adaptive mechanism after an initially successful treatment, represent a severe problem in anti-EGFR therapies in colorectal cancer (CRC). To design new therapies, a better understanding of resistance mechanisms is needed. Early adaptive and acquired resistance mechanisms become manifest on (phospho)proteome level and were studied utilizing mass spectrometry-based proteomics strategies. The first cellular adaption towards therapy was studied in the CRC cell line DiFi. Upregulation and signaling via ERBB3 and signaling via PKA and PKC were identified, as possible mechanisms bypassing the blockage of EGFR. Acquisition of longterm resistance was examined in a personalized patient derived xenograft mouse model. For the majority of resistant tumors, metabolic alterations were observed that indicated an attenuated Warburg effect and might indicate new vulnerabilities that could be therapeutically exploited

    Backdoors in cryptography

This work comprises two distinct parts: The first part provides a systematization of backdoors for cryptographic schemes that only the adversary can efficiently distinguish from the original one. For this, we generalize known backdoors by separating the process of embedding information from the usage of the embedding by the adversary. Furthermore, we present a previously undocumented backdoor for McEliece-like schemes. The second part focuses on the non-uniform reduction by Maurer and Wolf for elliptic curves, which relates the discrete logarithm problem (DLP) to the computation Diffie-Hellman problem (CDH), but requires knowledge of an auxiliary curve for every considered base curve. We were able to find auxiliary curves for 156 known elliptic curves with an assumed security level of up to 128 bit. For all these curves, our auxiliary curves allow for solving a single DLP instance by solving at most 5649 CDH instances

Die Thrombozytenfunktion als Biomarker in der Frühphase der Sepsis

    No full text
